How to open a boxed toy without creasing / damaging the end tab?

Have you tried using that little hook at the end of a nail clipper's file? I must confess that this has never crossed my mind.

That leaves more questions than answers.

I use a Stanley knife but have to be careful not to cut anything.

I insert the blade between the card flap which hangs from the top (or bottom) of the box and lever them (gently!) apart, but only just enough to prevent them catching as I open the box.

Thanks but I would be too worried I'd cause more damage to the box with my unsteady hands.

This. A metal rule, or a letter opener. Slide it in the side and use it to hold the tabs apart.
