Yes, this toy is very expensive - no doubt's there. Even with PC's good discount price and added with discounted code, I paid $198, which is still very expensive. If the rumour about MP36's 23000JPY RRP is true, then this will be the second most expensive MP to date (the dearest is still MP10 at 23100JPY (AU$288). Actually, even at discounted price it's already the second most expensive, so yeah, that's a definite. But at full RRP it's almost the same price as MP10 (MP10 beats it by just $1.25
).
But here's the thing... look at the level of design and engineering behind this toy. MP5 cost 10290JPY ($130), but we know that the design wasn't the greatest (for reasons which aren't the designers fault considering that he was literally rushed). Fans have complained about MP5 for years and wished that TakaraTOMY would make a whole new better one. They have now. And yeah, this improved engineering obviously costs more. 2.2 times more to be exact. But doesn't MP36 look twice as good as MP5? Would the difference between MP5 and MP36 be comparable with say the difference in design/engineering quality between a Deluxe and Voyager figure? Because a Voyager costs about twice the price of a Deluxe.
Now to put things in perspective, rather than paying 220% the cost of MP5, PC are instead allowing us to pay 52% more. Okay, a 52% price hike is still significant, let's not ignore that elephant in the room, but if TakaraTOMY's asking price is 220% greater, then it's actually a really good deal.
I hope my maths is right. I woke up in the middle of the night because I got a massive mozzie bite on my right thumb and was having trouble getting back to sleep. Good night, folks.
