Without any spoilers there are already considerable continuity discrepancies based on the trailer alone and other official release nitpick material.

So its either:

- Alternate timeline (strongest possibility given the franchise history and other rumors floating around)
- In practice a reboot but officially it isn't (like AHM)
- Total retcon

The rumour I heard (based on previews of the prequel comic) is that it's spoiler a new timeline created by people from the TNG/DS9/VOY era travelling back to a pre-TOS era and by their actions creating a new alternate timeline that the rest of the movie (and its sequels) takes place in. end spoiler

i saw an IDW prequel comic the other day in comic shop

it had someone on the cover, spock i assume, they had black hair, just a face
