For me it depends on the character and execution. For some characters it makes sense to have a clear version (e.g.: invisibility, being a ghost etc.). Then there's the execution. Ghost Starscreams look nice because they're coloured transparent, not just pure clear. The clear blue version of Classics Mirage doesn't rub well with me because clear blue =/= invisibility IMO. What irks me more is when they make clear variants of characters where it doesn't seem to make any sense for them to be clear, and other times when it would make sense, the variant isn't clear. e.g.: SCF Sixshot and Metroplex had clear variants, yet the variant for Lio Kaiser was pewter! Lio Kaiser can become invisible whereas Sixshot and Metroplex can't! (-_-)
At least with stuff like Ghost Starscream there's clearly (no pun intended) been thought put behind it instead of some random "wheel o' colour" variation.
