Default Transformers 2 - Revenge of the Fallen on PS3 First Impressions

    Ok well.. the beginning.

So far I've played through a tutorial mission and about 15min multiplayer.

Presentation overall is above average. The main menus and mission selection screens are functional enough with it's mock HUD look but I would have liked to see better. The intro CGI movie is pretty cool however and sets the scene but the menus could just be less.. bland with less faux stuff but the war-room is cool.

Into the game, I tested out the game world early as soon as I could jump. The bad news is the damage is on the poor side. Blown up and damaged stuff dissapears almost instantly before you can focus on it's charred remains. It passable when you are raging through it rather than focusing on it but for example, a destroyed billboard vanishes into a puff of smoke and some odd debris in under a second. This is no inFamous (interestingly it has a rail bridge that is very remiscent of the game). Overall, the daytime city is on the bland side but a decent arena for some destruction and mayhem.

Bumblebee, the first character introduced is pretty cool to move around and is animated well.

The fun starts however when you transform. The transformation of Bumblebee to the Camero is awesome and it has a cool control scheme that I think all of the Transformers share. Hold down R2 to transform into vehicle mode and back off the trigger to slow down the car. Releasing it will transform you back to robot mode.

So far, the game seems like fun. The environmental detail lacks polish but I'm starting to enjoy the rest of the game to start to care less about it.

Multiplayer was great fun. Swooping down on Bumbleebee in a jet, transforming mid air and then letting loose with the cannons is fun. The good news is that the vehicles control very well. The Camaro handled much better than I expected when it got going.

The Jet I piloted flew smoothly and is a fun choice. The collision detection against buildings in multiplayer was non existant from my experience which seems a bit too generous.

I did notice only 23 missions in single-player though, having completed 1 of them in the training mission so the campaign may not be that long but I have not played another mission yet.

Another half-hour passes... much clashing and gnawing of metal

Just played a couple of missions. Doesn't seem to follow the movie, no cut scenes are shown and the first missions are basically blow the shiz outta those robots.

There seems to be some variety coming up in the mission descriptions but after playing the first 2, I have not gained enough campaign points to unlock another yet..

Looks better at night. Graphics went up a notch in the missions.
Good fast, paced action. I'm liking the game the more I play it.

Just playing as transformers is awesome. Jumping around on rooftops, transforming mid air then hitting the pavement below is cool. Transforming into a Jet when outnumbered and hitting the skies is awesome.

For me, a self-confessed Transformers fan, the online combat and transforming action with the movie characters is the main event and so far this game is delivering. From what I can tell, the game engine seems geared to multiplayer.

btw in hindsight I realised the 23 missions is for the Autobot campaign, I assume the Decepticon campaign has its own set of missions.

If your a Transformer fan you are going to like if not love this game.

The games have their own unique story that has nothing much to do with the Movie at all. I dont think the DS or Wii games tie into the movie either.

Hearing good things about this game from TF fans, will be talking my friends who own PS3's into buying it!

Although i can't say anything about the Online Multiplayer Part

But i agree with Jetfires post ...

Favorite levels so far is fighting Devastator with (Whited out for people who may not of seen the movie yet)O.Primes Flying Mode that uses Jetfire as Parts and i like it in the china levels where if you shoot the signs on the building, electrical sparks appear afterwards ...

Maybe once enough people get a copy of the game we can organise an online battle together? (I'm not sure how easy it would be to organise as I don't have my PS3 online yet...Will soon as I have RotF on order and on it's way to me)

    Thanks

After spending around 4-5 hours with the game, I think it rocks.. Multiplayer is a blast add me if your on PSN JetfireAUS

I may have been harsh on the graphics, the explosions and character animations are great. The wall climbing is fluid, I mistakenly thought you had to shimmy up the wall, but you push L up to climb.

The single player missions loosely follow the plot of the film, and after completing 20% of a campaign involve search and destroy, repairing comm links, rescue and escort missions. While fun, the game engine does seems to revolve around robot to robot combat action that makes the multiplayer a winner. I'm looking forward to the Egypt zones and the Carrier missions though.
