I thought I read somewhere Jolt was there purely because the car company wanted to plug another car, and I'm sure Hasbro didn't mind either.

I suppose thats one way to look at it. It's understandable. I see it as sam basically died like in the G1 cartoons when Rodimus died and merged with the matrix. and in both instances they communicated with cybertronian ancestors to seek answers to a problem. Its not like transformers heaven! as some have suggested on other forums. The problem is with the scene they make it look like some sort of heaven.

Actually existing canon has portrayed the Matrix as being a cross between heaven and Nirvana in a paradoxical kind of way. It's like Nirvana in that all Sparks are destined to return to it (thus it is the place where "all are one") yet it's also like heaven because Sparks still retain their individual aspects even after returning to it.

The Matrix in the movie-universe is a different MacGuffin, so who knows how it works.

I can't remember, did the constructicons already have alt modes when they came to earth, or did they scan the ones on that ship? Also, was it the yellow excavator who was used for parts under the ocean? btw I loved mixmaster's hood ornament!

You never saw them come to earth, it was implied that they were already here before the movie started, least that's what I thought.
