Something like:
"You know how he transforms into a jet/tank thing, well in the old cartoon he used to be a gun and that's just the guns trigger, barrel and stuff.. Ok let's play musical satues."
Still didn't convince him.

I honestly would've said something like, "No, because Transformers don't sexually reproduce." Kids at school sometimes ask me about Transformers reproduction - and usually because they're actually genuinely curious, not because they're trying to be silly. Of course, I'm working with teenagers... I've never been asked by anyone younger, but I suppose if they did I would explain it in more age appropriate terms, like maybe, "Transformers don't have private parts."
Just as well you didn't show him a picture of Shackwave!
A year 10 student the other day was talking about those and said, "I want to sack-whack them." :/

he then spent the rest of the session running around and not listening to what we, as teachers, were asking him to do

Sporkwaves ravage missile could make him a Poo-pantsformer? The proto preview from the first film really looked like poos.
I think shock/shackwave (especially) are the kings if pantsformers. Then megatron and movie swindle is pretty kreepy too
