Is Hot Rod only the chosen one because he touched the Matrix first?

If Prime hadn't dropped it, and Ultra Magnus touched it first, would he have eventually become Ultra Prime, or whatever? Or, phrase another way, did Hot Rod only becomes Rodimus Prime because he touched it first?

Or was it more about destiny and even if Hot Rod hadn't touched it first, he still would have lit their darkest hour?

Just like in Harry Potter, there was a prophecy that could have related to two young boys... and one was choosen by events that passed to be the true "choosen one"

so here are all the TF's, and one event, the dropping, defines the chosen one...

I think the influence of the touch could have been both ways. Maybe in the couple of seconds the touch lasted, the power of the Matrix already affected Hot Rod's character and the future actions he was to take.

This would mean that not only is that little f***er responsibile for the death of Optimus, but for the death of Magnus too!

I would say its a bit of both. Because when he catches the matrix there is the whole flasing lights and epic music which make you think he is more important then he seems.
But i would say he was only the chosen one because he was able to light the darkest hour, so he just got lucky just imagine what would have happened if wheelie had opened the matrix and became the chosen one

says here even starscream had the matrix in the G2 comic when he tried to merge with Warworld, dunno how accurate that is though its wikipedia after all
