Hmm, the new price is not much more than a Xbox but I think I'm still going to go to the Xbox as my choice of next gen console, unless the PS3's backwards compatibility has been restored and improved (rather than progressively removed with each release). Maybe. Hmm. Ask me again in a few months. I can't decide!

No hope in the world of them restoring PS2 compatibility I reckon... all done to reduce price, hence the new version slimline PS3.

I suspect that they've probably moved the power unit to an external one and therefore also saved component costs on the need to have a cooling fan as well.

Smaller form factor and different disc loading mechanism are also new additions to cut production costs.

Up until now, you could have a 360 and a Wii for the same price as a PS3, so of course Sony had to do something about it.

I have both the 360 and the PS3, and I must say that the Xbox gets used for games more whereas the PS3 is an expensive living room ornament/back up Blu-ray player.

Get the PS3 if you want to get into hi-def Blu-ray movies but otherwise, the 360 is fine if you only want to play games.

There's ongoing discussion of the current games consoles which still hasn't helped me make up my mind. But yeah I doubt backwards compatibility would come back which is a shame, I've been playing my PSX games on my PS2 the last few nights and like that functionality.

You can only watch Blu-ray porn on a PS3.
If that doesn't sway your decision then nothing will.

It's still very expensive per disc (about $80-$90) but some would argue...well worth it.

I hope that will come down soon, seeing as normal Blu-ray movies are dropping in price and you can get some titles for $15.

Nah, it was because of the need for improved picture clarity since the average size of TV sets has drastically increased.... porn's an added bonus!

But then again, blue movies ----> blu ray? Hmm....
