Not quite true; on the whole, G1 toys were created before the cartoon. For example Microman (Micro Change)'s MC03 Microcassette Robo Red Condor and Orange Condor became Laserbeak and Buzzsaw respectively. Hence they both appeared in canon (cartoon and comics) being drawn with the same model but different colours. The same goes for the Seekers and Rumble and Frenzy, although we all know about how Sunbow swapped the colours for Rumble and Frenzy around creating the FIRRIB phenomenon (I'm not starting a debate about it, just stating facts!).

So if these repaints never existed as toys, they probably wouldn't have existed in the cartoon either.

You're right, a lot of early G1 toys were really retools and not straight repaints like we see nowadays.
    e.g.:
+ Prowl / Bluestreak: Prowl has a strobe rack, Bluestreak doesn't
+ Runabout / Runamuck: different vehicle modes; Runabout is a Lotus Turbo Esprit whereas Runamuck is a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.
+ Bumblebee / Cliffjumper: despite what Hasbro seems to think, they're NOT repaints of each other. Aside from different heads, Bumblebee is a VW Beetle whereas Cliffjumper is a Porsche 924 Turbo. Hubcap is also another retool - being a Porsche 924 Turbo like Cliffjumper, but has a different head and a reduced spoiler.
    ...etc.

I agree, which is why I skipped them all even when they were heavily discounted.

As an example, the new Alternity lines are well-known notorious for repaints. But because of the quality of these toys, some may not help to be contented that one colour is better than the other. Like say the red Optimus Prime looks awesome with silver Megatron coz it somehow commemorates their original hues. But some (like me ) would still get another pair of black or silver Prime worthy for display in alternate mode (like a scale model) or maybe a black Megatron which has a more kick ass-looking bot mode as compared to its blue or silver counterpart. And based on today's trend, the most recent released repaints tend to be more expensive that the previous versions.
    Latest Acquisitions: Metroplex
Incoming: ROTF Buster Optimus Prime; FP Defender, Insecticons
Needs List: Alternity Cliffjumper; TF Prime Bulkhead, Skyquake, Vehicons; Classics Sky Shadow, Junkheap

Well some repaints work, some dont. But it really depends on the individuals taste. Some don't like the original colors the mold comes in , but, when they repaint it to something else, it kinda makes it more appealing and so the "want" factor changes from "pass" to "buy". Some repaints are an obvious blatant excuse to rake in more moolah before the mold degrades - ROTF soundwave, but in most cases are fail, fail, fail.

I for one just go nowadays with modern released TFs if I like how it looks to me. Seekers, yes bring on the rainbow squad, Ill buy one of each. umpteenth time recolor of bumblebee , uhm nah. If the color works- for me, Ill buy it, heck I might even skip the original and go for the recolour version instead. Also price determines it as well... wait for a sale is always good.

I don't mind repaints because G1 was, after all, based on them (okay, retools I guess). This doesn't mean I will buy them all though. I only get the ones I like or are a real different character. Bumblebee with a new hat is not really enough.

What really bugs me about repaints now, though, is that they swap factions! I can understand Teletraan 1 scanning the same vehicle for a number of similar TFs within their own factions, and I know the new movies changed that a bit, but at least keep the same moulds on the same team!

I would only buy a repaint if I liked dat mold and missed it da first time and da colours used isnt too bad, I wouldnt pay a higher price for it though, just think it's not worth it. With repaints, I seem to think most of da time they hav less paint applications than the original, which puts me off even further

I passed up two opportunities in the past month to get 2007 Movie Fracture (Classics Mirage repaint) for $40 and I'm still regretting it now. . ... .

Love the mold! Can't really justify $40 though. $30 (like SE Dragstrip) I have done. Only a little bit dissapointed
