Default Robot Heroes G1 Bludgeon (work in progress)

    Attachment 1420

It struck me as kind of blindingly obvious (although I'm sure other people have thought of it) when I saw it on the shelf that Super Hero Squad Silver Samurai would make a good G1 Bludgeon custom. It has the samurai outfit and sword already. It can afford to look less robotic than the other Robot Heroes because it is after all a Pretender.

    My initial thoughts:

I am pondering trying to carve his face out and replace it with the head from either the Wolverine figure that came with it or tracking down a Super Hero Squad Ghost Rider figure and doing the same thing. Neither option fills me with much cheer. The SS's face is going to be a b**ch to carve out and getting the new face to be a good fit is going to be demanding. I will try carve out his face armor details and see how that looks first. Since it's meant to be a skull I reckon it can afford to be a bit rough. I will leave the smile in: Robot Heroes are a cheery bunch.

I'm unsure what to do with the rising sun detail on its chest. I am tempted to leave it as is and just paint details on, hoping it will overshadow the sun design. Another option is to turn his torso back to front and swap the arms, since the backs of figures are hardly ever on display. The way its arms are angled make putting sculpy on to smooth out the design virtually impossible. Wolverine's torso has an X badge on it (which could be dealt with easily) but also a belt. SS's belt is part of its legs, so if I used Wolverine's torso it would have two belts and carving/smoothing out the details of one of them would not be fun.

I'm also thinking of re-painting a Legends G1 Megatron as Bludgeon's inner robot... but there's no way in Hades I'm going to try fit it in there!

End result of first day's work:

    Attachment 1422

Torso twisted around and arms swapped. I carved a bit of the rising sun logo off his back even though it's pretty unnecessary (I can be a bit detail-obsessed).
I also carved off the cheekbones of his samurai helmet but have left the eye mask lines in. There's just no way I can get in there with the tools I have (an old cutting blade). However, I would rather have a dodgy face and a good samurai helmet rather than a good face (i.e a ghost rider head swap) than no helmet.
My working week starts tomorrow so it may be a while before the next update.

And thanks for the comments 5FDP and Azrael!

I'd love to but for the life of me I can't figure out how to do it easily and cleanly... and I also need to find a skull head.

I think I will give up on trying to give him an entire skull face and just paint his eye armor the same as his helment.
