I grew up around the time BW was on, but it wasn't a part of my childhood at all. Transformers only really came into my life around 2007.

So I picked protoform, because that's the most applicable thing.

Sky Shadow: yeah I meant "grew up" purely as a biological/legal definition. Mentally we're still in Year 5.

Interesting to see that the Beast Wars generation is currently the second most dominant behind G1. I think it comes as little surprise to anyone that most of us here grew up with G1. But Beast Wars is my second favourite TF era (although I was a uni student at the time, so I can't say I grew up with it ) - so I'm glad to see it coming second.

Born in 88, watched Gen 2 on cheez tv with Ryan and the other random guy. But most G1 toys were from my brothers who were born in 82-83!

Generation 1 for me (although it was late 80s/early 90s reruns and not the original screenings - the 'enhanced' G2 cartoon would not come until a bit later).

I'm an '87 child, so I was able to get into TFs through friends of mine whose brothers had quite a few Transformers, and I got a few of the G1 Classic releases (I think they were a Euro thing around 1990) plus a bit of Gen 1.5 and a bit of G2.

If going by pure number of toys, it would probably have to be G1.5 that is my Generation, so probably G1, but only just...

    G1.

I was there when TFs were released on 1984/5 (cos they came to Singapore later). My first experience with TFs (quoted from my blog) is:

"I remember vividly the first time I saw Megatron as a kid. It was evening. Mummy, my brother and I were at OG People’s Park walking through the toys section as usual. We walked by the Transformers section and there being screened on a little TV was an episode of the G1 cartoon episode I would know as Transport to Oblivion years later. It was playing the scene where Megatron and Soundwave (or was it Starscream?) were outside a cave of closed in Autobots; Megatron transformed, Soundwave (or Starscream) held him and blasted the cave roof down to trap the Autobots with finality."

Like many kids back then, I watched G1 and the other 80s 'toons like [insert 80s cartoon names, too many to name]. In 1990, I completely stopped having any contact with Transformers in favour of things like Marvel Comics, basketball, dancing (eek!), hockey, snooker, long distance cycling, roller blading, chalets, clubs, parties and girls (I was still pretty young then, but hey, man's gotta do what a man's gotta do ).

I effectively didn't see any TFs that came after the Star TV Victory series in 1989 and I guess that's what shapes my collecting habits today.

I tried to get back into the later year TFs with the TF: Armada cartoon. It sucked. I didn't try again, just don't have the time. So, I'm sticking to getting back what I know and love - G1.

Yeah, in 1990-91 we had lots of early G1 toys reissued as part of the Classic series. They were a great way to catch up on previously missed figures. The Earthforce Saga was written to market the Classic reissues - which only came out in Europe and Australasia, so events in the US series conflicted with it. Hence it's since been retconned as being an out-of-continuity event. But having said that, Earthforce references still appeared in the later US stories written by Furman (e.g.: during #75's battle against Unicron the Autobots aboard the Ark were members of Earthforce, taking orders from Earthforce Commander Grimlock! )
