And the egg form then doesnt evolve, so how the hell would one get a Manaphy?

Manaphy can breed with ditto and produce an egg which contains Phione (spelling may be a little off)
And yes, Phione doesn't evolved into Manaphy.
Only way to get Manaphy is through either give aways or getting the egg transferred from one of the Pokemon Ranger Games

I got mine from the mystery gift dealy that Jb or Target had last year.
It's yet another useless creature, but the majority of the newer (past 250 ) creatures are useless.
