Default Life is good .. then it crashes and burns

Some of you may know I work weekends at a local TV station. Been doing this for five years so it gets rather boring.
Some of you also may know that I work as IT Support during the week (main job)
Some of you also may know that i'm off to Singapore in three weeks.

Being the IT support person means I have a work laptop. I take this laptop to my weekend job so I can watch DVDs and download movies/tv shows etc to pass the time.
Been doing this since December. All is good.

Until tonight. As im walking down the stairs, I hear a thud. As I turn around to see the newspaper I was carrying in my bag lying on the ground I also hear another thud and turn around to see my work laptop sliding down the stairs coming to a rest at the door.

As I pick up the hard drive cover and the DVD drive cover - I know its not going to be good. Hard drive would have failed, LCD screen is probably gone. Damage is as expected, the latch closing the lid is busted and the screen is no longer fully connected to the shell of the laptop. There are also a few abrasions to the shell (dented and cracked corners)

Too scared at the moment to power it on to see whats working or not..

I guess i'll see what happens at work when I let my boss know what happened. In a good way im glad it happened now while I have some savings to pay for the new laptop..

Funny you mention those, as that is what we get
Thinkpad X61 Tablets. If I have to pay for my own though I would rather wait for the X200T

Ouch! Hopefully the laptop is covered by your work's insurance or a repair man can restore it..
Which brings us to where we are today...

I feel for you Zippo. It was about this time the year previous that something similar happened to me.

something similar happened to me.. a friend gave me his portable hard drive so i could get some tv shows and stuff off him... and somehow, the logic board on the hard drive got fried.. i dunno if it was a power surge or something or what :S.. i havent told him yet... hopefully there was nothing too important on there.. or he at least has back ups.. i went looking for the same hard drive so i could swap logic boards, but wouldn't you know, in the 3 months since he has bought it, they've changed the board... grrrrrr

    sorry to hear that, zippo...

hard drive is probably still functional if it is not in pieces... even if it is... it's retrievable unless the hard drive parts are not available.
