Default 2nd attempt at custom repaint

My second attempt at a custom repaint. I had a go at DotM Roadbuster because I thought the figure was incredibly plain but actually had a lot of detail that wasn't really highlighted with the excessive amount of grey plastic.

I thought I'd try a few different effects as it's my first real go at this. So I have attempted battle damage on panels that don't show in alt mode, also attempted tyre wear.

Let me know what you guys think, if you have any tips I would be grateful. My next project will be DotM Voyager Megs, another figure that has a lot of potential I think but again too much grey/brown plastic. Might also have a go at the rust effect with that one.

Holy crap that looks excellent AJ!

You've really brought out a hell of a lot more detail that that ugly grey plastic hides, I especially like the underside of his Alt mode, whilst probably cleaner than what most would be, it looks so much more realistic!
In Bot mode he looks alot more like what we saw on screen in terms of the metallic palette coming through and the damage adds just the right touches.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what you achieve with DOTM Voyager Megatron, if you're able to stick with his weathered and fatigued Metal and Rust colour scheme, I think you'll have a masterpiece on your hands!

Wow, nice work! The detail is amazing, you've done a brilliant job. I want to do this to my DOTM deluxe Optimus Prime because he's just far too grey and boring, but I've never done a custom repaint before so I don't know what I'm doing. Any tips or resources?

Nice work. To date I've only pulled off 1 custom repaint, all the rest were total fails. Si if this is your second attempt I tip my hat to you.
Really brought out the detail on him.

A much improved figure! Very good!. Though personally, if it was mine, I would of left the car in its white/green paint but painted all the robot bits like you did.

I'll second that notion, in fact, I plan to do that sometime in the future. But damn, AJ, that is a good job, improves the figure out of sight. Looking forward to Megs!

    Hi guys,

Thanks very much for the compliments. Before I did any painting I did a lot of research to find out how to achieve the best effects. If anyone is interested I have listed some of the sites I checked out.

    Research/Resources:

Great 2 part how-to vid of custom transformer repaints:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIXCqudY-1I

Excellent resource specifically for transformer repaints:
    http://www.angelfire.com/mech/jinsao...mersPaint.html

Description of various painting techniques for a variety of desired effects:
    http://themodelmakersresource.co.uk/...rticle003.html

    Another good resource:
    http://www.wikihow.com/Paint-Warhammer-Figures

These are just some pics that experienced/professional people have posted, I used these for ideas:

    http://www.fullmetalhero.com/content...on-Masterclass

    http://frenzyrumble.blogspot.com/

For the metal effects I used flat black as a base, then dry brushed over that with steel darkened with a little flat black. Then I dry brushed a thin layer of silver over that, focussing on the ridges.

I have just received the dual model kit BB, great looking figure and very posable but too much grey for my liking so I think I'll just paint over the grey parts to give them that worn metal look. Will definitely leave the panels alone.

Once I've done that Megs is next on the agenda. I'll post pics of the finished products. It's very slow going though, only get maybe 3 hours per week to work on these, kids take up a lot of time.

Thanks again for your support everyone, I'm always interested to see what other members have done also and to share ideas and tips. I really enjoy looking at the creativity that others have, there's definitely a lot of talent amongst the OTCA members.

No probs Jena, I hope they help. My first attempt was on my 4 yr old son's legends BB, after that (and all the research) I got a bit more confidence to attempt a deluxe figure.

I wish you the best of luck with your repaint and look forward to seeing pics of the finished result. I bet it will turn out awesome.
