The reason why Sparkplug Witwicky was never seen after G1 Season 2 was because on January 1 2001, while celebrating the dawn of the 21st Century and opening of Autobot City there was a massive party. Ultra Magnus, drunk on overenergising on Energon Cubes, accidentally sat on Sparkplug. He proceeded to wipe his arse clean and since sobering up has no recollection of what transpired.
Thus officially what happened to Sparkplug remains a mystery, and his face can still be seen on the side of milk cartons today.
