Default Thundercracker (Legends of Cybertron, 2006) rear panel hinge?

This little bot has an extra hinge on the back that allows the upper fuselage to open 90 degrees away from the body. Does anyone know why?
Is there a secret gestalt mode, maybe a base connector? Seems weird.
I suppose if it is opened it recreates the G1-style shoulders look, albeit with a cement mixer poking out his butt. Here's my Starscream version for reference.

Really just there to replicate the Planet Key gimmick of the full size toy. https://images.app.goo.gl/5PCHamJafEk9cuDa8
