Default Casting parts - can this be done?

    Hi Guys,

Has anyone here been able to cast parts?

I remember someone mentioning being able to make parts from Polystyrene which is the same plastic used for disposable cups and such. It is a plastic which is easy to melt and solidifies at room temperature into the shape of it's container.

I wish to be able to replicate a missile part which is otherwise impossible to acquire by itself. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Sadly not, it's always been something I wanted to try. Theres plenty of resources on the net about diy moulding of various plastics.
I wouldn't recommend polystyrene on it's own though, you may want to 'alloy' it with ABS plastic for extra strength.

    ABS plastic http://blog.makezine.com/archive/200...s_plastic.html

Unfortunately I have no idea how workable this goop is.

I think Kelvinchang99 has either cast parts or knows someone who does.

Just out of interest, what part are you trying to replicate?

MOTU 200X Castle Grayskull missile It seems impossible to find one loose anywhere.

Obviously it's not a Transformers part but since the process can be used for general toy repair, I thought I should make a thread here for general reference.

I have been researching and found this place:

I like how they make a mold out of that putty like substance (they have a video). It seems workable for what I am trying to do.

With the AUD so strong why don't you try out Aluminite or Smooth-on stuff. Casting stuff is something thing I've yet to try out but the starter kits look pretty good.
