In the end I went with the all over burnt umber base. I then mixed a mainly white with a drop of burnt umber for the layer on top. I did a half painting half dry brush method. I wiped a lot of the paint off but still had enough on the brush as well.

    In progress pic.

Here is the beigeish layer finished. Sorry for the blurry pic.

I then did a a real dry brush, with streaks of yellow ochre and burnt sienna.

I am not sure if I have done enough highlights but I didn't want to go nuts and ruin it straight away.

Here is what it looks like pretty much finished. I am open to suggestions on ways to improve it. I don't have an airbrush yet so any suggestions keep in mind it is all brushes here.

That looks awesome Btw, if you have a spare pair of G1 Ravage missiles, they can also attach to Henkei Ravage (mmm... universal 5mm port fresh...). I imagine that this display would also work w/ MPs. Would you be willing to do a quick mock-up display w/ MP Ravage and any MP Car? If (when?) they do an MP Hound, he ought to be the same scale as the MP Cars.

Although my hands aren't overly steady, here is the pic you suggested GoktimusPrime.

Don't think it scales well with the Masterpiece.

It looked a bit barren so now I am working on some rocks and desert grass.
