    Default Removing rust from Transformers

    Hey all,

So i recently purchased a large lot of misused and abused bots and I am trying to restore them. Among the large issues I am dealing with, rust seems to be the biggest. Rust stains I can remove from plastic but removing rust from metal parts and screws is proving a challenge.

Any advice on what to use and how to remove screws that are so rusted there are no ways to turn the screw?

I had good success with metal polish but that only works if the part is solid metal and unpainted.

wire brush is good for removing rust. though will have a detrimental effect on any surrounding plastic.

as for removing screws, try using a hardened steel (pin, sewing needle or mini screwdriver) to scratch out enough from the screw head to fit in the screwdriver.

in larger applications it helps to hammer on the end of the rusted screw to loosen it, don't know how well this would translate to toys. perhaps just push down hard while trying to unscrew.

WD-40 works great on loosening rusted material, but be mindful of where you apply it, especially on plastics. Their FAQ says don't put it on polycarbonate plastic, which is used for the transparent parts like windscreen, light pipes.

I'd suggest spraying or even saturating a cotton bud, then carefully rubbing it on the screw, with the aim of having some penetrate down into the thread. Maybe try it out on a piece that you're willing to write off.

Might have to attempt some of these suggestions on MP Megs feet.

There's a difference between rust and tarnish. Megsy just needs a polishing cloth akin to those you would use on silverware

Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a go.
