According to here, the frame was designed and then printed on a 3D printer, and then the cake bits were placed over each section to make the body and frosted/iced.
There must have been a lot of work done to get it just right... unless the guy was really lucky, or one of the best engineers in the world to have it all balance and move with enough clearance on each part.
Best cake ever. lol
The arm design makes me think a lot of it was inspired by Rescue Bots toys.

I'm very impressed, really interesting concept and in my mind well executed design. I don't know if he'll be able to remember it in years to come but he just had one of the most awesome birthday cakes of all time.
looking around the room it's good that every one was able to watch it happen on their phone so they can remember it easily later...

The footage appeared on local Channel 9 news today. The segment also showed a Chinese dad who built a 5m(?) tall Bumblebee from 'scrap' metal for his kid.
