    I can live with it but would have liked it if he was able to go toe to toe with City Commander like the old Marvel comics.

    The sculpt and proportions on this is spot on...
    It's got a nice anime samurai appearance (to me at least).
    I really like it but would very much prefer it to be larger in size.

    Looking at the pictures, I can't work out what that erect piece behind his head in bot mode serves in alt mode. Any idea?

    It's kind of a stand/third leg, mostly for alt-mode balance/stability - I think. The original G1 design had something similar.
