View Full Version : Bay to do TMNT

My guess is if you're asking people on this forum which they prefer the majority are going to select the first picture because it's what most of us grew up with (if going by Trev's 'Average age of your Transformers Fan/Ozformers Member'). I would too. But I'm open to change and interpretation. We went through the same thing when images of TF1 were released and Optimus Prime had a mouth. We're all used to it by now. It's a generational thing.
I am not used to Prime's mouth ;)
I reposted that from FB. I think the comparison is interesting to say the least.

The mouth is the least of the problems I have adjusting to the movieverse Prime. It's the fact that he's a bloodthirsty, merciless and extremely destructive killing machine that only sees issues in black and white.
The biggest problem I have with this new April is that she is a journalist/reporter that's using a cameraphone to record the scoop of the century :p

Don't worry, Will Arnett's in the movie as Vern, April's cameraman. Proper cameraman, not smartphone user. He's just not in this trailer.

This attitude amuses me. How would you have someone who has watched his enemies destroy his entire planet and race over a period of millennia act?
You'd be out there claiming decepticon faces left right and centre too ;)

But Optimus Prime in the original cartoons and comics was our Generation's Superman - he stood for everything that was right, and taking a life was a last-resort... even to the point of sacrificing his own life if it was the honourable thing to do (Marvel Gen1 #24).
If a new Superman movie was produced that had him killing offenders, or even trying to kill Lex Luthor, there would be an outrage, because that is not the "pure" character that Superman stands for that inspired so many kids (and some grown-ups).
You trust him because he has never broken that faith in him.
The character of Optimus Prime in probably every incarnation before Bay got his hands onto it, was similarly one that fans could look up to, as a "hero" who never compromised his honour to defeat the enemy.
To Bay, Optimus was just another "wild west, gun-toting American".

And that is awesome about Prime, but how many cybertronian and human lives have his morals cost? Prime has had countless chances to kill Megatron in every continuity, but his inaction has ALWAYS gone on to cost many more lives. Quite personally while I admire Prime's values, I wouldn't follow him. He is an ineffective leader, time and again putting his morals above the lives of those he is trying to protect.
Hence why I love Dai Atlas. There was a bot who could get shit done! (http://youtu.be/C3PYqjveSgM)

So our champion is a mentally scarred war-hero? A robotic Frank Castle? :D
Frank Castle is the Punisher to save some a google search :p

By your logic the best thing Prime could ever have done was simply to step aside and let Megatron win. Honestly this would save the most lives however the quality of those lives may be brought to question. Many real-world leaders and un-sung heroes have done this in our history. Anyway makes for a crap movie and we're not here to debate philosophy:p
Back to TMNT
I hope Splinter gets some decent screen time and doesn't become a macguffin the turtles need to rescue. It would be great if we get a master yoda type treatment where we see him completely dominate some foot.

I've seen the odd trailer for the movie. Sorta interested and sorta not. As it is I've missed the last couple of Turtle flicks.
What's with the latest TMNT cartoon though? I saw it this morning - using the TMNT cartoon I grew up with as a reference, Donatello now has Raphael's voice and April O'Neil has gone from a reporter who had a rack so huge it's a wonder she didn't have back problems to a teenager with latent psychic abilities - it totally weirded me out! I will say though, it's the first time that the TMNT have really been obviously animated as teenagers so I thought that was kinda cool.

There is a big following for the new Nick Ninja Turtles but I frankly don't see the appeal. I am more of a fan of 2003 Turtles.
I don't think you need to have watched anything before seeing Bay Turtles. You probably don't even need to see the beginning of the movie to follow the plot as there will likely not be any.

New trailer (#3) looks very good, and it would seem that the focus falls a fair part on my favourite turtle!
Megan Fox looks like she will be struggling through most of this film, like a fish gaping on the bottom of a boat.

For school holidays? Or it could mean they don't expect it to do well. The months before and after Christmas (sept/oct/nov/Feb/mar)are really quiet in cinemas and when the majority of either crappy or smaller movies are released so they don't compete with the big ones.

As someone who managed a cinema, I can tell you that any time around school holidays is premium when it comes to films appealing to ten year olds.
Definitely a delay because of the school holidays.
Shame really, I refuse to pay premium prices for a month old movie.

I think people would have said the same thing 24 years ago, when I was that younger kid going to school holiday movies and the original TMNT movie came out and critics were going on about how it was too violent and a bad influence and unsuitable for kids.
I also can't believe how long ago that was.

And back then we had the original toon that got us interested first, and gave us a reason to want to see the movie.

Thats because TMNT was initially release for mature audiences in the comics. None of this blue, red, orange and pruple bs.

I remember my teacher advising us against watching that movie and how it "contains 172 acts of violence" or something like that. Made us want to watch it more. ;) I remember joining a really long line that went around the street corner to buy tickets, then after that going to play the TMNT arcade game until the session time started. :D

You can't blame Michael Bay for this, but today Paramount released a poster that included: the Turtles, a New York City building being destroyed and a date of September 11 (http://mumbrella.com.au/paramount-pictures-removes-controversial-911-ninja-turtles-poster-social-media-241539).

Somehow not surprised. A lot of sociopaths in Hollywood so they would not understand how something like that would affect people. Anything to make a buck.
I know the poster is Australian but it needs to be approved first. They just thought they could get away with it in another region.

These studios never learn. If it's not a worldwide simultaneous release, you're just inviting people to download the movie instead. Do they not get it? It's called the 'world wide web' for a reason. Local distribution means nothing these days ;)

With just preview screenings last weekend, TMNT is number one at the Aussie box office. Pretty good effort.
The more I've seen in trailers/ads etc the more I think it could be okay. Sure there's a Bay-filter over the top of the film, the noses and clothes are weird but the general forms are okay, and April is unlikely to be well served compared to her first film outing, but it still appears to be more consistent to the original properties than TF films.
I'm going to be checking it out as soon as I can and hope for the best.

I started this thread because I was a naysayer. I saw this movie today and am now a yay-sayer.
Will avoid plot, joke and easter egg spoilers here...
I really enjoyed this. I think it did everything right that Transformers did wrong. It was clearly respectful of and inspired by what went before. I feel like there's a bit of everything in the mix here (original comics, original cartoon, original movie, modern
cartoons) and it works. The individual easter egg-style nods are great to spot.
The movie is fun, and funny (without needing toilet humour and "happy time" jokes). The action was good, easy to follow and the Turtles are tough. Shredder was a tough opponent, a little gimmicky but a threat. Splinter got to shine. The Turtle designs worked. The clothes, noses etc don't look good as static toys but they work in the movie.
Going in I was most concerned about April, but Megan Fox was great. Her April was proactive and a driver of the plot. Although an object of desire she is no one's love interest and barely a damsel in distress. If she'd only played this character in the TF films, and the Witwickys had been ditched. (I never mind her in TF really, she's just over made up and the Bay controlled camera too sleezy).
On the con side, there is a bit of over-the-top product placement (but not at the TF film level). It's probably just a little bit too long, and it's a little violent for the little ones. Also not enough Whoopi.
I'm a lapsed TMNT fan and I hear more recent takes are really good too, but this really worked for me.

The thing I hate most about Bay movies are the cringeworthy Bay invented comic relief characters (that everyone else in the cinema cacks themselves over) Hopefully Mikey means that spot's already taken it.

If by original story you mean the black and white comics, then yes they changed a lot of things. There's inspiration from most (maybe all) of the various versions of TMNT.
On the plus side, they are definitely not aliens. On the downside, Daredevil is not involved in their origin.
As I say I think it's closest to the current IDW comic origin but the general broad strokes origin is still in play. It's much closer than the TF movie is to the original TF story(s).

It was indeed an enjoyable film, however I was constantly taken out of the film whenever Mikey would talk/refer to April: WTF was up with that? - "Hello baby, Oh! - My shell's getting tighter!"... !?!:mad:
How they explained the whole Ninjitsu/Ancient Japanese Teachings of the Turtles and (More so) Splinter was just ridiculous and a last-minute thought which clearly few neurons were committed.
There were also some scenes that were very obviously "3D"-scenes and in a 2D viewing looked like bad '90s CG composition, like, "Next Mutation" level! - Specifically one where it's Splinter & April standing face to face, April wasn't even looking in Splinter's direction for Pete's sake!:p
I also agree with those that felt the film was too April-centric; it damn well was and though the Brothers Green got more screen time than any Transformer did in a film of the last decade, they still deserved more I feel. :o
Beyond those issues I quite enjoyed it and am looking forward to its sequel, hopefully with less Mikey/April sexual innuendo and more Turtles in general - I will also say that the guy doing Donnie's voice sure does do a good Rob Paulsen impersonation.

I feel the original cartoon's origins would've worked better, as I just can't see 15 years being enough time to master an art to a "Miyagi"-level, you know?... Plus that little Rat puppet in the cage in the original was just cool! :D
It was the weakest part of the film for me and I feel it's likely a result of that mid-production halt the film experienced. :o
