This thread is for posting any Transformers references in other movies, TV shows, books, etc. that you may come across from time to time, however obvious, ambiguous, direct or indirect they may be...

So I found a possible one just now while watching Monday night's Grey's Anatomy (season 9, episode 14, The Face of Change). This was shown for a few seconds, right at the end of the episode:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc196/Crystine_of_Cybertron/Other/GreysAnatomyS09E14_zpse14bbfad.png

:) It may or may not have been intentional - but I think it was.. :p:D Quite a funny episode, actually.

Yep, I also remember OP as a Jew segment on Family Guy, and didn't Soundwave make an appearance as well?

Looking at your screen cap above also had me wondering, why are Transformers and Care Bears often seen together? :p

The Professional with Jean Reno, Gary Oldman, and a very young Natalie Portman. There were several scenes in which Natalie's character was seen watching the G1 cartoon.

I sometimes hear the phrase "more than meets the eye" used on TV or commercials... I wonder if it was a phrase before Transformers, or if it has since become a part of vernacular for being well known and understood as to what it means (something surprisingly unexpected).

In the sitcom Roseanne, in the one of the early seasons, the girls are cleaning up their brother's room, and a Gen1 Metroplex is one of his toys on his bed (plus a Castle Greyskull in the back corner).

In a recent episode of The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon talks about how he likes Transformers.

In Community they start guessing different names and then the names become... "Bluestreak? Optimus Prime?" to which the girl responds "Now even I know some of these are the names of Transformers".

There was an add running for The Colbert Report for ages where he said "And as the President landed in what I can only assume to be a Transformer"

Can't remember the name of the song but on one of my cd's there is a song where the line is "And if not for the Decepticons, they'd rule the f@#king world"

There is another song on Youtube called 'You, me and Optimus Prime'

On the cartoon show 'Frisky Dingo' they talked about needing a bad guy toy for the good one to fight and the guys says "A Decepticon to your Autobot". Also on that show the X-ticles renamed themselves 'The Decpeticles' and their theme song was (same tune as Transformers) 'The Decepticles, more than you bargained for'

In Archer, Pam is coughing from smoking a spliff down the intercom and tried to cover it by saying 'Transform', like she was imitating the noise. Also in another episode she had taken hallucinegons and stared accusing her co-workers of being Decepticons. At the end of the episode she is smashing a toilet yelling 'Must. Kill. Decepticons!'

In Scubs they painted a mural on the baby's wall of Optimus & Megatron fighting.

Interestingly, they used Dreamwave art for Megatron and G1 Powermaster Optimus Prime box art for Prime.

Just thought of another one!

(Not for kiddies)

In the DVD Seth McFarlene's Calvalcade of Cartoon Comedy, a running joke throughout the DVD is a short sketch of "Sex with..." (examples - Sex with a midget, Sex with Gilbert Godfried). One of them is Sex with Optimus Prime, which shows a woman naked bent over a bed. Optimus is holding the whole bed up against his crotch, thrusting away going "Almost, almos...t" and at the high point of the act Transforms into a Truck, crushing her and the bed, and blows white smoke from his smokestacks and blood seeps out from under his tires. Nearly died laughing when I saw it (but wont be showing it do my infant son)!

The Seventh Doctor was the one who removed him from the Transformers' universe (Crossroads in Time). Perhaps the Eleventh Doctor can undo it and put him back, yes? ;) (unlikely unless Marvel, BBC and IDW can come to some sort of agreement on it :p)

Seems like a lot of Transformers references cropping up in other media is not suitable for children. Most of it seems aimed at males in their 20's and 30's ;)

Just thought of a couple more.

In Drawn Together, Foxy Love is trying to find a surrogate father and ends up in a house with essentially Megatron. The giant robot orders her to transform and when she says she can't he turns into a giant gun and points himself at her face ordering her to transform again.
Also one day Foxy, Captian Hero and the rest are sitting round watching as they describe it 'Transformers Porn' (I'm so thankful they did not show the TV screen). You hear a female robotic voice go 'Not in my hair, I have a date', and Foxy says 'You know that Dinosaur Plane was touched as a child'.

(Note: The other day I put Arcee & Arachnia into a google image search engine, innocently trying to find a pic of them fighting and instead... dear Primus... there are some sad, messed up people out there who have tried to create their own TF porn. Ewwwwwww!)

On 'The Mr Hell Show', a nerdy guy's girlfriend is about to leave him because of his house full of collectables. In a bid to stop her he suddenly seems to grow armor and weapons and says 'Look! I'm megaprime (or something), leader of the Transformibles!' When she pushes past him and leaves his shoulders sag and he says mornfully 'I can turn into a tank as well'

Aww man, I forgot about that one! Yeah, saw it when they did the first run on SBS and had a good laugh. If I remember correctly, the closing credit gag was a repeat of the scene with added clanging sounds and the odd "prepare to recieve download" cry.

Most likely because they realise that the children of the 80s are now in that age demographic. :) But it's nothing new, we've seen Transformers content 'age' itself gradually as far back as G1.

For example, the Season 3 episode "God Gambit" was an analogy about religion, and what people are willing to do in the name of religion and how religion can be abused to brainwash and mentally enslave people. And of course, Astrotrain takes full advantage of this by making the people worship him and follow his orders without question. In the later G1 comics we saw that there was an underground cult of Cybertronians who worshipped Unicron and were willing to attack the Autobot-Decepticon Alliance in the name of their dark lord. So we can see some of the later G1 stories did touch upon some heavier issues, but presented in a way that was more age-appropriate to the target audience (it's not gonna be quite as 'in your face' as Monty Python's The Life of Brian for example :p ;)).

When Beast Wars was being made, the producers realised that the children of the 80s who grew up with G1 were now in their teens and 20s, so they also significantly matured the way that the stories were written (making Beast Wars the single best written Transformers story on screen IMHO). And the writers loaded the show with carefully masked sexual innuendo! :D As a uni student at the time, I remember watching this show and just laughing my butt off at the plethora of cleverly concealed dirty jokes! ;)

...then we got Michael Bay, where the live action Transformers films gave us toilet humour that was about as subtle as clipping your toenails with a jackhammer.

My wife texted me this morning. Apparently on Sesame Street they have each episode "the word on the street" and this mornings episode the word on the street was 'Transform'.

So some of the puppets were dressed as robots. One of the human actors said "I used to love transforming into a robot when I was a kid! Who are you transforming into? Bumblebee? A Decepticon?"

My friend put me onto this video on YouTube (http://youtu.be/Hnjdq32u-MU). It is a "documentary" on the occult references found in 80s cartoons by 2 nutjobs. It picks on MOTU, Thundercats, Barbie, D&D, Voltron, Smurfs, My Little Pony, ET and others. Transformers gets a mention at about 1:20 abou the sheer violence of it. Apparently he ranks it and GI Joe as the most violent shows on TV at the time with 80 acts of violence per episode :D

It goes for a while but is great for a laugh.

Transformers is probably the most violent kids' cartoon on TV! Always has been. That's what happens when your characters are robots and thus exempt from the same constraints that exist for people and animals. There's NO way they could repeatedly tear up a character like Waspinator over and over again in a regular kids' cartoon! You'd only see it in adult-oriented cartoons like South Park.

"Oh my God, they killed Waspinator!"
"You <people-born-to-unmarried-parents>!"

I agree, with one exception, TMNT. the current series is pretty violent. if there were human characters treated in the same way the Krang and other mutants were treated it would be at least MA.

I remember when that was doing the rounds a couple years ago, and fans were so annoyed at how low the "expert" valued the collection... probably hoping that they could get dibs on it later when the Pawn people offered an amount that the expert knew would be rejected.
I visited the Toy Shack this year (http://www.toycollectors.com.au/bc13/bc13jun21.html) (the store the expert was from) and it even has a sign out the front saying that they are featured on the Pawn Stars show... and it is a huge shop, so this guy would have been experienced enough to know that this collection was worth at least $50,000. The owner said there was over 1000 figures, and he could get $20,000 just from the handfull of city-formers he had in the back corner.
I wish I'd remembered this episode when I was at the Toy Shack, so I could see if this guy was there, and probe his mind for his motives.

So many interesting tales I've heard about that. Pity it's so hard to know what's true and what's just rumour.

I've seen the toy guy make mistakes a few times, and considering he's mainly a Hot Wheels guy, I put some of it down to inexperience.

The way he 'authenticated' some vintage Star Wars figures was laughable.

The parody movie "Meet the Spartans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meet_the_Spartans)" (mostly parodying the movie 300) was on tonight, and I don't recommend it at all (it was just playing while I was on the computer)... but I was surprised (and laughed) at the Transformers Movie reference near the end.
The king Xerxes was running from the Spartan king and trips over a cube half buried in the dirt. He grabs it and refers to it as the "Transformers Cube", hops into a car with it, and promptly "transforms" into a robot (him inside it like an exosuit). As he advances on the Spartans he pulls out his extension cord and falls over dead.

Do not subject yourself to this movie just to see what I'm talking about, it is that bad... fortunately there is a clip of the scene on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkInPAWjtPg) (which is less than a minute long).

This movie was horrible. As I recall it was released at around the height of the first live action film's popularity and that particular scene was extremely exploitative and cringeworthy.

I have to admit I did laugh at the Britney Spears bits though

IIRC it's from the same mob who made Epic Movie, which is also horrifically bad. Can't believe I wasted my time/money watching Epic Movie in the cinema. :( I find when it comes to their movies, all the funny stuff is in the trailer (and maybe some excerpts you can find later on YouTube). None of their actual movies are worth watching in their entirety.

I've been expecting to see something TFs related in the many parody movies in the last 8 years, due to the Billion Dollar impact of the Live Action Movies to mainstream society... but this was the only one I've come across so far, and it wasn't funny at all.

Yep that's a classic reference to the 1980s Transformers (and one of my favourite movies)... I was just wondering if there has been any parody references to the live action movies (aside from Meet the Spartans), as I've seen other recent multi-movie series featured more significantly in parody movies. (for example, Xmen, Lord of the Rings, Spiderman, Matrix, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Carribean).

It's a documentary about voice actors and includes Transformers voice actors Steve Blume, Nolan North, Jess Harnell, David Kaye Tara Strong and John DiMaggio. It's really great and features tons of voice actors from many shows from many decades. Well worth watching.

I quite like it, I don't watch it religiously but it has a lot of 80's references either in the script or on the screen that make it very enjoyable.
I would really like to watch this episode but given the number of times this is repeated here and who knows how far behind the US we are, I'll probably get around to watching it sometime in the next 5 years.

Their episodes are only about 10 minutes long, but feature a lot of 80s references and toys.
One episode last night had a "where are they now" type of skit of 80s action figure characters, and Soundwave was a port-a-loo at a rock event.

I think this is the first time Robot Chicken has been on free-to-air TV here?

I think those ads can be useful and challenge the thought process of people to not be so dismissive and negligent about the dangers around the house... but the ad should have had parents talking about what their kids were missing, and not show children, as the start draws in children's attention and has adults tuning out... missing the whole point of educating the parents.

Demonac showed me an episode of The Goldbergs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Goldbergs_(TV_series)), that heavily featured Transformers... because the youngest kid in the show gets so upset about Optimus dying in the 1986 movie, that he tries to make his own home movie with Optimus surviving (remember, in America they didn't get the epilogue that we got here, to reassure us that Optimus would return).

It was season 2, episode 11 (https://youtu.be/f6xDPirAqxc?t=3m15s) (that's a youtube clip, starting at the good part, as half the episode is about his older brother trying to get a girlfriend... so just jump past those scenes if you want, or watch the whole episode from the beginning). Just don't miss the end bit, which includes the show's creator playing the actual home video he made as a kid in the 80s. (this TV show is based on the childhood of its creator)

This particular episode is so funny, because when the kid is talking about things in the 1986 movie, you know as a fan what is about to happen.

Sign of a sad super-geek spotting an "inaccurate" prop for an 80s TV show... by freeze-framing a scene at the start of that episode to see what version of Optimus Prime Adam is holding onto while talking to his dad, and noticing that it is not an original 1980s Optimus toy, but must be one of the 2004/2009 Hasbro reissues because of the small smokestacks. :o:o:o

(I actually laughed out aloud when I saw it, because I then imagined being one of those obsessive people for details, complaining about the TV show being cheap/lazy by not using a real 1980s Optimus toy... :p )

How weird is this... two episodes of the Simpsons in the last two weeks had Transformers references.
One was on last week, called the Treehouse of Horror 19, which had a bit about an alien transforming robot race destroying Springfield while battling, until Marge convinces them to stop fighting each other... only to have them team up to enslave the Humans of Springfield. It was actually very funny because two were very much homages to Optimus and Megatron... and there was a transforming Malibu Stacy car (their homage to Barbie), making it look like a Barbie Transformers crossover toy.

The second episode that was on this week was just a regular episode, but for some reason, a random guy showed up with "Transformers The Ride" on the back of his work gear, but there was nothing said or done about it or about that guy... so it was just product placement, which is really odd for The Simpsons (who only do fake product placements to make fun of how bad they can be done - and this didn't relate to anything in the episode that I could tell, so just didn't make sense).

Groundhog Day (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groundhog_Day_%28film%29) probably took it from Transformers if one copied the other, as that movie was released in 1993... almost 10 years later.

Seems that musical directors are running out of ideas by turning movies into stage productions - I just saw on the wiki page that they are doing a musical version of Groundhog Day this year...

It's the exact same thing as is happening in cinema. There's plenty of new and original musicals being created (just like there's plenty of original movies being made) but musical and movie producers know that if they use an existing property the brand recognition will sell more tickets.

So there's a steady flow of both new musicals and movies that are adaptations of existing movies/books and sometimes the movie producers will look at musicals based on movies and turn them into new musical movies! (Hairspray, The Producers). And there's a couple of musicals based on movies that I love much more than the original films (Legally Blonde, Shrek, Priscilla, and Billy Eliot are in my top ten musicals of all time).

A pair of references in anime.

In the English dub of the anime Sgt. Frog, the second story of episode 34 called "Frog on the run" there is a scene where the Characters Fuyuki and Keroro find a construction vehicle demolishing a building and have this (slightly erroneous) exchange

Fuyuki: It kinda looks like a Constructicon.
Keroro: Oh my frog god, I hadn't thought of that. I might just be looking at an actual, real life Transformer.
Fuyuki: Yeah, it's too bad though. It's gotta tear down that old building.
Keroro: Kero? he should be fighting Decepticons, leave the Pekopon destruction to Agol Mois. Heehee, yeah. I should really get around to conquering this place.

The series (a comedy about a group of Frog-like aliens coming to conquer earth, but mostly just goofing off) was always full of referential humor, but the English dub really goes all out making pop-culture references and trying to be as "funny" as possible. personally, I really enjoy it.

in another anime I enjoy that is full of pop-culture references. Hayate the Combat Butler (Hayate no Gotoku) during the first opening theme song of the series. there is a moment where the shadows of 3 giant robots loom over the protagonists. one of which is clearly G1 Optimus Prime.

For those who watch a bit of SBS, you may have seen the "Baking Month" promos recently that have a new show on during June, called Cake Wars, with some commercials showing an Optimus Prime cake.
The cooking contest show "Cake Wars (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cake_Wars#Episode_guide)" has had five seasons in the last two years, with each episode being themed for the contestants, and during the fourth season (late 2016), they had a Transformers episode.
It aired in America on October 31st, 2016, and if scheduling holds up, it should be on channel 33 (SBS's food channel) next Saturday (June 10th) at 7.30pm.
They are showing season 4 episodes on Saturday and Sunday (2 episodes per day), while showing season 3 episodes on Monday to Friday (one episode per day). Since the Transformers episode is the sixth one in season 4, it should be on next Saturday.

The official website only shows the winning cake (http://www.foodnetwork.com/shows/cake-wars/photos/the-winning-creations-from-cake-wars-season-4), which is photo 17 & 18 on their slideshow, so to see how it is created, and the other cakes that didn't win, tune in next weekend. (if my estimate is out, I will post up a correction as soon as it shows up on the tvguide)

While looking to see if this was posted up here last year when it was mentioned on the American fansites (we didn't), I did come across this Transforming cake posting from 2015 (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=21495)... which is worth mentioning again.

Well that was... interesting.

Their guest of this episode was a "Senior VP Global Brand Licensing Manager" at Hasbro by the name of Simon Waters.... someone I've never heard of before, so is either new (this episode was produced late 2016), or someone who isn't involved with Transformers enough to appear at Conventions or Product videos.
The Hasbro guest judge noted that he loved the Autobot symbol on the front of one of the Blurr cakes, but it was not very well done, so maybe he doesn't have much to with Transformers at all to even know what an Autobot symbol actually looks like.

Unless all of these bakers were long time fans of Transformers, I think they must have been given guides on the different series over the years or allowed to do some internet researching, because a number of ideas were a bit obscure (like Animated Blurr and Combiner Wars Leader Megatron) or a mix of different series together on the one cake.

The first round of four teams had to create in 75 minutes, a cake that represented their "all time favourite Transformers character", but I didn't realise Blurr was that popular, as these were the four cakes...
- a mid-transformation Blurr cake (looks like it was based on the GEN-2010 redeco of the first Generations Drift toy)
- an Animated Blurr cake (just the car mode on top and a 2D face on the side of the cake)
- "Gen1" Optimus Prime on top of a round building (Optimus looked more like Softimus Prime, being very rounded and cuddly like a plush toy)
- Gen1 Soundwave breaking out of the street (the person painting it called it Optimus at one point)

The team that did the Animated Blurr cake was eliminated, and the last three teams moved onto round two, which gave them 4 hours to make an "epic battle" themed cake.

- a city battle with Combiner Wars Optimus vs CW Megatron, and a lenticular Autobot/Decepticon symbol on the top.
- layers of several cakes that represent Cybertron to Earth with several characters all over it, from different eras (probably not intentional though).
- a giant Optimus Prime (time ran out before the head was painted, leaving it completely white - this was the same team that did Soundwave in the first round, and it's head was white too).

From that second round, one team was eliminated (the giant Optimus), and the remaining two teams go on (to a final or to the next episode), with the Optimus Vs Megatron cake being announced the winner, earning that team $10,000 and having their cake taken to a party somewhere unknown (briefly shown, with probably only a dozen people and kids - other end of episode parties are usually huge with a hundred plus people).

Various commercials for this "baked month" on SBS had a transforming Optimus truck that looked like a cake, which I thought was from this episode... but it wasn't, and must be from another TV show on this month, or just a clip they pulled from youtube.

We all remember that scene - when all the Autobots had to carefully upright Prime and he struggled to transform to robot mode. Yet later in MTMTE Pt 3 we see Optimus Prime fall to the earth from the stratosphere, after chasing the Decepticon ship with Sideswipe's rocket pack -- and Prime is perfectly fine. :o

It says something about how often BotCon was at Pasadena, when the Auditorium building next to the Convention centre that hosted four BotCons, becomes immediately recognisable in just the opening seconds of a recent episode of NCIS.

Last week's episode (in Australia) was episode 19 of season 14 (The Wall), and it started out (before the credits) with a tour-group of war veterans at a "Washington DC" museum, but the front of the building caught my eye as being very familiar.

Since I've never been to DC, I knew it had to be Pasadena (in Los Angeles)... and looking through my thousands of BotCon photos, sure enough, it was what I thought it was.

It was really hard to look through those photos too (from BotCon 2004, 2009, 2011, 2014), with so many great memories, and the sad thought that I may never end up going back there, even if BotCon is revived by a new business. It was a great location, with LA being the easiest/cheapest city to fly to from Australia, and has so many tourist options, including themeparks and Hollywood studios.

It was the same feeling I had after FunPub took over BotCon in 2005, realising that I'd probably never go back to Fort Wayne in Indiana, which was my favourite BotCon city until Pasadena started to get used.

Maybe one day I'll return to America. I miss all those familiar faces, friends and places I met over the 17 years of trips to America since BotCon 1999.

Various commercials for this "baked month" on SBS had a transforming Optimus truck that looked like a cake, which I thought was from this episode... but it wasn't, and must be from another TV show on this month, or just a clip they pulled from youtube.

I noticed the other day another themed cake show had started, taking the place of the Cake Wars program on Channel 33... and checking the TV guide on Wednesday night, I saw that the episode that evening had Transformers mentioned, so I figured that this might be where the transforming Optimus cake was from in those commercials a few weeks back.
I set the recorder for the midnight repeat screening, and sure enough, this was the one... and it was so much more interesting than the Cake Wars episode.
This one featured research and clips from Transformers, and ended with an actual party at the Universal Studios, with Frank Welker and Peter Cullen as featured guests.

The episode had three projects throughout the hour, but someone has posted up a youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBEqZhV8zyo) of just the Transformers portions, which goes for 29 minutes. (definitely watch it if you have a chance, especially if you've never seen Peter or Frank use their Transformers voices in public before)

Doing a little research on this, the party at the end of the episode was back in February 2nd 2015 (http://forums.insideuniversal.net/threads/transformers-the-ride-3d.11015/page-20#post-538003), but the episode didn't air in America until May 3rd 2016 (http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/threads/cakemasters-on-food-network-make-a-transforming-optimus-prime-cake.1066215/).

The Goldbergs has already been mentioned having heaps of Transformers references, toys and a lot of Stan Bush music, and in a recent episode, one of the toys in the background in Adam's room was a Gen1 Jetfire.... a very yellowed Gen1 Jetfire. It seems that the props department acquired some vintage Transformers toys for the 1980s bedroom, but ended up with a Jetfire that didn't look like it was "new" for that time. (I don't think the yellowing was noticeable until at least into the 1990s... and this one was very yellowed, so was either out in the sun every day, or it was a 30 year old toy.

An episode in this season of Family Guy, has a nod to Transformers, as the theme of the episode is how a particular event would have been interpreted by three different directors, with one being Michael Bay. (none of the actual directors were involved)

Anyway, enjoyed the Hasbro/TF references (possibly the only enjoyable parts of the film). For me...

* I've never seen Hasbro's US head office, but the shots of Hasbro in the film look very similar in style to Hasbro Australia's old office in Epping (I haven't been to their new office)

* There sure was a lot of Transformers product placement in the film, which is funny given that Marky Mark is in this film. I was hoping to see a fourth wall break with him walking past an AoE poster showing Cade Yeager (did that happen? I must say that I struggled to pay attention to this train wreck of a movie).

* The rogue Hasbro guy saying that he's from Mattel.

...man... suddenly Bayformers doesn't look so bad.

I was not a fan of the first Ted movie, so fortunately I taped this one to watch later in the night and fast-forward past all the bits that were just too boring or too crude to be funny. I managed to get it down to about 30 minutes.
It actually had a lot more to do with Hasbro than I thought... and I forgot that the Ted toy was apparently a Hasbro toy (within the universe of the Ted movie) in the first Ted movie. As such, I was too busy looking for all of the random Transformers toys that were in the Hasbro office and at the NYCC (you could tell that Hasbro must have paid a fair bit to be in this movie, as there were Transformers props and signage everywhere during the NYCC scenes. It was funny to see them destroying the displays that had TF4 Movie toys in them... and you could even see the SDCC exclusive Knights of Unicron rockband set in one of the display cases.

As noted by Goktimus, I actually got a laugh from the Hasbro executive (character, not an actual Hasbro employee) claiming to be from Mattel after he got busted at the end.
(I was surprised that they actually name dropped the CEO of Hasbro in the movie - Brian Goldner - when it wasn't even necessary... he didn't have to be named, or a fake name could have been said - he did get named in the credits though, in the "thanks" section.)

Speaking of credits - both the New Zealand government and Australian government gave grants to the Ted 2 movie... even though it was filmed in America (because some of the digital effects were done in Melbourne).

Not an actual Transformers reference, but the timing is coincidental.
Kia have a new sports car out this year called the Stinger and the marketing images on TV and online are of a red version.
It is said to have been in development since 2014... but I didn't see when the name was officially given to it though.
But would there really be any cashing in on a one off movie character from 4 years ago.... probably not.
Now if they did a yellow hatchback and called it the Bumblebee, that would probably work.

The last two episodes of The Good Place (Kristen Bell, Ted Danson, on Netflix, highly recommended) have had Transformers jokes.

No clips because both include big spoilers for the show, but the references were:

When told there would be a special vehicle one character asked if it would be Optimus Prime, and then called "Right nipple" which he explained is calling Shotgun when riding in Optimus Prime.

The new Volkswagen commercial playing on TV here in the last week... with a boy in a party costume that transforms into a yellow VW sedan... is just the right yellow to make me think of Bumblebee - which might not be a coincidence, as there was probably some cross-promotional agreements with their involvement in the Bumblebee movie. So even though there is no mention of Transformers or the Movie in the commercial, the concept and colours were probably intentional so that it was in people's minds when the Bumblebee movie comes out later this year.

We had a shower in our house and a bath but it wasn't a bath. You would hook up this thing and it would turn the shower into a bath. It was a transformer.

(Singing)Transformers, showers in disguise.

Imagine getting one of those for your kid for Christmas "But you said you wanted a Transformer"

Oh, that reminded me that Robin Williams once did a skit about Transformers too, when he was discussing how you can't get intoxicated anymore when you become a parent:

You can't be stonned because they have toys that will mess your head up! If your stonned with a Transformer:

I agree that loot boxes in games are designed to be addictive and are an attractive form of 'gambling' available to whoever plays. but I also agree that these people clearly have a problem and should have stopped long before they got in the spot they are in, regardless of the other traumas in their lives at the time.

Whether it's something that needs to be legislated is up for debate. I'm pretty sure you can set locks on these games that don't allow the user to automatically spend money on in game purchases so that parents don't have kids blow out their cards.

Hey, I can understand, the game they are discussing (Earth Wars) is the game app I have spent more on than any other.

Of course that equals a whopping $7.99 :p

And even then the only reason I did it was I pressed the wrong button one day and wasted 6 months worth of cyber coins I’d hoarded, so in a once-off shelled out a whopping eight bucks and replaced them.

I have been a member of Alliances where the top players bitch about how they spend so much each event on recharges (often up to $150) and the rest of us don’t - but it’s their choice, and frankly a silly one

For anyone not up with the latest in gaming, loot boxes are a big issue in games right now. Star Wars Battlefront II (the one from EA released last November not the one from a decade ago) has predatory loot boxes and subsequently various governments and groups have woken up to their use in games.

Some people argue that they are a form of gambling and need to be regulated (note that nobody with half a brain is banned but rather "regulated").

Others argue that because you get an in game item not money they are not gambling and totally ok.

America will probably have a hard time regulating them because of the supreme court ruling in Schwarzenegger V EMA in which video games were declared protected speech which means the government can't regulate them.

However in parts of Europe and here in Australia things look more positive with government bodies recognising loot boxes as gambling and beginning the slow process of updating laws.

There was a South Park episode about it all many years ago, as Stan got addicted and kept doing all these little transactions which added up to thousands of dollars.

Sadly though, its these addicted people that make the games possible for the rest of us. The game designers need the money to make them and keep going with the updates, and if people aren't playing the games die, much like a few previous TF app games have done.

I think I've heard it said that 95% of the profits from these app games only comes from 5% of the players. Again, sad for them but if they were not doing so then people that never spend money on their apps like me wouldn't get to keep playing.

It's one of the very few cases where instead of the minority spoiling things for the majority, the minority actually make it possible for the majority to have their fun.

Oh I agree, but it seems to be the price of being able to download a game for free on your phone or ipad - that somewhere along the line they are going to figure out a way to get people to shell out some moula

That's why I like console games, and I've never been one for DLC purchases.
The exception and annoying thing for me is you can purchase DLC for DOAX3 on the PS4 in other countries but it doesn't work here - I'd buy some of the extras for that just to skip the grinding

The Sims 2 & 3 on PC had a lot of good expansion packs, but most didn't rate purchase until they dropped in price after a year

I have a set rule for myself when buying microtransactions.

If I know what I'm going to get for my money (ie: buying a new car in Forza with real world money) then it's ok as long as it's reasonably priced and within budget. But if it's got randomised items inside (like loot boxes) then don't buy it cause you likely will not get what you want.

The people that spend thousands on a game and account for most of the profits are called "whales". These people spend so much money in the game that often have special contact with the developer of the game and buy their in game items direct from the developer not the console/devices store. They basically call up the developer and say "hey I want to buy another $1000 of gems" and the developer charges their card themselves.

If you're Warren Buffett and can blow $1000 on a game then hey that's no big deal. The issue are people that can't afford it getting sucked in. Loot boxes are basically pokies that you never get any cash back.

Also be aware that if you ever buy a loot box or currency in a game many games especially the free to play ones will then modify the difficulty to make it harder for you to progress without giving them more money. It really is predatory.

On phones people are not willing to spend even a dollar up front on a game to own it and never deal with microtransactions. Yet for whatever stupid reason they will instead download it for free and then give the developer huge amounts of money over time.

It's unfortunate Hasbro has allowed their partners to use loot boxes and microtransactions with Transformers IP but there's not much they can do other than decide not to make a game.

That's them... sort of.
The first one is an extended version (with a flipped image when they are in the car, so that the steering wheel is on the correct side for that market)... while the second one is a completely different edit, promoting the auto-breaking feature (the first video, and our Australian version, features the auto-parking feature).

It's interesting to see that those two versions, have the boy trying to impress the girl at the party, but it is totally absent or unnoticed in the Australian version. (and I also don't think he transforms from car mode in the Australian commercial)

I only just saw this ad, I thought it was great (especially when the kid "transforms") and it immediately made me think of Bumblebee. Very cool and shows how far VW have come from the "no war toys" stuff regarding Transformers.

Sorry if slightly OT but If only Porsche would also come on board like VW have. Seeing the post on TFW2005 makes me think we won't see an MP Jazz which would make my collection feel incomplete.

From poster oku:

Someone above asked for a direct source about Jazz's licensing was an issue. Hope this is direct enough. Here's a report from 2016 convention where Yuki and Hasui mentioned about Jazz during Q&A session:

31号是老幸和莲井访谈,谈到了比如偷胶和第三方的一些问题,另外关于莲井在社内“Mr.红蜘蛛”的外号, 其实好像没有很多人这么叫他,倒是老幸打趣的称莲井为“Mr.MP”关于红蜘蛛先生这个外号的说法,主要是 莲井负责了众多的红蜘蛛玩具,有新的红蜘蛛玩具要出如果不让莲井来做社内也感觉做不好。
然后谈了关于MP的一些问题,比如爵士,在TT社内出爵士的的想法早就有,无奈车商并不给版权,双方协商了 多次也没有谈下来,老幸打趣说要是在座的各位能帮忙谈下车商版权就好了,另外台下有人喊探长,老幸说探长的 版权应该可以谈下来没有问题;另外关于史达和狮王的问题,老幸说只要公司一点头,随时开始准备MP狮王的工 作;

Volkswagen own Porsche... and now that Hasbro/TakaraTomy were allowed to do MP Bumblebee as a VW Beetle, it should be possible now to do Jazz.
VW/Porsche weren't interested before the Movies started (for the Alternators & early MP lines), but dollars will always speak loudest, and the billions in global marketing that GM got with their partnership with Transformers Movies, would have any car company begging to cash in, and do anything in return, like allow for their cars to be done as toys.
Something that was probably the case for the Bumblebee Movie. Hasbro and Paramount wouldn't have done anything or paid anything to have access to the VW Beetle design (for the movie and for the toys). If VW had said no, it would have been another car model used, and the nod to the 80s fans just would have been absent (without too much complaint).

If you want to licence a Porsche you deal with Porsche not VW. Most car brands deal with licensing in house not handling it through a parent, hence why we had licenced Lamborghinis a long time before VW.

Porsche is loosening up a bit as of late with their licensing, but they have been notoriously hard to deal with or charging extraordinarily high prices. There are only two toy companies I know of in the Australian market with Porsche licenses, Lego and Hot Wheels.

The way they worked the videogame licenses for ages was Porsche licensed only the Need For Speed games and then EA had option in their license to sub license to Microsoft so only two companies had licensed Porches for the better part of a decade.
