I'm doing my first ever Gundam, as a bit of fun. Rather than the regular colours, I've decided to paint him completely in metallics, using Alclad II lacquers. Some early shots:

The models are so precise. I'm loving the details, having a blast building and painting this guy. Feedback welcome.:)

I'm trying out the new Alclad transparent lacquers - my local hobby shop only has red, blue, yellow and green so far. I paint the chrome first, then the transparent over the top once the chrome is dry. The red, blue and yellow (gold) here are my second attempt - the rushed the first time, didn't do the chrome well enough and it came out looking drab. So I stripped it back and started over.

I used a similar technique with my G2 MP Grimlock's sword - blended the transparent yellow and red in seperate layers.

Looks great, i like it, saw a few pics of a metallic destiny the other day, makes me want to try my custom sooner. I have ordered a lowe guele red astray mg, in the hopes that the third party flight pack can fit it, then i just use the shield and rifle from my spare strike, and dont have to shell out for the p-bandai red frame. But if it doesnt fit, I'm looking to do some kind of metallic astray.

As for the nu ver ka, I'm still building it and i'll agree, it's an awesome kit, probably enjoying it the most out of all i've built, besides the clear raiser.

Edge of a hobby knife and fine sanding. No real rub points like a TF so didn't matter too much if there was a double up of paint, at least on the visible areas.

According to p bandai they open orders tomorrow for June intake so typically it was still correction it is still happening.

Either Ny has not realised they only been canceled for April and could have gotten later dates.

I have emailed ny as much as I have pre ordered another, I won't mind if I have a second confirmed.

They were decline by Bandai.
Stupid thing is I don't think ny realize there is a pre order open today. For June release but tgey focused in April and not may or June.

I think I am able to source for june release for 22, 000jpy plus ems shipping which is 6, 000jpy tops if anyone may be interested. Oh and is directly from p Bandai but payments will be up front. You will need to add extra money for perth ship to eastern states.

I am enquiring at the moment.

Unless ny get back to me and state they can make the orders I very much don't trust their words

Thanks for the offer, but i'll probably just pass altogether...i'm keeping my eye on another version of destiny at 1/100 instead (not the regular metal build), and use the money saved to get an airbrush.

My June Hein is confirmed. Lancalot has offered to take my April unit.

I definitely will look into using my alternative source for such items again the next time.

Ny has charged us more as well for the wings of light as the tax was not meant for us.

Ny has refunded my Hein . Overall I think they poorly handled it despite I gave heads up warning to us them to verify the order .

I think we all know Ny has been greedy over charging people and doesn't reward loyalty.

I just paid April Hein just waiting now and hopefully jpy is not too strong against the Aust by then.

Ny is listing above the rrp as Japan has 8% tax which we are not supposed to be paying.

That PG looks great! But im still sticking to 100 scale and looking forward to getting to my full armour green frame unicorn. Just picked up an airbrush so that may be a lot farther off than before.

As for the rest, i'd probably get the re100 efreet, but more interested in the freedom 2.0, i was silly and bought a strike freedom when i wanted a freedom, but my nephew has expressed his interest in taking it off my hands (its built already, my 2nd kit, panel lined but no decals).

Edit- gah just noticed the price for freedom 2.0, dont think its worth like 1800� more to me...

I'm still keen on gold astray if i see a good ebay sale again. As for the destiny, i dont know some peoples opinions about gundam but i get it should be similar to TFs so i'll quietly say i've preordered a 3p mg drstiny based on the metal build, and intend to paint it up heine colours. If i want a red/white/blue one i'll buy the regular mg kit.

I spent yesterday preparing an mg strike for priming, going a custom colour scheme in a way, still not sure if i'll put the aile pack on it and if i do what colours to paint it. Going to require a bit more planning anyway as i intend to use putty and glue and paint the frame.

Metal build are a totally different category to mg. While it is a save money concept buying mg and paint your own colors.

The trade off is the mb is well made toy and it reduce your own time in needing to build and paint.

Likewise I wasn't too happy to pay 28, 000 jpy for mb strike freedom as it is a model in mg I have several copies of.

If you are a toy collector is easier to comprehend. A friend of mine started to collect mb and said"wow the level of detail compared to the macross chogokin is miles apart, needless to say how the quality of a transformers mp compares."

Saying that as a modeler your creativeness is endless and can be better detailed than a mb.

Also the mb golden astray is easily available I can get them cheaply as in below 25, 000jpy

Yeah it would be awesome if they gave us more news about the Blue Frame but I think they'll probably go with the Red one for a while before we hear more of the Blue.

If you think about it, this year and next has quite a few Metal Builds... :)

If by viewing what was installed for us, there is actually noting I really want other then the blue frame with the big sword. A lot of the other metal builds doesn't really excite me. You have the red Astraea, Some red frame with some mining armour which makes no sense for me.

I am a bit disappointed they didn't go for OO Qant as they were just focusing on seed and OO, I would have thought that would be the next logical choice.
I am thinking if they decide to do the red seven sword as Tamashii nations exclusive next year.

Well at least I can save money not buying as I am not going to collect all kinda guy.

The HG Red Frame Astray is a pretty simple build - you probably could do it while on vodka. Just be careful with the cutting tools!

Yep the HGs are simple but I like doing them just for a couple of hours of fun....I do prefer the RG and MG but it just depends on my budget...

PG banshee option parts are rip off 6 sprew pieces costing $100! Is a joke.
Is no excuse why they excluded the claw and arm gun.

On the note I think someone approach me in regards to Heine and golden astray. As server was wiped I can't trace back who pm.
This is available at reasonable prices I think I am still able to source.

Strike freedom is unfortunate at ridiculous prices I wouldn't want to touch.

Just got this last month while I was in Tokyo for my wedding :p. Was there to kickstart my tank kits and found that hobby tools (especially tamiya) were amazingly cheap. Picked up my first ever Gundam kit as it was also on sale at Labi.

Please take note that Heine destiny metal build have ended officially for any orders. I can still place one if anyone still wants. My advice is don't wait as these things will shoot up in price.

May still be able to get an golden astray but I am not in luck for strike freedom.

They are all easy to put together, but that one is probably a bit more on the simple side because it's a NG kit (as I understand it). There's another version of Barbatos coming out later this year which looks a bit more involved, although I don't know what grade it is supposed to be - it's getting a bit confusing.

Raptormesh ..that a nice kit from what i heard ... yeah bandia gundam kits now are amazing in engineering now... they just snap fit together without glue at all and the colour are good as well that you dont need to paint if you dont want to ....

Where do you go to get reliable information about what's coming? I use Gundam.info a bit but it's a little bit hard to find information about releases. Are they any really good fansites?

I tend to check out http://gundamguy.blogspot.com it also regularly shows people's customs too.

That hi-res barbatos price is just wow, but at the moment from what we've seen, I'm happy enough to just skip the whole series in gunpla form.

i get paint from local hobby store or hobbyco... they have almost everything there ...and it reasonably priced.. if they dont have it then i get it from BNA model world , but i tend to wait until i need a few to save on postage ....

I also been decanting spray cans for basic colours like black and grey from them bargin store... at $3 a can it totally worth it.. but abit of a mess to do....

Also you can get nail polish at them places too for cheap and they come with some interesting colour ..like pearls ... which can be thin down with thinners where you can buy at bunning for cheap to clean your air / brushes ....

i think the high resolution one would be available every where . It be a mass produce one....
With your paint ... i tend to do my base colour in acrylic and then detail in enamel as enamel is it easy to fix , for panel lines and tiny detail , you can just use thinner to wipe off the mistake and that doesn't effect the acrylic. The clear coat at the end would determine if it glossy or not

Thanks for the top Lance. Do you mean to top coat islt in gloss before I use the enamel paints? Cause wiping with thinner would ruin the base coat no?

Part of my problem with both the Barbatos kits I've seen so far is that the legs just don't look right. The kits present the suit with straight, humanoid legs, but in the anime it sort of looks like it has semi-digitigrade legs (where there's a double-jointed knee that bends backwards, as in MTMTE Whirl). Neither the NG or the Hi-Res kit really seem to reflect that, though I think I've just seen a HG kit that might do it a little better. It's such a unique design feature that it's disappointing to not see it in the models.

Lucky i got him at a reasonable price... cuase he so fragile...
The QC on this guy is terrible... the first thing was that is left elbow was stuck and wouldn't move( it was glue from teh inside joint!! :rolleyes:) .. and then trying to fit adaptor for the stand too his Ass ..it didn't fit and like most of the other stuff as well started popping off ...the joint piece was just to big and split the the metal hip piece apart !!:eek: lucky i have all the tools and manage to fix it all of it up... mostly with help of good old super glue!! :D
at least this guy come with a bad ass super canon !!

While my strike freedom mb arrived , it is the heaviest mb till date.

It sure put down by far any transformers masterpiece in terms of quality. Is not miles apart is way light years apart, that's the difference.

Although is great, I think fans may argue that this isn't toon accurate toy.
In fact the normal freedom is in some ways better as is accurate and well made.

The strike freedom is all beefed up like on steroids and it doesn't give a real representation of the actual figure.

It makes destiny mb like a outcast in some ways and is not its match.

What I am slightly disappointed is that the markings do not match pg style or mg, the arch angles symbol are not present.

I can see why this piece is so expensive but if you paid rrp or less is worth it. Anything more is a bit rich .

Destiny with option parts is expensive. I mean think about it, 6,480Yen for option parts means destiny is 22,000 which is WTF? As Heine is 19,500 or so?

Gunpla Builders Australia Challenge #10 HG 1/144 Gundam Barbatos �Strike Valkyrie Armour�

Upon activating the Barbatos near an asteroid belt, the Tekkadan crew received a weird signal and went to investigate. There they found a mysteries artefact, one of the legendary artefact of the gods, The Valkyrie. Legend state that whomever in possession of it will command the power of lightning � and so the Strike Valkyrie Armour was born.

This is the first time I worked, paint and custom a 1/44 kit. The thing is tiny �lol
My main theme and inspiration is from the Valkyrie profile game, and wanted to give Barbatos an armour that more like the knights of old.
My main purpose of this build was to play with the styrene sheet and create the armour from that. This competition was the perfect time to develop, learn and try to play with the plates in which it was great fun for me � So all the armour was custom made and cut � and the back pack was salvage from an RG strike freedom
The paint I used are Alclad Chrome , polished brass , pale gold , gloss back base , aluminium , copper , transparent yellow , transparent blue , Tamiya White ,skyblue , flat blue and red
Chrome is very hard to photograph and the kit is so small as well �.. So I hope the photo aren't too bad� I also need a good camera too �

Damn right, I'm jealous but if i could paint like this I would be even more excited about the upcoming RE100 Efreet. It and the mg freedom 2.0 are up for preorder on hlj, and something about the efreet I really like, if i could paint those dual swords half as good as these...

Also yeah, havent got pics yet but I finished my first painted build almost a month ago and have hardly looked at gundam since. I enjoyed it all but didnt end up doing all that I wanted. I bought an mg sword/launcher strike to go with aile strike rm to make perfect strike, so with the spare old strike I painted it up in real type colours. When I got a 3p skygrasper that came with an aile pack too I was going to paint one pack in the same grey scheme as the g-armour, but gave up on that for now.

My figuring is that the original rx-78-2 real type was just from a computer simulation prototyping? So with Morgenraete(?) being so tech savvy why couldn't they do the same, plus it helps that the old strike model isnt quite as refined as the RM version. My only problem with the finished product (besides the wind blowing over my drying stand outside after a top coat and it sliding across concrete, but hey, free battle damage/wear), was that I followed the colour guide and the midnight blue just doesnt seem dark enough compared to everything I've seen, and next to the green.

Anyway will post some pics of my shoddy strike this afternoon, and in the mean time I've been bitten by the astray bug, am planning on filling 1 shelf with them, including 2-3 customs i have planned.

Im thinking of getting a second kit myself and some styrene just so I build the pre upgrade version.... I love the Barbatos myself, I've built the 1/100 model, my only gripe with the model was the shoulders, I had to modify them so they would stay in the joint..every time I moved the joint the shoulders they would pull out way too easily ....their not coming out any time soon now

So I haven't gotten aroun to photos of my crappy strike (or make toys wrestle with all the other mp cars), but i'm starting my 2 sort of custom ashtrays. I bought a 3rd party cheap accessory that I'd been looking at, I'd seen it all molded in black plastic but I found another one with a couple extra peices and bought it instead, without realizing (until I opened it yesterday), that this version is actually resin.

I've never worked with resin so just wondering if there's anything I need to know? Different primer or anything? Cheers.

Just got my metal build Red frame today...!!...
Man i was really underwhelmed by this figure.... the armour on him is gloss white plastic.... not even painted :( like the rest of the exia metal build.... he looks quiet cheap ... i dont have a MG to compare to but the detail on him seem very lacking.... im pretty knowledgeable about the detail on a red frame as i have build an PG version RG and it is one of my favourite gundam.... so im very disappointed on this metal build....
my V fin doesnt fit in properly as that is painted( one of the only things !! lol ) so i had to scrap it to make it fit....
I also got the back pack... at least that thing is awesome!! highly detail and painted !! with so many moving parts .....so when the accessory is better then the figure ... that really telling you something

I am skipping that figure as it really didn't catch me at all, if they follow TT approach I be stopping MB collecting, and the Destiny better NOT be such quality we all paid quite a lot of it.

Not sure you want to buy blue frame now, but it is an honest review from both of us. Is very bad for a MB standard.

I am actually tempted to just sell mine off. Not sure why they couldn't stay with what they display on the box though. I feel like I am being cheated.
The box Red frame is grey white but we all get plastic pure white.

Is not only that, the samurai sword holder printing look bad. I am unsure who is the one doing QC for this but is horrible. miles apart from gold frame Astray.

I took out my Astray and played with it.

The toy, feels good.
The painting/finishing is bad, is not Box accurate in fact is False advertising from Bandai.

Why? you may ask.
1. Compare the box , the figure is under grey white lighting hence it does not look anywhere near pure white at all, and shockingly every picture isn't a true representation of the toy.

2. The red on his waist are not metallic red as shown on the box. Again, either this is Photoshop or they didn't paint the toy.

3. Fingers are not metallic red , if you have the golden astray you can see where he stands out.

4. The sword holder is also not painted metallic red. Again from the box, it is painted.

Do I feel cheated? Yes unfortunately, especially at this price.

The red antenna keeps dropping off as well which I find it a bummer.

I did the exact same pose as the box, and I am not feeling it.

Is not a bad toy though, but I think something is wrong and I am surprised Bandai let this passed.

Oh and yes, I have tried complaining to Tamashii shop Japan. I doubt anything is going to happen but what the heck.

Painfully the prototype looks way better than the final product but I am quite pissed that the box toy isn't a true representation of what is inside.

They only recently release true pics on Tamashii web to probably cover their arse, but this is bad.

Even if I could forgive the white pieces , its lacking the metallic red pieces as shown on the box. That alone would have saved the toy.

Sorry to hear its not turned out so great, makes me kind of ok that I decided to make an mg red frame instead :-( (p bandai red frame and 3P flight pack. Was going to use the lowe guile red frame but have another idea for it). Speaking of p-bandai :

Latest 2 p bandai kits announced, geara doga unicorn version and zeta plus unicorn version. Granted they have some new moulding (doga wrist cuffs, zeta head). Cant complain too much though as I still want the p bandai geara doga full frontal because i like the colour and gun... always thought about getting the zeta test type because its cheap and always in stock, but its an older kit.

My first custom astray is primed, but weather (among other things) have gotten in the way, but I've thrown together mg rx-78-2 3.0, mg exia dark matter, NG 1/100 chaos and over flag. Edit - and struggled to episode 42 of 0079. After that I'll watch IBO.

I do think that the blue frame looks way more appealing due to weapons, though is the same white as Red astray.

My only fear is they add the second revised as an option part to this piece.

I take a deep breath and get this and leave it sealed till I get confirmation and decide what I want to do with it.

I got stitched up for trying to help. So I got refunded the amount I paid for Gundam Heine Destiny MB but only to be charged 840yen by Paypal for an item that didn't exist. This is seriously wtf and why I hate Paypal sometimes.

Meaning, I paid $15 for nothing!

I am escalating it as a dispute on Paypal and explained that the merchant has money transferred rather than actually action a refund from the actual transaction which resulted to this issue. Hopefully it will be resolved.

Still waiting on new Metal build news. If Blue astray comes in full weapons set, I may bite it, otherwise I may skip it in the end. There is also another Red frame suilt like a diver's unit not featured yet. Looks awkward for me as I would rather just display red frame with the flight unit.

.... bandai better step up their game as the red frame was a piece of shit compare to this guy.... it so heavy from all the meatl used! ... even the massive sword and knife is metal... build in led.... and it 1/72 ... so it massive and look at the detail paint work... actually paint ! I actually woundn't have mind paying MORE to begin with but to just stuff us around and cancelling our orders leaving us in limbo was what actually ticked me off. Like in this case you decided to go MG.

I am looking what I can spend with my remaining credits with them and would stop going to NY as my first choice for toys.

i recommend collectorsdrift as he a forum member here and a local sydney based company...:) im convinced him to do this 3p gundam lines so the more order the better ... as the MoShow strike was one of the best figure i got ... it really that good ...

if you need any help at all just ask .... also just be aware some of the older kit are pretty bad ... but most of the new ones out now are excellent without having to do anything to the kit to make it look good straight snap fit from the box...but the fun start when you put alittle more effect into it and start panel lining ,painting and eventually customising it ..... so enjoy

I didn't miss Gundam but I am pissed off with bandai screwing their fans over a pre order. I mean seriously if I were to try and pre order both Macross and Gundam you going to be screwed real bad.

I basically saw Macross sold out in 3 seconds and metal build couldn't add to my cart. Even hlj with 1 per customer limit didn't help.

I don't get it, is a pre order, why can't they make to order?

Yeah, I agree. The Arcadia way makes for more sense and profit- give them a timeframe to lock it all in- produce X amount more than the orders that stores send in by set time and make big bucks.

Such a hassle- missed out on the Astray and I'm not even sure I've got the VF-31! :(

Yeah I totally get what you're saying- was shouting at the screen in frustration too :D

Not even sure I have it because of all the stories I hear about either the dreaded purge e-mail or the last minute disappointment where they realise you're one of those that didn't make the cut on the day they're shipping them out.

HLJ normally really good- I blame Bandai to be honest.

I just hope NY can start their slightly higher priced ones so that I can grab a guarantee.

Judt kidding, my skills have a long way to go to warrant an interstate trip but congrats on the win! Will have to look for more pics cos gundamguy.blogspot only shows 2, interested in seeing side view.

As for my works, I'm in limbo after selling my house and duing selling/contract I didnt get to do anything so as to not make a mess, at the moment all I've been able to do is the frame for 1/100 barbatos 6th form, been mucking around just colouring pistons and stuff with gold, silver, bronze sharpies. My plan is to get the first barbatos and give the 6th form its weapons, then do the frame mod and make both versions of the gusion.

Wont be painting until I buy another place, but if we decide to get one built it will be > 4 months and might have to work a space out somewhere to do it.

The quality is quite good for its price. I put it this way, you won't be pissed off like the red frame was for the amount you paid.

I broke one of his holding hands but can be glued as I think it wasn't glued properly.

Significant difference was the intakes and antenna were gold instead of yellow

The quality is good enough to impress me to consider the red version.

Air brushes use iwata brand I would use one with more control as oppose to less if using gravity feed.

However I have preferred to use suction airbrushes aa I am more comfortable with them.

Absolutely not. Ka are all in the fix line unfortunately.

It may be a good thing though since the Gundam are based on katoki work anyway. Is just speculation and it could go blood orphan line which I would be happy as well.

Is this compressor (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1-6HP-Air-Compressor-for-Spray-Gun-Air-Brush-AS-186-/260985916715?hash=item3cc3f90d2b:g:LX0AAOSw-vlVhnAv) enough for the job? paired with either iwata hp.cn or better options. Im planning to paint metallic colors on my MG sazabi

I didnt know there's an airbrush store in adelaide other than https://www.amcsupplies.com.au although their parts are a bit expensive than nsw ebay counterparts

Friend of mine uses something like this

It has the limit control

If you never have used an airbrush, I would suggest try a few cheaper ones as well as I never got used to gravity feed airbrushes and prefer Suction method with the glass bottle below.

Why?
Because I can tell the paint is running out before it starts splatter when runs out.
I can easily change and clean on the fly.
I feel quite in control with it.

you got some good point with siphon type but am i going to need higher PSI than gravity type? Anyway there's an ongoing 15% off happening in EBAY.AU so need to go shopping soon.

Nope that compressor can handle both types, you may need the correct hose adaptor for the hose .

Absolutely not. Ka are all in the fix line unfortunately.

It may be a good thing though since the Gundam are based on katoki work anyway. Is just speculation and it could go blood orphan line which I would be happy as well.

Well katoki had dedicated to metal fix line but I haven't seen a bad metal build design only poor finish on red frame and probably the same with blue. We have to wait and see what's all the commotion is about .

Edit metal build f-91 announced. Now it's seriously small if 1/100? Wtf

Btw I was told that the original seven sword is pretty loose at joints while the Ko has been massively improved. I am Definately getting their red seven sword now. If you didn't have OO raiser, they are up for Po as well. Face it, you be pay over 1k just for the original is a bit crazy.
