Finally finished the 1/100 Kotobukiya Metal Gear Rex Kit

It looks really nice and on point with the source material, the engineering of the parts and how everything goes together is pretty well done.

However the plastic to me just doesn't feels as good/strong as the modern Bandai counterparts

For me it was worst as two of the internal joint pieces broke, it didn't snap it didn't bend, it literally crumbled like a cookie when i was handling those piece while trying to install them .

overall its still very nice kit and great representation of Metal Gear Rex

just looking at that last picture, do you have a 'carpet' floor inside the car!!??

They're pre-cut card mats from a detail set. If the interior is more visible I would cover it with flocking powder to make it look like carpet.

Yeah I didn't pin them because I thought it wouldn't be a problem. Though if the arms didn't let go then I'd probably have all the fingers broken. I'll try the sms stuff, see if it's ok with resin.

A very small Star Destroyer kit from Bandai - sits on top of my work monitor. Used a bit of black panel wash to bring out the detail

My first attempt at gunpla. 1/144 GX-9901-DX Gundam Double X. I don't even know the show, I just bought the kit when I was in Hong Kong just because it was the thing to do :) Spray painted white with panel detail, all other colours I just put a bit of flat coat on. Sadly one wing panel is broken as the hinge was too big and ended up snapping when I tried to open the panel :(

Tricky, as you tend to get what you pay for. And that is an inexpensive compressor...

I would however recommend getting a compressor with an air tank, as that helps keep the airflow constant.

Bought a cheap model kit to test out a painting technique I read about online to achieve a real life car paint effect. Turned out pretty well in the end, although I learned some other valuable lessons along the way with building this kit, including:
- solvent glues should not be used on all parts, especially clear plastic
- don't use painters tape, especially over decals.
- don't rush stages, ensure that the glue is completely dry before moving onto the next stage involving those pieces.

Anyway, I was pretty happy with the way the paintwork on the body turned out. The intention is to use the technique on the Optimus Prime voice-changer helmet. Also looking at making light-up eyes. Haven't commenced yet but have bought the parts. Once it's complete I will post progress pics.

In the meantime, here is my model building effort - nowhere near as good as others on here, but hopefully fun to look at regardless...

Is the entire droid 3D printed or just the top? I can see what you mean about the print lines but they are very faint. Was it an extruded print or a fused powder process?

Cheers. The head is the only printed part. The body is from the Bandai R5-D4 kit so I need to cast the sensor eye bits and surrounds. I had it printed at Shapeways in frosted ultra detail which I assume is resin cured by laser, layer by layer. The tolerances are excellent and fit is extremely good so if the drawing is accurate then so is the model I've found. I might tweak it a bit and have it printed in extreme detail for version 2.

Also I never realised you could get cement/glue like that with a brush. I always was fiddling around with tubes and those Revell ones that had the thin long metal nozzle. Glue always got dried up in those.

This may be a stupid question, but why does he not put glue under pieces to hold them together? He basically puts them together and gives them a wipe with the brush around the join.

Wouldn't that leave a glue ridge around the join and possibly not hold them together if it flexes a tiny bit?

Yeah that guy's pretty good though he doesn't add any commentary to his videos. I prefer this guy (https://www.youtube.com/user/idaemon) because of this.

As for the glue it flows in with capillary action and the solvent fuses the styrene together leaving a neat join.

Also finished the Airfix 1/48th Mk.1 Spitfire. Pretty straight forward and enjoyable build with no real problems other than through a bit of carelessness. There's a bit of overspray on the instrument panel if you look hard enough. I used the very nice Eduard interior detail set.

Yeah it's the scout and speeder bike kit. I got it off ebay though I found that tokyomodeldetective (http://www.tokyomodeldetective.com/) is cheaper. The only quirk though is that you have to supply your shipping preference in the "notes" section so you get a separate invoice for it.

Finished last 2 for the year. Tomcat was a nice easy build with no problems. Huracan was an exercise in patience. Colour is Verde ermes. Aoshima pick nice subjects but their execution leaves a lot to be desired.

Finished a figure kit with some modifying. Kit was nicely cast and easy to put together but really needed a strong degreaser to get rid of the mould release.

Thanks. For the skin I used the new Mr Color Lascivus (http://www.mr-hobby.com/en/itemDetail.php?iId=2880) range of paints. For anime style figures it's great though I'm still not sure about realistic skin.
