Why can't Norman Osborn just die?
You're asking that about a character from Marvel?
The same company that comes up with the convulted plot that Steve Rogers isn't dead, he's just doing a Quantum Leap through his life? :p

Really look for the trades. I can't recommend those series enough. I had my doubts at the start given Marvel's track record with cosmic stuff but it's been nothing short of brilliant. My favourite series to date and one of the few on my pulllist. I used to read close to 40 comics a month (about 2 months ago actually) but now i'm down to 14 and converting to trade for the most part but Nova/Guardians of the Galaxy/War of Kings are all still on my pull list.
EDIT:
Cheap lot: (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Annihilation-comic-lot-65-issues-Marvel-Nova-Quasar_W0QQitemZ350227515329QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_ Books_Comics?hash=item518b2fc7c1&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262&_trkparms=%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A30)
The HCs of this cost ~$50 each, there were 3 for the 1st Annhilation series which would cost u at least $150. Then the 2nd lot of Annhilation (Conquest) HCs there were two which would be another $100. That's excluding the issues of Nova you also get which would be around $90 for three trades collecting those issues.
So yeap, a definite bargain.

I don't buy any comics these days, reading my Marvel stuff in the trades these days, but sometimes pick up some of the first issues of big events.
But I was in Classic Comics today to get some short boxes and I picked up the Necrosha X one shot to get an idea of that crossover.
I thought it was a pretty good comic, much better than the Messiah Complex or Skrull Invasion crossovers.
Part of me hates all the long dead characters being resurrected (and the rip off of DCs similiar storyline). But part of me likes that this series is remembering past continuity and characters and villains otherwise forgotten.

For those with Iphones, I found a new Marvel Comics app today which is basically allows you to purchase and read Marvel comics similar to the Comixology viewer.
You can download 11 free comics including Amazing Spiderman #546, Astonishing X-men #1, Captain America #1, FF #570 and more.
Not bad but can't wait when an Ipad hits our shores, then I'll be into virtual comics more.

I've often been quite vocal about how I've always been a Marvel fan and never DC as I see DC as more the 'caped' heroes that aren't as human and vulnerable as Marvel characters. Sure I love Batman and Superman movies but have never been drawn to the comics, but DAMMIT Geoff Johns! You've brought me in! Not all the way, just in to Green Lantern.
I read 'Rebirth' and 'Sinestro Corps War' a while back and got absolutely hooked, and last night I finished 'Blackest Night'. Just. Wow.
For a long-time Marvel devotee to name his new car 'Hal Jordan', that's saying something.

From Free Comic Book Day, I got Iron Man/Thor, and War of the Supermen.
Iron Man/Thor was a funny little oneshot. It reminds me of some old comics annuals I have, in that it's a short adventure that probably won't affect anything.
War of the Supermen was actually two stories, both prologues to a main series of the same title. It was very different in tone from Iron Man/Thor, which was much more light hearted, at least to me.

I've never read Y Last Man at all though have had several people recommend it highly so it may be something I pursue..... I had been 'out' of comics for a few years and have recently gotten the bug again.
I have recently read the first 3 trades of Invincible by Image, I really enjoyed those.
Have also been reading a tonne of X factor, I usually enjoy it a hell of a lot.
Also collecting Wolverine (though as I collected his stuff since I was 12 I am sort of over him now, especially how Marvel puts him into everything these days), The Tick, Red Robin, Hawkeye & Mockingbird (thinking of dropping it though).
Half way through the trade of JSA: Return of Hawkman.... not liking it a lot just yet but maybe will get better when Hawkman actually returns lol

Y The Last Man is fantastic. Also, if anyone hasn't read Brian K Vaughn's run on Runaways, they're missing out. Maybe I just like a good, simple concept, but the whole everyone-thinks-their-parents-are-evil-sometimes,-but-what-if-your-parents-actually-were-supervillains is brilliant.

I was out of the loop with the whole dark reign stuff, marvel changed a hell of a lot in the 3 -4 years I stopped collecting, in all honesty apart from x factor they have pretty much lost me as a customer these days, I used to by most of my titles from them.
Glad to hear you enjoyed punisher/daken though (can't stand Daken myself).

Punisher has been epic over the past 2 years, great stories and art, and more to come.

The 10 or 11 tpb's of Punisher Max by Garth Ennis is the finest storytelling EVER published by Marvel. This is not an opinion but hard fact.
Another great series I've finished recently is 'Lucifer' by DC/Vertigo. Follows on as a nice spin-off from the acclaimed 'Sandman' series by Neil Gaiman.

I used to be a massive fan of WildCATS comics and have a few figures too, was thinking of getting back on board with them but I think their next issue is their last (issue 30 I think). If DC starts them over I would be keen on that.

This Punisher is something special. Extremely violent, hardcore, yet in a way realistic, storyline. There's a plot running through nearly the entire run as well as the individual focus of each trade. It is truly an epic series.

Wow! That was an interesting article. So typical of a giant corporation shooting themselves in the foot while screwing up the brilliance of individual creators.
Paul Levitz sounds like a right douchebag...
cause Paul Levitz to personally intervene, changing dialogue and finished art because they offended his sensibilities
Oh sorry bitch! We didn't realise cutting edge, brilliant writing would offend your delicate sensibilities.
However conflict, especially over V For Vendetta and League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen with Paul Levitz would see him leave....Moore would not write for DC or Wildstorm again.
Nice one Pauly. Lose the most acclaimed author in the entire history of comic books because you presided over the raping of his creations into Hollywood diarrhea. Good one, dude.
Paul Levitz so violently reacted to this series on publication, despite sales that started at 60,000 and rose, that the series was cancelled and Dynamite picked it up.
O.M.F.G! 'The Boys' is comic books at their satirical and violent best.
Paul Levitz...somebody needs to put you down and put you down hard. You have lost for your company Mark Millar (Kick Ass, The Authority, The Ultimates), Alan Moore (Watchmen, Swamp Thing, From Hell, V for Vendetta)
Garth Ennis (Preacher, Hellblazer, The Boys, Punisher)

The grape scene. That's where it hits.
It was particularly hard for me because I'd read the entire series over the course of a couple of days, so everything was still fresh in my mind. You travel with the characters (and in this case a pivotal character), you become a part of their group, so when something happens you feel it's happened to a close friend. Vaughn did an excellent job with the character development and building this sense of vicarious osmosis. He's a truly phenomenal writer.

Paulbot, what're your thoughts about Buffy Season 8? The 'super' powers?
My gf reads it, and I flick through the occasional issue, but found the characters not really relfecting who they really are.
Like Willow swearing, things like that. Now a lot of people say the show obivously had parametres in place, so now being in a comic they can, well I strongly disagree, as those 'parametres' are what I believe truly defined the characters.

Buffy the comic doesn't compare that well with Buffy the TV series. There's only two more books of this "season" so I want to see how it ends up, and then re-read it all. As I read when the Trades come out I've not got to see the "super" powers be explored yet.

I'm having more time these days and am getting back into actively consuming issues rather than have them accumulating dust.
Some news here that is not new but I don't think anyone's paying attention to:
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=28466
Known fact for a long time now but the rapid attrition of titles is a feature these days that I'm not sure how the large companies will retain in the long run.
Have any of you read comics on the ipad? Incredible experience. Can't recommend it enough. It's also really sparked a lot of my interest again back into comics. I got the ipad mainly for books originally. Save money and no storage space. But the same principle has come to apply to comics and the comixology apps are amazing in the way they offer a brand new reading experience. I've re-read comics I've owned and read many times and I still can't help but marvel at the quality of the experience. The only thing that doesn't have the same punch at times is the massive double splashes. But even that's easily compensated by the new way you consume the comics. Not to mention its cheaper. Perhaps this is contributing to the decline in the direct market. But given it's relative new-ness, I don't think so.
That's not to say I won't by print but definitely am only going to buy HCs or premium formats for my favourite comics now. No longer will I accumulate a whole of physical comics I have to go to the trouble of storing unless its the best stuff I must have.
Courtesy of the ipad, my current favourite series is Y the Last Man. I'm reading each issue as it gets released in the DC store. Though I have to admit I've had to resist the temptation of just going and buying the darn hardcovers and reading the whole story in one go. But I'm trying to restrain myself b/c this is the first time in a long time that I'm waitng and waiting for every single issue to come out. That's a feeling I've long forgotten; that excitement on release day. It's great to feel it again every Wednesday.
Which pales to a lot of others stuff that I get from my LCS which just accumulates and then I pick up every few months.
But yes, Y the Last Man is so far a great series. Will chase it down in HC too eventually but will read it first in single issue format.
What else I'm reading:
- Green Lantern
- Green Lantern Corps
- Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors
- Birds of Prey
- Captain America
- Secret Six
- Transformers: Drift
... whoa! I just realised how heavily DC skewed that is. I grew up on Marvel but geez have things changed. I still get the Marvel HCs, mind you, but I also do that for the above (or TPB form) when it's released.

I too bought an iPad for the purpose of comic books. I never wanted one, but when I bought one for my girlfriend and actually saw the potential of it, I couldn't resist. Sure I use it for other things like social networking and playing 'Monkey Island', but the comics, that's where it's at.
I use Comixology and the Marvel, DC and Transformers apps, but Comixology pretty much makes the other three redundant. And I'm not going to lie, I also use ComicZeal with the comics I've required through other means.
I was always 'only' a Marvel Ultimate and Transformers reader, then I started reading 'Invincible' and 'Fables', but it was Geoff Johns that got me reading DC with 'Green Lantern'. That was the catalyst because after that I got the iPad and I'm now reading books I never thought I'd give a go or would have otherwise not even known about. It's also helping me keep on top of all the books I'd normally wait months for trades, because I don't buy single issues. Even though in a few months I'll pick up the 'Rose Red' trade of 'Fables' to add to the bookcase, I'm reading it right now without having to deal with ads on every second page and a stack of issues taking up room that I do not have. I'd also given up on Marvel after the Ultimate line finished and did not continue to the new series' for because for a number of reasons, but now I'm giving it a go again.
One of the other major problems for me is there's no comic store on the Sunshine Coast, and despite there being a fair few in Brisbane, I still deal with my friend who owns the store in Toowoomba. Given how rarely I get to Toowoomba these days, we've always worked on a system where he orders in all the books I want, over time (months on months) I pay him off, then when I'm there next I have a haul waiting for me. I'm still doing that to a smaller extent, but now I can read new issues every Wednesday/Thursday like everyone else.
This is what I've got on the iPad right now:
- The Authority
- Batman (Hush and Dark Knight Returns)
- Chew
- Fables
- Green Lantern (also Corps, Emerald Warriors, Brightest Day)
- Haunt
- Invinicible (and all the spin off mini series')
- Jack of Fables
- Kick-Ass
- Kingdom Come
- Locke & Key
- Nemesis
- Powers
- Scott Pilgrim
- Superman-Batman
- Tech Jacket
- The Flash
- The Amory Wars
- The Walking Dead
- Transformers
- Ultimate comics
- Y-The Last Man

Wolverine

Red Robin
Hawkeye & Mockingbird
I am going to drop Hawkeye though, just not doing it for me and thinking of doing the same with Wolverine even though that title started off my collecting when I was 12, I think even I can get too much of Logan lol.
Over the weekend I re-read a lot of Wildcats as I was feeling nostalgic and dissapointed about the news re wildstorm. Sure that early Jim Lee wildcats stuff is very heavily inspired by the Xmen but it was really good stuff, I have the mini series and issues 1 -34 as well as a lot of spin off stuff and variant covers, I loved it so much that I will be tracking down trades of the stuff I don't have, mostly Wildcats 3.0 and the new series.

Read FrankenCastle issue 21, and you will learn more.
Marvel Universe VS The Punisher is fantastic.

you read deadpool - wade willsons war? domino wasn't too bad in that....

X-23 is an all time fav of mine, love her :D
Really dug the new X-Force, it was good seeing the x-men spill some blood.
I only read Daniel Ways Deadpool (and previoulsy Cabel & Deadpool) each other writer just doesnt seem to capture the essesnce of who wade is, and the human touches he places on the character I believe are amazing.
Like in the recent issue with Ghost Rider, after the Penance stare is done to Wade, he asks Johnny
"Do you believe I should die?'
"Based on what I know of you: Yeah!'
And with a beautiful gazing stare into the distance, simply replies with:
'Thanks man.'
Do plan on getting Deadpool Pulp and Deadpool Max!
Yeah Domino is like She-Hulk, all of a sudden have become trashy as and sleeping with a whole bunch of people.
Lol Im pretty sure there is a line in the M.U. for girls that wanna sleep with Logan, he has that whole animal attraction, powers of seduction thing going on.

cable deadpool was good but wasn't as good as the original but the new ongoing is getting back on track.
i'm a bit pissed off because i collect any appearance of deadpool......and since hes big again hes in everybook and has 4 minis plus the occasional one shot. the bastards at marvel sure know how to sell units.....

The current ongoing is a bit hit or miss.
I like Wade Wilson's War until the very end.
Given up on Team-Up. Didn't even bother with Corps.
I think the problem with Deadpool at the moment is no one really knows how to "write" him. Writers tend to forget that he's also a deadly mercenary and not just the butt of all jokes/meta/fourth wall breaking clown he's made out to be now.
But I have to admit I look forward to him being in the new Uncanny X-Force.

Walking Dead is Awesome! Robert Kirkman has to be my favourite writer at the moment. I don't have any of the Walking dead trades yet but have read some and it is on my to get list.

one of the things i have tired with marvel.. is the constant event stories
from civil war -> secret invasion -> Siege -> whatever is happening next,
it was all too much to handle and there was no real development of the individual character titles cap was the shining title Iron Man was great Thor too... but alot of the others were dullish and needed the event title books to make sense of.
The amount of Deadpool books is a joke itself
and the absoulte butchering of The Punsiher is absurd..... good to see him popping up in shadowland normally...
i myself recently had a MASSIVE cull of my titles chopping almost 25 books off my list from Hulk to some Avenger titles transformers didnt get the chop yet, probably in the vain hope it will get better and we get some good stories...
i wonder if we will se a drop in the comic prices......

Nothing is happening next with Marvel. Seige and Heroic Age were the goal (hoepfully)
Would you have preffered Frank remain dead and sliced up into peices at the bottom of an alley?
For what he had his sights on, Osborn and The Hood (a little too much for even The Punisher), it really couldnt have gone any other way.
Remender knew what he was doing, and did it quite well, even if you only read issue 21, you will understand....
He had his family ressurected only to have to incenerate and kill them himself!
they were not bastardised versions either, they were the real deal.
Frank lost it, thought too big, and died as a consequence. Absloute fun seeing him run around with a bunch of Super Hero tech, the way he used Pym Particles, amazing!!

Ouch! That's a lotta dough! I still remember when I used to spend that much. My standing orders gone down to about 8 comics now. It used to be more in the vicinity of 40 to 50+ per month. Instead, I'm finding my preferred means is the ipad and trades now. The ipad doesn't release the new stuff and even if it does is delayed, yes, but it's really got me to revisit some old favourites I haven't read in awhile. Not to mention, it's also cheaper and I don't have to worry about storage.
Some recent highlights (old and new):
- Green Lantern (always a winner!)
- Annihilation
- Thor: Son of Asgard
- Dark Knight Returns
- Rising Stars
- Sleeper: Season One (brilliant!)
- Irredeemable - amazing book in terms of character and exploration of the superhero dynamic
- Codebreakers
- Action Philosophers - funny as hell, yet insightful. Cleverly written.
- BatmanL Year One
- Thor (2007 series) #1-12
- Immortal Ironfist

Just finished Hack/Slash Annual 2, no SGs this time :(
Seeley is doing great things with this over at Image, had a few worries it may somehow be censored, not at all I am happy to say.
Will have to check out his Marvel mini-series Wasp/Antman
The relationship with Vlad and Cassie has evolved into them being 'one minded' in a sense. The last few issues with DDP, seemed the 2 characters had drifted apart.
And Jethro Morales art is fan-fkn-tastic!! As much as I like Daniel Leister, they should consider having Morales take over for the on-going.

Hey guys I need some help and this seemed as good-a place as any. :o
Back in the early 90's, around 92-3 I think, my brother and I found a section in our local video store that we'd never noticed before.
Now to he and I this was a truly hidden gem as this section contained all these cool looking cartoons that didn't appear to be what we'd normally see on TV, the M15+ ratings sticker may of been an indication. :p
Such titles were Bubblegum Crisis, Appleseed, Akira, Devilman... But the one that took both my and my brothers attention completely, as we were 7 and 5 respectively, was this 12 part series called... Guyver: Bio Boosted Armour. :D
We later found out that these shows were of Japanese origin and were called Anime, which were based of Japanese comics called Manga.:)
Fast forward 18 years and I have just finished watching the (2005) 26 episodes of the Guyver Anime and would really like to know what happens next.
As I am aware that the story continues far past where the Anime ends, I want to try and acquire, if they still exist, the Manga that the show is based off. :D
Now, I'm no idiot and I'm aware that the Manga would be natively in Japanese but I've been lead to believe that English translated copies exist and I was wondering if anyone here would be able to help me out? ;)
If anyone could bring me up to speed and/or point me in the right direction it would truly be appreciated as this series got me hooked on Japanese adult cartoons as a kid and I've loved the Guyver story and Anime ever since that first OVA way back when. :D:D:D

I'll help you here cos I have read Guyver since it first came out waaaaaay back.
To memory, there was a TV series... then a out-of-continuity movie and then a second series that was just a newer, better looking version of the first. It never covered the story up to the Manga cos the Manga STILL... HASN'T... FINISHED!!!!! The writer did mention that there was a higher chance of him dying before Guyver ended... -_-;
Anyway, Kronos takes over the world... Guyver 3, Agito, starts a Gorilla Resistance to retake the planet. However, heaps of people have gone through the Zoanoid conversion. So, basically, its 'what if the Secret Invasion succeeded'.
Sho has gone missing so Tetsuro and Mizuki are trying to stay hidden cos they are targeted by Kronos. Sho finally returns from being disintegrated thanx to the Control Metal and merges the Control Metal with a 'Creator' ship, creating the Guyver Gigantic which both Agito and Sho can use but its only one unit.
Agito has greater willpower and so 'steals' the Gigantic from Sho when both need to summon its power.
Within Kronos, three of the Zoalords rebel against Archanfel and kill two of the members loyal to him and then blame the Guyvers for that action.
They then battle try to capture Guyver 1 when he and an assistant of a professor that helped the Guyvers before the invasion try to save Aptom who had become a 'kinda' ally to them. It is here that we find out that Sho has been pretending to lose control of the Gigantic armour to Agito so as to give the view that he is still as weak as he was before the whole Kronos invasion. He has also become a bit of a tactician, pretending to be defeated, then transforms into Guyver and then Gigantic to kill a whole heap of Zoanoids.
Now, its an invasion of the Kronos empire by the Guyvers and it kinda enters limbo there... very irritating. Its like one volume of manga a year and a bit on average at the moment.
Hope that helped.

Cheers Gekisou, :)
Thank you for bringing me up to speed with what has transpired since Sho acquired the Gigantic ability and defeating Neo ZX-Tol. :D
Indeed, there was an OVA produced in '86 called 'Guyver: Out of Control' which didn't follow the Manga particularly well but was followed up in '89 or '90 with a 12 part OVA series which covered only so far as the fall of Kronos Japan.
This series helped to spark a wave of interest in Japanese Anime in the US though, which led to the Live Action Abortions that were the 2 US Guyver movies (Even having Mark Hamil in the 1st?) then everything started to die down a little until DBZ hit the States and a second wave of interest began which lead to the creation of the 2005 Updated 26 episode Guyver Anime series - which ended with Kronos taking over the world, Ogito leading the rag-tag resistance force, Aptom looking over the Segawa siblings and Sho acquiring the Gigantic ability after having raising the Relic Creator Ship out of Mt. Minakami. ;)
I'm glad there is at least 1 other fan of the series here, as I know that it indeed has been running for quite some time - Manga-wise it's been produced since '84 hasn't it?, but this series is so full of Awesome-sauce it's often made me look at Western comics and cartoons and think: 'Man, Japan has Ghost in The Shell and we've got what?... The X-Men '90s series? :('.
At least Transformers was a meeting of both cultures. ;):)
Do you know where one might be able to acquire any English translated versions of the Manga?

Sorry man... I read the original Japanese manga so I don't know where to get English Translations. I do know they exist cos I've seen them in passing at my local comic shop so you may want to try yours.
The 2005 anime isn't bad and I quite enjoyed it. And yes, you are right, the first US Guyver movie had Mark Hamill in it. It was bad but I loved the 2nd one cos it was closer to the book and the fight scenes were 200 shades of awesome!!!
A friend of mine in Singapore is an even bigger fan of Guyver than I am, he has ALL the action figures that got released a few years ago. :)
Sounds like I wasn't actually that much help, you seem pretty updated yourself.

Not a problem at all Gekisou, a reply is welcome enough but yeah, indeed they do exist but unfortunately it looks like I'll have to travel to Sydney in order to find any as the Illawarra's retail variety is pitiful at best. :(
I was a little confused when they changed Mizuki's hair colour for the 2005 version, as well as the difference in the pronunciation of their names but I figured that the 2005 version was just trying to follow it's roots a little bit more closely. ;)
The Mark Hamil film was 'A Dark Hero' yeah? - I know I've seen that one, ages ago :p, but I can't remember if I've seen the sequel... I'll have to see if I can find it.
Your friend sounds to be quite a fan indeed, especially if he has all the figures as they fetch a considerable price tag. I myself would love to acquire figures of Units 1-3, maybe a Gregole if I can track one down but the price tag of $100AUD is a little disappointing. :o
Not at all, as I said I'm just glad there is another fan on the boards and you did help with the event post the 2005 Anime.
So they've gone ahead and made her Cannon have they? that's good because she was pretty much the only loose end in regards to continuity if I understand correctly. :)
I might have to ask if any of the Sydney-siders have come across any in their travels, especially if the series is ongoing. ;):D

Mark Hamil was in the Guyver movie?!?!
Who'd he play? weeeiiirrrddddd
He played the FBI Agent in the first movie who gets mutated into a Zoanoid at the end.
And to Hursticon, The first movie was just called Guyver, its the second one that is called Dark Hero.
Yes, the 2005 anime is a lot closer to the manga actually though hair colour really only came from the covers as there is no colour in the manga itself. In fact, I think Gigantic isn't that colour accurate in the 2005 version...
The female Guyver was never a continuity issue. They had her replace the original Kronos agent who became Guyver 2 in the movie and really the only reason was so that they could do a nude tentacle rape scene when she becomes the Guyver.
No idea why the writer added her in considering how long ago that movie was...
If you want, I can check out the prices of the manga at my local comic shop but if you do go to Sydney then Kinokuniya is the place you want to be checking out... or King's Comics.

I think I was saying earlier in the thread, I dropped Spidey after OND and BND, so was only reading him in New Avengers and other events.
But yeah, damn, this is what a Spiderman comic should be. And Pete's on top for change, albeit probably not for very long, but I hope they keep up for at least a while.
Not too impressed with the sound of the new villain, Massacre (too Menace-cy) but it does mean we get a new incantation of the Spidey Armour costume, so yay :)

I did buy Vols 1, 11 and 12 of the most recent Japanese reprinting, but I'm very happy to finally be able to get the whole series in English. And hopefully this will pave the way for a rerelease (or redub) of the whole anime on DVD.

I hope someone who frequents this thread can help me. After a long time I pulled out Ultimate Alliance 2 on the weekend and started playing through the story again. All of a sudden I have an overwhelming urge to read the marvel civil war series. Is it in a collection of TPB's? If so then what order do I need to get/read them in? I've surfed the net for a bit and I can't come up with a sold answer to my question so I thought I'd ask someone here who's opinion I can trust.

There's a lot of Civil War trade paperbacks. Lots and lots.
You can read the main story in the Civil War TPB and leave it at that.
All the stories in the other TPBs take place either before, in between chapters, in between pages, inbetween panels! or after the six or seven issues of the series collected in the Civil War TPB.
So I don't think there's any particularly good order to read the story in except to say read the main book first, it has all the important plot points, and then read the tie-ins that might interest you. (Eg there's a big status quo change for Spider-Man about two chapters into the main book, but you need to read the Spider-Man Civil War TPBS to find out how it affects him and his supporting cast).

Yep, start at the Mark Millar/Steve McNiven Civil War series.
Marvel Crossovers (and DC too looking at Darkest Night) tend these day to really be a miniseries that tell the story and the other existing books are just tie-ins. Unlike the old days when you had to read part 1 in book a, part 2 in book b, etc

I run a comic shop, so when I said I try and read everything, I actually did mean everything. :D If you want a list of what I read it's shorter to ask what I don't read. :p
If you want a bit of history then here goes:
I was rasied books, movies, cartoons and comics (like I assume most of you were). I loved Superman & Batman and Uncle Scrooge comics as a child and one of my first memories is watching Superman & Superman 2 at a double feature at the local drive-in when I was 3 years old. Over time I moved away from the simpler (at the time) DC stories and by the time I was in grade 6, I was reading Frank Miller's run on Daredevil. Later that year I discovered the X-Men, specifically Walter & Louise Simonson's run on X-Factor but that lead into my obsession with everything X.
For along time, I read only X-titles, the original run of New Warriors and Captain America, dispite my (not so local) comic book guy's best attempts, to get me reading some of the more hardcore stuff. He used to sneak things like Sin City into my standing order. As it happened, the comic shop I'd been going to for years closed down just as I got my drivers licence. Thus started my semi-regular Melbourne trips, down to hassle the guys at Comics R Us. I was a poor Uni student so my collecting suffered until I graduated and found a "real" job. The quarterly Melbourne trips became monthy and then fortnightly.
Fast froward a few years and I'm being made redundant and the redunancy package is just what I need to start a new business. I managed to convince a long time friend to go halves with me and we've been running ever since. We started out small and still are by all intents and purposes small but we are slowly growing. The past 5 years have flown by so fast, it feels like yesterday we opened the shop with only half the stock we wanted, thanks to a series of unfortunate delivery errors. Not much as changed really. :D
Things to check out at the moment are:
Morning Glories - An awesome little series about a bunch kids going to a not-so-normal high school. And by not normal, I mean The Prisoner meets Lost.
Walking Dead - If you havn't been reading this because it's just a Zombie title, you have no idea what your missing.
Secret Warriors - This one's a bit slow when read month to month but is like a single pebble rolling down a hill that becomes an avalanche. Best read in huge chunks!

Avoid all the Front Line stuff. The Avengers stuff was probably the most interesting compainon story followed probably by the Amazing Spidey arc and if you want a follow up, the Death Of Captain America stuff was widely reguarded as solid.

FrontLine actually aint too bad, for a good street level comic of the events (similar to Seige: Embedded)

I've been tempted by some books in the US but it's still cheaper to buy them frm bookdepository and I don't have to worry about luggage space.
I did get a few comics on Free Comic Book Day: picked up Green Lantern, Spider-man, Thor/Capt America, Mickey Mouse, and Inspector Gadget.
Also the 99c ($1.20 or so in AUD) specials for Marvel Digital Comics have won me over and I now have a large library of Thor comics on my phone to read. The first 17 issues of the current Thor book, and the first 25 issues of the Dan Jurgens/John Romita Jr run in the late 90s. (And I suppose the movie encouraged me to check out the comics too :o )

Front page of the USA Today paper has a promo on a story about the DC relaunch.
Is that the outcome of Flashpoint? Another, somewhat permanent reboot of their characters to earlier younger forms.
This is why I can make the move to DC, the sudden invalidation of decades of stories? Not cool. And I was liking how Morrison had worked on Batman to make all those wacky 60 and 70s stories canon again.

I'm positive about it to some degree.
My only concern is GL as I love it in its present state and would hate to see all that disappear.
But I think overall, this is basically DC's hot at ultimatising their entire universe which I think has merits. Coupled with the digital strategy, I think it's a good strategic move
The comic book industry is dying. Sales numbers of the top books get smaller and smaller by the year. Having a clean slate is the way to go. My question is how do they manage it online with their back issues inventory? It's honestly their biggest stumbling block. How do they create a voice when there's so much immediately competing with it directly in the online store of a smartphone / tablet? These screens aren't optimised for complex browsing of thousands of issues.
I can already see myself giving a fair few titles a go. Teen Titans, Aquaman and the JLA would be all thumbs up for me. And keen to see next week's solicitations too to find out more.

Within the last couple of days I've started to re-ignite my love for the Punisher, so I got all 5 issues of his newest series, 'In the Blood'.
It's a very intense series and returns Punisher back to his roots which I considered a blessing since his last few months/year being an undead freakin' FRANKENSTEIN. Only complaints is that the dialogue seems a off, I don't know if it's just how Americans talk but some of it just sounded out of place and may have needed some revision. Otherwise a good series and a glad return of the real Punisher/Frank Castle.

So far they've all been a big ol case of miss.
And also a tad confusing as some titles seem to be continuing of sorts from the old universe (with slight differences) while other titles are completely different.
For example.
Justice League - Meta-humans are new and feared. The members don't know each other and are just starting to come together.
Justice League International - The JL has been around for ages, meta-humans are the norm.
Action Comics - Superman is new to the scene and not accepted.
Swamp Thing - Superman has been around a while and is accepted! (Swamp Thing clearly continues on from Brightest Day)
The fudge...? What is the continuity in this "new 52"?

I can understand them doing some books as "year one/flashbacks" to tell the new origins, but you'd hope that they would be clear about it. All it would need is a caption on page one "Five years ago..."
It seems like an easy way to confuse people otherwise, rather than the 'easily accessible to new readers' they were going for.

Thunderbolts
Venom

Justice League
Red Lanterns
Swamp Thing
Superman
Wonder Woman
~IDW~
Transformers

but I eventually became interested in DC & Marvel.
Like many comic readers...I'm very excited about
DCs New 52...and while I'm sad to see Power Girl
and Zatanna loose their ongoing series...the new
Swamp Thing & Animal Man titles more than make
up for it.
Speaking of which...did anyone else here Pick up

is set 15 years before the other titles and 10 years
before Justice League #1...I think?

When growing up I struggled to watch Batman: The Animated Series - I was too young, grew up in a household where English was a second language and had trouble understanding any of the themes or the clever dialogue that was being used. Back then I only wanted vivid, colorful action that the series purposely lacked. I only ended up watching bits and pieces of episodes and easily forgot what they were about.
Now, more than a decade later after I've acquired the entire series and am watching the first season and wow, it's such an AMAZINGLY show. I can see why it got its Emmy awards and why so many Batman fans highly recommend it.
And now I'm going to strongly recommend it to other Batman fans who have not seen this series yet too!

Had the opportunity to read Marvel Zombies "Christmas Carol".
Now before I started I was of the mindset that the whole Marvel Zombies thing had been done to death.
But after reading it, I was wrong. While not tied to previous Marvel Zombie stories, this one took Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" and twisted it into a zombie plague. Scrooge was still the central character and was still visited by the three spirits, but of course, there was a zombie plague running rampant.
It was a good fun, read, perfect for the time of the year.

Upset that Marvel has found the need to place, in a rather large size, SAME DAY DIGITAL COPY FOR FREE plastered all over the covers.
Why not a simple card in the middle of the book, or a URL on the inside, I let slip the fact Spider Island had a friggin '#tag' on the cover, but now this?!

It's an enticing incentive to the potential buyer, to offset the additional $1 they're paying over the majority of DC titles.
It's a sales pitch.
Putting the ad inside the book would kinda defeat the purpose (and ads do mention this).
And really, it's still a MILE better than the Marvel ads in the 80's that had stuff like a third of the cover taken up with the 'Win A Bike At Toys R Us' etc. One of those annoys the hell out of me as it's on one of the key Dark Phoenix Saga issues, issue 137. 'THIS COMIC COULD BE WORTH $2500 TO YOU. BUGGER THE ART, THIS IS AN AD, BITCHES'.
This is far less obtrusive, and is good promotional tool for a flexible market, and value proposition for the customer (even though Marvel even admitted it doesn't need to charge $3.99 in the first place).
It could be far worse. ;)

I've only just recently started purchasing the regular monthly releases of a few comics series, Transformers and Batman, and was just wondering how people store theirs. Mine are just stacking up atm, but I would prefer to have them a bit more protected.
TPBs and hardcovers are easy as they just sit on the bookshelf. I guess my monthlies could as well, if jammed between two bookends or the like.

Your comic store will have the best method - bags and boards. (Just make sure you get the right size bags. There's different ones for older larger comics etc. Ask your comic store, they'll give you the right ones)
The bags and boards are acid-free, so they'll keep them in good shape. It also means you can't accidentally crease/tear them in a pile.
Then you can buy special cardboard boxes (again, your comic store should have these) which fit a couple of hundred of comics in. They're in two sizes - small and large. I prefer the small, but YMMV.
Altogether = perfect.
You'll find you have a lot more space, and that it's now so much more convenient to find a certain issue than digging through a jenga-style stack of unsorted comics.

I'm lazy and cheap so I don't use the boards. I just put two comics in the same bag (one facing front, one facing back). This saves me money (I only need half the number of bags and no boards) and two comics gives it enough firmness for my liking.

After earlier this year rdeucing my trade collection, I'm now slashing and burning my comic book collection. I'm almost all the way through it and there's a lot in the purge pile. As a benefit I have the best inventory of my comics I've had in a very long time.
The core X-Men books (and most of my Transformers titles naturally) are the only ones getting a free pass. I may need a second even more ruthless go through on them when I'm done on the first pass.
I checked my Comixology account and found I'm up to 266 digital comics and counting. That format has won me over for new comics (like the TF ones) that I can't wait for the trade for. Many of my comics have been in my long boxes for years. I reread my trades paperbacks, but I don't tend to revisit the individual comics anymore.
I'd prefer to upgrade as many comics for collected versions were I can. They are just more appealing to read to me now for the stories I really like. After reading some websites I've even been thinking a lot lately about comic binding (http://marvelmasterworksfansite.yuku.com/topic/8900/Comic-book-binding-FAQ#.T7JSz-iwzog). I've looked at some local companies that might be able to help, but would have to consider it against quotes. Anyone else looked at this?

I recall when I was very young my library having some bound issues of the Incredible Hulk (but you couldn't borrow it).
I stumbled across that link a little while ago and liked the idea for the books that haven't been reprinted.
My individual (nonTF) comics look to be down to just over one long box. Primarily Uncanny X-Men (and Classic X-Men) and (adjectiveless) X-Men, with X-Treme X-Men, Age of Apocalypse, Claremont's Fantastic Four Run, about 10 each of X-Factor, New Mutants, X-Force, Generation X, TMNT adventures, and a few other random books.
Looks like a much more manageable and focused collection now. :)

It seems the artist and writers just have no passion about it what so ever - with JRJR phoned in art, comments like Hickmans 'yeah last time we saw Hope, she was running out of an electronics store, but now she has jet plane, and Im not sure what issue, if at all, that got covered in, it keeps getting bigger and bigger and only the editors can keep track of it all.'

The X-Men have managed to sit out most of the big Marvel crossovers (except for the odd tie-in miniseries) but obviously not this one. I'm not hearing much good about the main story, although some of the tie-ins are okay, just a mess of continuity.
It annoys me that this new status quo change comes just a year after the last one (Schism). I'm generally sick of Marvel's yearly events though.

Hursticon, as much as I love Ultimate Spider-Man it's not "the real" Spider-Man, but that does make it a much more self-contained story than the 50 years of the real Spider-Man.

You going to get (or maybe you already have) the two that circle around those omni/OHCs you just showed?
X-Tinction Agenda and X-Cutioner's Song? (Bloodties is kinda optional, as it's straight after Fatal Attractions)
I actually got a lot of this stuff bound a few years ago.
Out of the 3 volumes I made, 2 are now pretty much obsolete, and replaced by the new ones. Ah well. I'd always hoped for official nice editions like this.
The third was adjectiveless 27-53 (pre-Onslaught, maybe 50), so it hasn't been neutered yet. I'd love to though, nicer paper for most.

The quality is really nice, but I do wish they'd used the opportunity to fix some of the colour mistakse from the originals.
I am deliberating on X-Tinction Agenda. The first trade I ever purchased was X-Tinction Agenda back in 199 or 94 or so so I already have it collected. And it was just reprinted in full (without subplot pages removed and in greyscale) in Essential X-Men #10 too.
I wouldn't have any doubt if it wasn't for the art. Jim Lee's issues are wonderful, and Rob Liefeld's are okay, but Jon Bogdanove's X-Factor issues are awful and not helped by having flat colouring and a style so out of place with the "Image" look.
I never read the Avengers & West Cost chapters of Bloodties so that's low on my list.

I am finding it a real bore to read through not to mention it jumps all over the place. I don't want to buy every issue of marvel to enjoy the story. But i think that is what u need to do.. At this moment I am hoping Frank Castle rides in and puts a few people down to finish the story....
There was a good couple of parts where spidey had a chance to shine tho...

I had a long wait to read AvX. I ordered the hardcover back in April to get 33% off, and it's now arrived. I was following the story through reviews and previews and bought issue 12 to see what the conclusion would be without spoilers.
The hardcover is a nice package and flicking through I do like the bright artwork but I don't have a lot of faith in the story. It's also a nice touch that it comes with a code to download the book via Comixology.
I like that they left the extra "Vs" series as a backup rather than trying to put those issues in the middle of the main 12 parter. There's another "companion" hardcover for all the crossovers but I don't feel the need to get that.
Overall, I'm more interested in the Now series. I like the new status quo for the X-Men's Extinction Team. Schism seemed really forced and I didn't like it, but this outcome is good just took a bit too long to get to. The "All New X-Men" series looks good too. I'm currently in no rush to read the Wolverine/Uncanny series between Schism and AvsX, and happy to jump back in with this NOW relaunch.

I'm seeing lots of good comments about the new series Saga. Anyone reading it?
I'm also hearing lots of great things about Hawkeye as well and am probably going to buy the first trade due out in a couple of months.
I've been reading All New X-Men and the first story arc just finished (they rushed out the five issues over a few weeks) and overall I like the series so far. Was a bit concerned about what Bendis would be like on the X-books but so far I like it, a few minor issues aside.

I read the first 3 issues of Saga... found it to weird for my tastes but I can see why people like it. I'm a big fan of the writer but the world/setting/weirdness didn't work for me.
Hawkeye has been pretty good if you can get past the almost retro style of art. I'd say picking up the first trade is a good idea... you'll either love it or just think it's ok.
All New X-Men has been better than I expected... was a bit worried about Bendis but I've enjoyed the crap out of it so far.

Has anyone been reading the marvel NOW! "not a reboot but a reboot" stuff??
out of most of the titles, (sorry i just cant get into X-titles anymore and havent read many of them) Thor: God of Thunder has impressed me the most.
Thunderbolts i also enjoy, something about the team is just brilliant, although i would like to see frank shoot wade on a regular basis...you know just because...Flash "Venom" Thompson seems to be the odd one out a little compared to the rest of the line up
Iron man is so so but 5 issues in the space of 2 months made it loose some appeal,
avengers i really didnt think it needed changing but for the time beong is so/so and that is all of them out so far
Superior Spider-Man.........anyone read this.... i mean first encounter spidey has with Dr Strange and it should all be over... i like spidey but why do they need to keep dishing him crap stories.....
Deadpool....Sucks... sorry DP but your old book was much more entertaining then the current drivel your dishing out and then you release Deadpool: Killistrated
What is everyone (if anyone) else think???

I was interested in checking out Uncanny Avengers, but a mind control story straight away has me less interested. Plus it seems to ignore all the work put into Rogue over the past few years in X-Men Legacy.
FF looks quite fun but otherwise I'm not venturing too far from my X-Men corner at the moment.
Re: your comment about Doctor Strange, the Superior Spider-Man has already come across one of the most powerful telepaths in the world and bluffed his way out of it. I liked this comment on the ridiculousness of it in another blog:
But no, in a world that was invaded by shape shifters a few days ago Marvel time, the cagey guy acting out of character can totally talk members of the most possessed sueprteam in the world into taking his increasingly agitated word for it that he’s legit.

Yeah but then dr strange doesn't read minds he should be able to pick up the essence of Peter Parker or "his ghost" that is shadowing Otto Parker as a disturbance in the astral force.......mystical detection. I mean that is what he whole last story arc of new avengers was.....
On a side not I am looking forward to guardians of the galaxy starting up again.

Hey guys,
Just read the 1st 4 issues of Wolverine & The X-Men and I thought it was great!
It has a sense of humour as well some great action, and I enjoyed how the the first day of class was contained in 3 issues. I've read some X-Force so aware of 'Genesis' and Warren/Angel, and like how it weaves in those elements.
I saw a preview for the 'Battle of the Atom' beginning with issue 36 (though I'm so far off from that) and other titles which looks amazing, I love X-Men future/past story lines, gotta catch up quick.
Also got the 1st 6 issues of Avengers by Jonathan Hickman and Jerome Opena, so far so good, awesome new roster for the team too!

X-Men #1 was released today. You know, the all-female team. Well it's great. Possibly X-Book of the year if subsequent issues can keep this up.

I'm curious about this new book. The reviews have been good and mention things I like, and Rogue (one of my favourites) looks better treated here than in Uncanny Avengers. The previous "Unadjective" book wasn't very good. I guess "All Women team" is a more unique angle than "X-Men team up" like the book used to be, but it also seems a bit forced. There are too many X-Men team books at the moment though (and Avengers too) and too much is meaningless. I've loved X-Men for years but I skip a lot of the content now because there's just too much that's not good.

The All New X-Men has been great so far, I highly recommend it! Waiting on the the first trade of Uncanny X-Men, but from what I've seen it looks great too!
Recently ordered from Book Depot the HC Age of Apocalypse Collection, I only ever read an issue here or there as I was too young to know what was actually going on haha so looking forward to it :)

AOA was a great event back in the day and still my favourite X-Men X-over. And that's a huge omnibus. I'm tempted to buy it but I have all the issues (and the AOA trades too) so I don't really need it.
I liked the first five issues of "All New". It's a great looking book.

All New X-men Vol. 2 is now out, havent got it myself yet though.
And AOA has shown up yet :( so currently reading both X-men and Uncanny leading up to Messiah Complex, so Supernovas, Blinded by the Light for X-men, and The Rise and Fall of the Shi-ar Empire and eXtremists for Uncanny.
Loved these when they first came out and enjoying them again :)

Ooo the new Uncanny X-Men HC came out today, first 5 issues. Picked mine up this morning.
Where is a good place to get X-Men trades? I wanna get all the Xtreme X-Men amongst others I can't find in Canberra.

Some of the Xtreme trades may be tricky to find (assuming you mean the original book).
The first two tpbs are solid material, really enjoyable.
After that though, it's a mess. The purpose of the book is forgotten thanks to a change in editorial mandate (diaries, what diaries?), the art suffers as Larocca was moved onto Namor (Namor!?), and the new characters just failed to engage (Slipstream and Lifeguard are just lame).
Those first two tpbs are solid though. Really enjoyable.

Yeah the original, not the new with Dazzler one that was recently cancelled with the 11 evil Xaviers
I'm a bit of a completest, so I'll prob wanna get all of them, but I understand the reasons it fell apart after the first 8 or so issues, editorial inteference, Grant Morisson's New X-Men and the so called for Marvel to want to re-vamp after re-vamp or something.
Always felt Larroca's art was fantastic compared to his later Uncanny run, up until Invincible Iron Man.

I prefer the first three volumes to the later ones.
The hardest volume to find is number 4, which reprinted the Mekanix (Kitty goes to college) limited series. I've been trying to find a copy to replace my single issues but cant find one under $50 in the last year.
Theres often a complete set of trades listed on eBay (it's been relisted and unsold several times) that might be worth having a search for if you are after all the volumes.

I can check to see which later volumes I still have.
The later ones do nothing for me, so they may as well be enjoyed by someone else.
And I've always got the single issues if I got really desperate to reread that stuff.

Sailor Moon vol 12 arrived today, completing the main storyline in the latest english translation.
Just two more short story volumes to go now to be absolutely complete.
These are great quality and much nicer than the Mixx versions, and a bit more accurate too with the naming.
I've never read all of StarS (or seen the Anime) so I need to start a complete reread someday soon.

Wolverine and the X-Men #41 is a thing of beauty.
I just felt that needed to be said. Also, Death's Head has his own comic today for the first time in so long, and it's drawn by Nick Roche. So it's a good week to head down to the comic shop.

I used to collect X-Men comics back in the day (and foolishly gave them all away) and I still pick up the odd 'The Tick' comic as, well, The Tick freaking rocks - SPOON!!!
I dont really buy non-TF comics since my TF obession takes up so much of my spare dosh, so I've been reading Deadpool comics people have uploaded. Some beautiful story arcs! Deadpool trapsing through the multiverse collecting other Deadpools, Deadpool vs The Hulk, Deadpool vs The Zombie Marvel Universe etc.
My favorite has to be 'Deadpool kills the Marvel Universe" where he realises they are all in a comic, there is no point to life and sets about killing every single character. Blows up the X-Men, tortures Professor X to death, shoots Spiderman through the skull, crushes Thor to death by enlarging his hammer with tech he stole from from Dr Pym (who he then killed :D) and so on.
Now Deadpool and The Tick together would = FUNNIEST COMIC EVER!!

a little off topic but Paul are you reading superman/batman comic ,art by Jae lee? is it any good?
I'm not a DC buyer, but I read the books the library gets in. That said I've barely read anything New-52. So I can't comment. But someone else might?
