This thread is for posting about Transformers related stuff that either:
* Doesn't expect a reply
* Doesn't belong in an existing thread
* isn't worthy of having an entirely new thread made for it

I was thinking the other day about Primus, Unicron and 'The One' What if Primus and Unicron are actually 2 parts that make up 'The One' and together they are the 'The One'

Just a random thought :p

I have the perfect idea for an alternate ending for Dark of the Moon/ Age of Extinction in the form of a stop motion, but don't have all the figures and a good stop motion editor and camera.

On a similar note, I would love to (while also working on my current on-hold for a while stop motion series) recreate a deleted scene from TFTM (1986) with Titan Devy. I still need to get Ultra Magnus, Takara Devy and the three countach boys before I can though.

My money is on Ironhide. I'm pretty sure he left his initials in the design. ;)
Does anyone else see what I mean?

The general consensus among fans is that the Autobot insignia was based on G1 Prowl/Bluestreak's head, and the Decepticon logo was based on Soundwave's. Anyway, here's a quick comparison pic...

As far as canon is concerned, the Autobot insignia is based on the image of Primus, while the Decepticon logo is based on Megatronus, a.k.a. The Fallen.

I knew about the insignia being the image of Primus, but was thinking along the lines of who (in the fictional Transformers world, not humanity or real world) designed the logo... and I can't help thinking from a fictional point of view Ironhide had some hand in it because those initials are pretty damn prominent. ;)
I'm sure someone could come up with some pretty witty storylines for how it that I and H just happened to be there.

Interesting theory, but that would presume that Ironhide had a great command of English millions of years ago back before humans developed it. Or perhaps like the Rigellian (http://simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/Rigellians) language, Cybertronian is coincidentally identical to English.

Also Ironhide only has one name (like Prince) so his initial is just I. So according to this theory maybe Hoist or Hound also collaborated with Ironhide.

Or maybe they are just Cybertronian symbols that just look like English letters. H is probably the Cybertronian symbol for Superman.:D

Throughout various continuities, the Autobots are described as being a faction or governing body on Cybertron that existed long before the Decepticons rose up and declared war against them. Thus the Autobrand is something that long predates the Cybertronian war, so it would appear that the origins of who and how the logo was designed may have been lost to antiquity. It may be a lot like asking "Who created the alphabet?"; such things aren't attributed to any single individual, but rather to various civilisations throughout time. The Autobrand probably started off as a religious symbol (re: Primus' face), but evolved through time to become the Autobot insignia. If we compare it with ancient religious symbols on Earth, we don't know who exactly created these symbols, but all we know is that they have become symbols. Whose idea was it to use a crucifix as a symbol of Christianity, the Star of David for Judaism, the Swastika as a symbol for Hinduism/Buddhism/Jainism (then later modified as the logo of the Nazi party)?

I don't think it's really possible to determine which single individual created the Autobrand. Even if Ironhide walked around claiming that he made it, he'd been seen as a lunatic. :p

I knew Sunstreaker was meant to be vain, but now Sunstreaker is Narcissus?

I don't know if the last line is meant to be a double entendre, but the whole sequence seems kind of random, especially with Devastator looming in the background. Now I'm curious, what's the context?

You've never read The Autobot's Secret Weapon? ;)

Spoilers: Devastator captures Sunstreaker as a hostage. Sideswipe and some of the Dinobots go to rescue him but they get caught too. Optimus Prime uses a trojan horse (a statue of Devastator) to sneak an Autobot army into Decepticon headquarters and save the day.

I prefer G1 because it reminds me of how I used to reenact TFTM w/ my G1 toys as a child. These photocomics are basically how my toy play looked like in my imagination. :D But look, I haven't touched this project in 7 years, so if people want to continue it with Classicsverse or MPs, then go for it. :) It might be a good idea for people to call dibs on certain scenes so that others don't end up wasting time doubling up on the same scenes, unless you're super keen to do that scene anyway, that's fine. But for the sake of attempting to complete the story, it might be more expedient for different people to work on different scenes. Also, it doesn't have to be in order either.

Ever wondered what English would look like if you removed loanwords from foreign languages?

Here's the first paragraph from the Wikipedia page on Transformers as it currently is in regular Modern English:

Transformers is a media franchise produced by American toy company Hasbro and Japanese toy company Takara Tomy. Initially a line of transforming toys rebranded from Takara's Diaclone and Microman toylines, the franchise began in 1984 with the Transformers toy line, and centers on factions of transforming alien robots (often the Autobots and the Decepticons) in an endless struggle for dominance or eventual peace. In its decades-long history, the franchise has expanded to encompass comic books, animation, video games and films.

Now here's my attempt at translating it into 'pure' English, replacing words of non-English origin with words of English origin. So no Latin, no Greek, no French, no Japanese etc., just Anglo-English words. ;)

Shapeshifters is a workgang rights made by Banded Folksdoms plaything club Goodfield-Brothers and Dawnlandish plaything club Riches Wealth. Firstly a set of shapeshifting playthings branded again from Riches Wealth’s Through-twig and Smallman plaything set, the rights was beginning in 1984 with the Shapeshifters plaything set, and looks at gangs of shapeshifting offworld steelmen (most oft the Self-steelmen and Outwit-steelmen) in an endless struggle for overlordship or as and when kinship. In its ten years long lore, the rights has unfolded to beset talestrips, livedrawing, stream games and films.

lol, that is pretty interesting Gok.

I think that maybe the names Shouuldn't be changed though (although specifically looking at Hasbro and Taktom. Because a name is a name.

I remember being in an Italian class in primary school, and my Pal Karl got told his name was Carlo. But even though Italian does have an equivalent to Karl, his name was never Carlo, as it was Karl. That's all. The rest I think is clever. I do see what you've done with Taktom and Japan.

What's the make up of hasbro? Bro(brother?) -> folksdom?

GoktimusPrime
5th September 2015, 09:35 PM
Oops, I meant to translate "Hasbro" as Goodfield Brothers (fixed now). It's a translation of the Jewish-Germanic name "Hassenfeld," cos Hasbro is an abbreviation of the Hassenfeld Brothers, who founded the company. :) Banded Folksdom is the United States (as both those words come from Latin).

Also, translating even names into Anglocised English words is part of the 'charm' of translating things into "Anglish." It's also different from translating texts to say Old English. The idea is to exclusively use Anglo words, but in their modern form. e.g. the word "brother" is English, but originated from the Old English word "brōthor," but I still use the word 'brother' and not 'brōthor.' So the idea of "Anglish" is to give text a certain level of 'pure English' charm, but without making so archaic that it becomes unintelligible to Modern English speakers. :)

It's just your generation. your oh so young generation.

I remember G1 with incredible fondness, then I dig out the toys and they are excellent, for their time. I think the best we've had ever as a "general release group" would probably be Generations over the last 5 to 10 years.

The best we've had ever in my mind would be masterpiece.

but every line has it's stand out toys, a top 5 from every toy line that's come out would produce a collection of extremely interesting, fun, complex, easy to pose and play with toys.

Yeah. G1's scope of articulation was often limited to swinging the arms up to horizontal at the elbow or shoulder. So many loose fists, weapons and rockets to lose.

They were bricks but the cartoons and a little imagination were enough to breathe life into them😊

Yeah I pretty much don't care much about G1 toys since they aren't well articulated compared to stuff from Beast Wars-onwards and haven't aged well, except for a few toys in G2 (Laser Optimus Prime, Dreadwing and Smokescreen are examples)

Pre-ordered Transformers Devastation (PS3) from EB Games today. :o

I just hope that the single player version is good enough so that this game will still be enjoyable after people stop playing the multiplayer version online. This is why fans have long referred to combiner team robots as "Gestalts." As well as distinguishing them from other forms of Combiners (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Micromaster_Combiner) (because from 1990-2001, that was the only official usage of the word 'Combiner'), it's also a reference to gestalt psychology (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gestalt_psychology), which looks at the mind as having a reality of its own that is separate from its parts. The word "gestalt" (say "ger-shtah'lt") means to be greater than the sum of ones parts.

So traditionally, gestalts tend to have gestalt minds; one that is greater than the sum of the individual minds that comprise it. This can be good or bad, depending on the individual minds themselves. It tends to work better among Autobot gestalts than Decepticon gestalts, because Autobots tend to be better at thinking more harmoniously and working cooperatively. Decepticons tend to be more selfish and even harbour ill feelings towards each other, which ends up creating a fractured gestalt mind. This is why Decepticon gestalts tend to be more psychologically unstable.

A balanced gestalt mind is required in order for the gestalt to function efficiently. Look at Defensor; you have two Protectobots with polar opposite views on combat. Blades, who's a violent action junkie, and Groove the pacifist (his personality was transplanted to First Aid in the G1 cartoon, but if you read the original tech specs bios, Groove is the pacifist). Defensor cannot allow Blades' more violent nature nor Groove's too pacifistic tendencies to dominate his mind, so what probably happens is that the two opposing views are balanced out, so that Defensor can be a force to reckon with, but only uses violence as a last resort. Decepticon gestalts are said to just become confused by the conflicting thoughts of their component members.

Regarding your question in terms of whether or not the component members can actually tap into each other's individual minds... I think it depends on the continuity, or possibly even the individual gestalt. It does appear to be that way in the IDW comics with Prowlastator etc. I'm not sure if Menasor had that level of psychological intimacy... cos Motormaster would likely want to kill all the other Stunticons if he knew how they truly felt about him (they all hate Motormaster). Or at the very least, refuse to work together again.

Although this might explain why Combiner Wars Groove has been relegated as a chest plate. :p

On one hand, that at least explains why even among "Scramble City" type combiners (or any combiner who can exchange limbs with another, really) there are still teams: presumably those teams would have the best assortment of personalities, or at least the closest bond, to allow them to form the most effective gestalt personality. So for instance a version of Ultra Prime made up of Optimus, Rodimus, and the four Protectobots wouldn't integrate as effectively as Defensor would.

On the other, it makes me wonder about those individuals such as Optimus Prime, Cyclonus, Grand Scourge, and apparently CW Scattershot, who are able to form their "Combiner" with any group of limbs they choose. Are the combined forms they create "ineffective" due to an insufficient balancing of personality components, or are the personalities of the torso/core simply so forceful that they are able to override those of their limbs? Given the individuals to whom this applies, I'd suggest it's the latter, but I'm a little iffy about whether Cyclonus and Scattershot are really that willful. It's an interesting topic to consider either way.

As someone who only had the cartoon to go on (I didn't get to read too many toy bios back in the day, and I certainly didn't read any comics), I always thought that there was a separate, latent personality for the combined form inside the torso/leader, and that was unlocked or activated when the team combined.

That's pretty much how I've always played it with my toys. :D It was also helped justify all the 'mix and matched' gestalts I had. e.g. Hot Spot combined with Slingshot, First Aid, Lightspeed and Afterburner was still Defensor etc.

From here (http://otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=21616&page=9)

My statement was poking fun at the reality that they are probably the two most trash-talked characters in G1. Despite this, Hot Rod is definitely a popular character (proven by how many toys/homages he gets) and an MP two pack with Wheelie would sell, just like any MP would these days.
Rodimus Prime wasn't nearly as bad as Wheelie in the G1 cartoon. He would've been a better leader if he didn't compare himself with Optimus Prime so much, where he was often seen doubting himself and not feeling worthy to be Optimus' successor. Guh. Bumblebee does the same thing in the current Robots In Disguise series, which was also highly annoying, but I did like how <RiD2015 spoiler> even after Optimus Prime returned from the dead, he refused to usurp Bumblebee, insisting that Bumblebee retain his position as Autobot commander. </spoiler> It's a significant improvement over the G1 cartoon, where the complete opposite happened. But honestly, aside from the occasional moments of self-doubt, Rodimus Prime really was actually an alright Autobot leader.

Wheelie and Daniel on the other hand is a whole 'nuther story. As I've often said on other threads, they're basically the G1 cartoon's equivalent to Jar Jar Binks. They are characters who takes up a lot of screen time (Wheelie appears more frequently than any of the other 1986 Autobot Mini-Cars, especially poor Hubcap who never even appeared at all!), but yet they contributes so little to the actual story. So Ultra Magnus doesn't get a birthday (that's not even his actual creation date)... big freakin' whoop. Daniel, Wheelie and Jar Jar are characters where you could omit almost all of their screen appearances and it would make very little (if any) difference to the story. They are just wasting screen time. The tap-dancing monkey (http://tfwiki.net/mediawiki/images2/5/55/NewRecruit-Starscreammonkey.jpg) from TF Prime actually has greater significance in its screen appearance than Wheelie or Daniel! I'm serious! Wheelie was slightly less annoying in The Headmasters (although that's not hard); at least the Japanese version doesn't make him constantly speak in lame rhymes... uh... otherwise he's still pretty stupid.

Many of you will remember Rob Jung's "Trannies" awards that ran through the 90s and 00s where Daniel and Wheelie were consistently voted by fans as the most hated characters in all Transfandom. And who could forget the BotCon 2001 comic which brutally killed off Daniel and Wheelie (http://tfwiki.net/mediawiki/images2/9/99/Departure-WheelieDaniel.jpg) - and it's official canon! :D I remember laughing my head off when I first found out, and laughing and high-fiving other fans over it. :o (I later experienced a similar reaction when I saw Robot Chicken's "Jar Jar Returns" skit (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdS2kCUGvfo) (although alas that's not canon :p).

This isn't to say that Wheelie is an inherently bad character, per se. His original tech specs bio actually portrays him as something better, which the G1 cartoon failed to capitalise on. He was originally described as something akin to Mowgli from Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book. The wild boy, the survivor (his function is Survivalist after all). The Big Looker Books and IDW comics have been more accurate to Wheelie's original character.

why do the simpler easier to mold shelf warming rid warriors COST $4 more than the complex (sort of) CW deluxe class figures?

No idea... but, the customer demographics are different.

(for those not knowing what Jaxius is talking about, these are the prices here of these two size-classes)
GEN Deluxe (US RRP - $17) - - 25 KM... 29 BW... 30 TW/TG/TRU/M...
RID Warrior (US RRP - $15) - - 29 KM/TG/BW... 30 TRU... 32-35 TW...

The RID toys are are like regular gimmick toys, they are aimed at parents and "gift" purchasing by those who most often buy random toys in a toyline (or even random toylines) and don't know that RID Warriors are cheaper than GEN Deluxes in America ($15 Vs $17). As such, they could be made to pay more for it, and not question it if it is in their budget.
The GEN toys are aimed at committed collectors (new or old) who are there to specifically buy certain toys, and are more likely to factor in pricing, because they buy often enough to be familiar, or they have been online about their hobby. As such, they would purchase from alternate sources, like importing, if it is cheaper.

I would like to think that Hasbro Australia have done this intentionally, so that the RID (and gimmick) toys are subsidising the Generations toys here, because they are aware of the two target demographics... knowing that if they have to raise prices due to the dropping AU$, the RID toys will still sell here at higher prices, but the GEN toys are less likely to.

Micro Machones were all the rage and were grabbing a big slice of the toy market so Hasbro essentially nicked the idea for Micromasters. Different trademarks - like Lego and KreO.

Hasbro is not above plagiarism ;)

Micromasters were made by Hasbro to copy/compete with Galoob's Micro Machines (a bit like creating Kreo to copy/compete with Lego).

But just like Kreo, Micromasters didn't last, and around the 1990s, Hasbro started buying up a number of smaller toy companies instead of competing with them.... which included Galoob (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galoob) (Micro Machines), Tonka, Kenner (Gobots & Star Wars), and a few others.

So now brands like Micro Machines are owned by Hasbro, and it's just been a while since they last sold them (I think the Star Wars Titaniums in around 2008 were considered "Micro Machines" as they had Galoob on the packaging).
The reason for the Star Wars Micro Machines this year is because Mattel gained a license to do diecast Star Wars vehicles under their Hot Wheels Brand, and Micro Machines from Hasbro was probably allowed by Disney, as long as they are "micro" sized so that they don't clash with Mattel's license (Hasbro can produce action figures and vehicles with their exclusive license, but Mattel must have gained a license to exclusively produce diecast vehicles that are Hot Wheels sized).

Also, there was an economic recession in the early 90s (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_1990s_recession) (many of us G1ers will remember Paul Keating describing it as "The recession we had to have" (http://www.theage.com.au/news/business/the-real-reasons-why-it-was-the-1990s-recession-we-had-to-have/2006/12/01/1164777791623.html)). With more families tightening their belts, it meant that toy companies like Galoob and Hasbro were looking at ways of downsizing toys to make them cheaper and give people better value for money.

And I gotta say, one of the best things about collecting Micromasters was the incredibly awesome value for money! :D You could grab a Micromaster Patrol with your pocket money and get four Transformers in a single purchase. Six if you bought a Combiner Squad (which were a bit dearer). For birthdays or Xmases, you could get a boxed Micromaster playset, which included its own Micromaster figure, and of course, they all joined up to create a big Micromaster metropolis! :D And boy did our collection counts suddenly growing at an exponential rate!

True - Micromasters make up more than a quarter of my G1 collection count.

Micromasters were made by Hasbro to copy/compete with Galoob's Micro Machines (a bit like creating Kreo to copy/compete with Lego)

Some younger fans might not realise how closely they imitated Micro Machines back then. The four pack, the reflective silver foil under the vehicles, even the original design of the 'Micro' brand on the TF boxes is suggestive of the Galoob packaging. And of course the TV advertising for the Micromasters: "The Most Incredible Micros Of All. They're Not Just Small"!

Ordered from PC, so it worked out to be about $260 for both sets, which seems like a bit, but when broken down between 12 figures, it's actually just under $22 per individual transformer - cheaper than almost any of the other CW figures I've got, plus I'm building up a Neo-G2 collection, so why not?

Last night I dreamed that there was a two pack released of the second Beast Hunters Voyager Optimus Prime and the first Alternators Ravage mould, which was also recoloured as Optimus Prime. For some reason they could combine in the dream. Also, the Ravage-Prime abomination came with a new Optimus head as standard, but also had a Ravage head which when attached to the body turned it black so it looked more like Ravage. Both the combination and the head swapping gimmick were really disappointingly loose and I could hardly get them to stay together.

I really hope Hasbro aren't paying too close attention to my dreams or this board. If they are, we might just see this as a Platinum Year of the Monkey release next year!

A sighting from a few days ago - TRU Frankston had the platinum Blaster and Perceptor 2-pack on clearance, down from $199 to $189. The reason? According to the sticker applied by TRU staff, the "microscope does not work".

I didn't see if it was still sealed but I'm presuming it was sold, opened and returned. I also don't know if Perceptor's microscope is supposed to be a working one. So I'm left speculating: was it returned complete, or did someone buy it, remove a gun or a missile or something they needed, then return it with a stupid reason (ie "I was expecting a working microscope")? Was it meant to have a working microscope and this one didn't, and TRU staff thought that this decreased the value by only $10? Who is going to buy something that is faulty/doesn't work but that is still overpriced by a minimum of $50 (based on what you can get it for elsewhere)?

(Edit: According to TFWiki, the original Perceptor toy had a working (albeit crude) microscope. This does not resolve my speculation )

An even stupider reason: Back in my uni days I worked in the toys section of a department store, and every once in a blue moon we'd get customers returning TF Movie/ROTF transformers and saying that the toy is defunct because they can't transform it.

Unfortunately this only happened on my days off, and I come back to a perfectly good mistransformed robot in a mangled mess. Eventually it disappears off the shelf so I assume it was bought or just had a five finger discount applied to it.

That's an interesting point.
Unless the packaging specifically says that the two images on the back of the package is the one toy in two forms, could it be claimed (intentionally or in ignorance of not knowing what Transformers toys do) that the package should have "both" inside as if they were actually two different toys (not one toy with two forms).

Using Dirtboss as the example, if you didn't know the multi-form gimmick of Transformers toys, you could look on the packaging and assume that the two toy photos on the back means two toys should be in the pack. (some Transformers toys can look like unrelated toys in both modes, especially if it has completely different colours between modes)
After all, non-converting toys generally don't show multiple photos of the contents as it could suggest that all of them is supposed to be inside the box.

For those thinking that Transformers would never have two modes of the same character on the pack AND have two different toys in the packaging... think again. The Titanium Optimus 3-pack (http://www.unicron.com/tfitem/itemimage_imgsrc.php?imageID=195&size=9999) had on the back, photos of the robot mode, truck mode and pre-earth mode... and guess what, it had three toys in the pack (http://www.transformerland.com/store/inventory/150423/IMG_19294.JPG).
True, that's the exception, but I'm sure there is probably a legal argument that could claim that the packaging is advertising two toys but only includes one, because it doesn't state that it is the one toy, or the "sold separately" disclaimer of other products shown on the packaging.

I supposed if the name of the brand is not self-explanatory enough, then perhaps Hasbro could further simplify the name. As our e-marketing team are always telling us that today's fast-paced media has reduced consumers' attention span to that of fruit flies, Hasbro should also do away with lengthy written bios for characters. Bright colours, a catchy character name, and an arsenal of weapons could be introduced to draw people in - the more Heroic the character is, the more weapons they need to defend against evil. The end result may look something like this (http://i49.tinypic.com/33vhv9l.jpg).

My wife managed to find me two TF things for my b'day that I didn't already have: one of those TF4 Optimus wall/nightlight head things and a Predacons Rising Cindersaur/Smokescreen 2-pack. :)

Funny thing is, It's my 38th birthday and Sarah didn't even realise Smokescreen has great big 38's on his doors until I pointed it out. She was super chuffed when I showed her that :D

The original Smokescreen was always large chested. Ya know, on account of his chest being the entire freakin' front end of a car n' all. :o From a realism POV, having such a large protrusion would be quite impractical, and a liability in battle. The far more streamlined designs used in the live action films (e.g. Jazz (http://static.srcdn.com/slir/w500-h238-q90-c500:238/wp-content/uploads/transformers-jazz.jpg)) actually makes more sense. The fewer protrusions you have in battle, the better (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/81/f9/e8/81f9e835fa070250f53fa5e92230bd93.jpg). ;)

G1 vs modern toys
Both G1 and modern TFs are a mixed bag. Excluding adult-centric lines like MP and just looking at 'general release figures,' there are awesome figures like Generations, but also poorer figures like RiD2015 and AoE. But G1Gee-Wun had its ups and downs too. Sure, we had awesome figures like Optimus Prime, Soundwave, the Decepticon Jets, the Autobot Cars etc., but we also had some ordinary figures (even by the standards of the day) like Windcharger, Gears, Ironhide, Ratchet, the Jumpstarters (massive shelfwarmers), Warpath (one of the worst pegwarmers of the Gee Wun era) etc. But on the whole, modern TFs have definitely evolved beyond G1. There are so many features on modern toys which were just a pipe dream during G1, including:
* Better detailed sculpting
* Tampographed and painted details instead of stickers (Arms Micron, anyone?)
* Robot modes are actually action figures with typically 9 points of articulation.
* Far better durability and physical survivability. G1 toys broke far more easily.
Having said that, one thing that I miss from most pre-2007 lines is having the toys being developed by toy designers, not by animators. I've never been a fan of toys being developed as screen characters first for toy designers to then 'translate' as toys. I much prefer for the toys to be made first, then have animators or artists render them as images. We do get this with Classicsverse, but not so much with the more kid-focused lines like Animated, Prime and RiD2015. Some of my favourite toys from these lines have been ones which never appeared in the cartoon, and that'd be because they were designed as toys for being toys, not as adaptations of a screen character (e.g. Arms Micron Frumble).

Die-cast metal
There are pros and cons with die-cast vs plastic, as has been discussed in more detail on the die-cast metal thread (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=20149). But I think that UltraMarginal raised some good points about the disadvantages of using die-cast metal here (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showpost.php?p=453138&postcount=3).

Media: cartoons
As with the toys, it's a mixed bag. But on the whole, I'd say that Animated and TF Prime are on par with the G1 cartoon. With a small number of exceptions, these shows typically lack character drive and are more based on caricatures. Both the post-movie seasons of G1 and RiD2015 are attempts at maturing the series, but I do think that G1's Seasons 3 and 4 actually did a better job (in spite of having Wheelie and Daniel ). The tone of RiD2015 feels like a big emotional step backwards after TFP took steps at maturing the show in Seasons 2 & 3, as well as Predacons Rising. I was looking forward to seeing a TFP sequel pick up from this and run forward with it (as G1 S3-4 did after TFTM), but I just don't think that it did.

Media: comics
Marvel vs IDW G1... oooh, that's a tough one, as I actually really like both for different reasons, and both have their strengths and weaknesses over each other. IMHO...
* Marvel's comics were definitely written for a younger audience, as it was essentially created to sell toys. Having said that, on the whole Marvel did a pretty bang up job in creating some memorable character-driven story arcs. :) Remember that the G1 Transformers' tech spec bios were written by Marvel.
* Marvel worked under relatively greater pressure from Hasbro than IDW, because Hasbro would often dictate which toys that they wanted Marvel to remove or introduce into the comics. Toys that were no longer in production were removed, new toys were introduced. So writers would sometimes write big kill fests to take out old toys (e.g. Underbase Saga, the Time Wars etc.), and then introduce new toy--, uh, characters. ;) Having said that, I really like having a toy-driven comic series. One thing that sometimes bugs me with IDW is seeing recurring characters and not having toys of them to collect and play along with! Where are my toys for Rung and Atomiser?! Okay, I know that G1 had its fair share of comic and cartoon exclusive characters too (e.g. Impactor, Alpha Trion, Xaaron etc.), and yes, I did often long for having toys of these characters. But back in the 80s, there was a more limited number of toys to draw up to populate the story, and inventing characters was a necessity because you wanted a character that you could freely keep or remove from the comics without concerning Hasbro. IDW are, by and large, not working under these conditions. They have 30 odd years' worth of toys to draw from! Thousands of figures that they could use! Actually, I'm pretty stoked to see Hubcap make a recent appearance in the IDW comics, as he had zero appearance in either the Marvel comics or Sunbow cartoon! :D
* IDW comics are definitely more mature and deeper than Marvel ever was. 'Good' and 'evil' are just illusions. Every side and every fighter thinks that they are the "good guys," which is a far more realistic way at looking at things. Nobody is ever motivated by consciously thinking that they're in the wrong!
* IDW comics also make far better allegories and metaphors with several things IRL, including society, government, religion etc. Yes, G1 touched on this as well, even the G1 cartoon, but not nearly to the same level as IDW. G1 had to be more subtle because they were aimed at a younger audience, whereas IDW are much more open about it, and as such, can take it to a much higher level than Marvel or Sunbow ever could. G1 comics were bound by the controversial and now defunct Comics Code Authority (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comics_Code_Authority).
* A lot of the art in IDW are computer enhanced, and that's great, but I still really love a lot of the greater reliability on hand-drawing in the Marvel Comics. Unfortunately the US comics did suffer from rather bland colouring by Nel Yomtov, and also a really "low res/pixelated" quality of print and cheap newspaper-grade paper which was typical for American comics at the time. But the UK comics used a far higher quality of print and better glossy paper. While not all UK comics were in colour, those that were enjoyed a notably superior level of colouring -- hand painted colours and visual effects! And there were some really great artists that vividly brought the Transformers to life, like Geoff Senior. :)
* TRANS-FOOOORM! The Transformers more often transformed when they needed to in the Marvel Comics! The IDW comics has a lot more running around... do these Transformers forget that they can become much more faster moving cars and planes? Quick! Cyclonus to the rescue! On foot!

Spike: "Why do you transform into cars and things?"
Trailbreaker: "Simple, disguise! Besides, it sure beats walking."
(More Than Meets The Eye)* Marvel writers used gooder (sic) English! I'm sick of finding basic and recurring errors in the IDW comics.

Hating Beast Wars
Guh... the online fandom was rife with debates over the merit of Beast Wars around 1996-98. Detractors of Beast Wars ultimately lost this argument. Hearing people still trying to detract it today is weird... like the Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. You've already lost the fight, you silly sod! ("What are you going to do, bleed on me?") But here's some ammunition you can use in your home debates. ;)
+ Transformers would probably NOT exist today if not for Beast Wars and we wouldn't even be having this discussion. The Transformers franchise was practically dead in the water by 1995. Beast Wars came out in 1996. Transformers became the 3rd best selling action figure line in the USA by 1997. Check and mate. And Hasbro reissued many Gee Wun era toys in the early 90s, then reused many Gee Wun moulds for Generation 2. Our precious Gee Wun moulds failed to revitalise the brand.
+ All the advantages about modern TFs over G1s came from Beast Wars! BW standardised the idea of Transformers as action figures. Highly detailed w/ superior paint apps, self-contained weaponry/gestalt components and articulation for poseability and in robot mode -- Beast Wars, baby! Heck, even some of the design features still used in Generations and Masterpiece today can be seen in some Beast Wars toys. They were that ahead of their time. And while many CHUGUR toys completely outclass their G1 counterparts, I've yet to see a CHUGUR toy that I considered to be superior to their original BW versions (relative to their size class/price point).
+ Many G1 toys were so blocky and ungainly, that G1 artists had significant modification to make them look cooler on screen or on pages. The reverse was true for Beast Wars; the toys were actually 3D scanned, and the scans were then used as the basis for rendering CGI models to be used in the cartoon. Yes, creative licensing was used, but on the whole, BW TFs on screen were relatively more toy-accurate than most G1s. Even Blackarachnia is a much closer approximation of her toy than say G1 Ironhide or Ratchet. Blackarachnia most has deformed body proportions (to make her look more feminine as well as different from Tarantulas), but is otherwise actually reasonably toy-accurate.
+ Beast Wars is the best Transformers story ever written for a screen media IMHO. There is just no contest. It was written to appeal to both child and adult audiences alike -- lots of cool transforming action mixed with character-driven story arcs. I wish the IDW comics would inject a bit more transforming action. There's no reason why you can't have both; one of my favourite moments from when Rodimus' team were pursuing Brainstorm through time, was when Cyclonus quickly punched it into jet mode in a tight chase to catch Brainstorm, only for him to just miss Brainstorm! The action complemented the intense drama quite well! This is what I really like about BW -- awesome action accompanying great drama. The Bay movies can suffer from having lots of awesome action, but not enough character-driven drama, but sometimes I feel that the IDW comics can sit on the other end of this spectrum and be too character-driven drama without enough transforming action to go along with it. And there are plenty of opportunities for it. I often read through the IDW comics and think, "He could've done that in alt mode. Probably would've been easier."
+ Beast Wars makes G1 better! e.g. one common question was about just how Transformers were living creatures. BW gave us a definitive answer through something known as a Spark. This is still used in Transformers lore today, even IDW! Why did Starscream become a ghost and haunt other Transformers while others like Optimus Prime never did? Beast Wars answers this! Why were Micromasters created? Okay, G1 answered this, but Beast Wars expanded on this!

I never said that. You don't have to like Beast Wars, but that's different from hating it (and thus rubbishing it). All I'm saying is that fans ought to respect Beast Wars and the amazing and continuing contribution that it's made to the brand. But this doesn't mean you have to like it, you can respect something that you don't necessarily like. :o

Good on it for bringing TFs back but if that is the main point then we better thank Michael Bay as well
While the Bay movies definitely did give the Transformers brand a massive boost (doubling toy sales between 2007-08), it did NOT revitalise the Transformers brand. The key difference is that if Beast Wars had never come along, the brand would have died off. If the Michael Bay movie never came along, the brand would have continued to thrive, because it was already thriving long before the movies came along. The live action movies are a product of the brand's new success, not the cause of it. And remember that Hasbro were prepared for the first movie's failure (because at the time nobody knew if it would succeed or not), which is why they had Transformers Animated up their sleeves (with a complete opposite aesthetic to the live action film; and remember that Animated Bumblebee was originally meant to be Hot Shot). Okay, the brand probably wouldn't be as massive and mainstream as it is now without the movies, but it wouldn't have died off.

By the early to mid 00s, HasTak were already well aware that the children of the 80s had become adults with disposable incomes. HasTak had already begun exploiting this with several different "high end" series that targeted the niche adult collector market, such as: G1 reissues, Binaltech, Masterpiece, Smallest Transforming Transformers, PVCs figurines etc. Even the mainstream brand was still pretty strong in the years leading up to the first live action film, with things like the Unicron Trilogy, as well as the Classics line which simultaneously appealed to kids and adults alike.

Also, I personally don't think that the movie toys have revolutionised the way that Transformers toys are made today. IMHO late G2 and BW toys that introduced the idea of Transformers as action figures was like the TF toy equivalent of splitting the atom. ;)

Picked him up based on his game rendition, pretty accurate (well as accurate as the FOC line ever was) but yeah, without his "wings" doesn't look like Jazz's traditional form.

I think 365 Transformers is a good maximum number to own. One for everyday of the year. What about leap years? Well I haven't quite thought this all the way through now have I.

But in line with his G1 character model... (And Movie Jazz and Animated Jazz). It's going to be interesting when they get around to Masterpiece Jazz and what they do to make it anime accurate (or not and make it toy accurate).

Energon Wing Saber splits into 4 parts. You can choose to play with him once every four years, or different quarter of him each year. ;)

I love it when people walk into my home and see one of my display cabinets full of Optimus Primes for the first time. I have one in the lounge you see from the front door which makes quite an impression with those who are first time visitors.
Whether they be children or adults the "wow - that's amazing!"/"those are all Optimus?"/"You collect Transformers?!?!!" that tends to follow brings a smile to my face. The adults in particular often ask questions or start reminiscing about their Transformers memories of the G1 cartoon/toys/life in the 80's, etc with genuine delight and fondness. Also makes a great conversation starter in general...

Whilst my collection is for me, I do enjoy that others can appreciate and get a little happiness from it too.

Does anyone else ever have this experience?

I have had it a few times,

My wifes friend and her husband came over and when he saw the cabinet in the Lounge room his eyes nearly fell out of his head, his comment was that I was living the dream.

I have had other similar reactions, but none quite so excited, most of my friends are nerds on some level so they appreciate a collection like that.

Back in my old house I had a room dedicated to Transformers (and my collection was around 600 figures + MISC back then - nearly 3 times the size now). Whenever I'd have a party there would always be at any one time two or three guys in the TF room all acting the same. Sipping beers in almost complete silence staring at the shelves with the silenced interspersed with the odd "I think I used to have that one" uttered.

It was funny to see everyone, no matter their personality or background, reduced to pretty much the same behavior of interested awe :D

What the Night Sky Would Look Like if the Other Planets Were as Close as the Moon (http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2013/06/what-the-night-sky-would-look-like-if-the-other-planets-were-as-close-as-the-moon/277247/)
^Doesn't include Pluto, which is 1172km smaller in diameter than our moon.

Anyway, this got me thinking about what Cybertron would look like in the Earth's sky. Now of course, Cybertron's size varies wildly depending on which continuity you're looking at. And there were two times where we saw Cybertron get close to Earth, which of course was in the G1 cartoon ("The Ultimate Doom") and the movieverse (Dark of the Moon). In the G1 cartoon, Cybertron appears to be about the size of our Moon. In the movieverse, Cybertron is massive -- possibly around the size of Jupiter. The G1 comics explicitly stated that Cybertron was about the size of Saturn. In the Unicron Trilogy, Cybertron is meant to be roughly the same size as Earth, so the nearest pic comparison there would be Venus.

So Cybertron might look something like this...

I can't think of any logical reason for it. Bear in mind that English is an exotic sound foreign language to most Japanese people, and simply the sound or look of words can be more appealing than the meaning or any linguistic logic.

Hasbro has sometimes used illogical or even nonsensical names at times. e.g.
* Megatron. Mega is Greek for "great," but what's 'tron'? (other than the title of a Disney film franchise)
* Galvatron. 'Galva' actually comes from the name of the Italian physician, Luigi Galvani (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luigi_Galvani).
* Ultra Magnus. Conflicting feminine + masculine Latin genders. Not sure what the correct version should be... Ulter Magnus? Ultrum Magnus? Either way, I don't think it should be "Ultra Magnus." At least they used the correct feminine declension with Elita-1's name. :o
* Banzaitron. 'Banzai' (万歳) basically means, "Long live the Emperor." And yeah... Tron again.
* Kobushi. This just means, "Old Warrior" (古武士). It sounds more like a function than a name.
* Night Cruz. Cruz is just Spanish for "cross," as in the shape. It doesn't mean "cruise."
* Dr. Fujiyama. "Fujiyama" isn't a real Japanese word/name. It's the linguistic equivalent of saying words like "gooder" or "gooderest" in English. Yeah, you get what the person means, but it's wrong. Not even Thundercracker's that bad. :p #susanjourneyer #joshboyfriend

So yeah... English names/words matter about as much to the average Japanese person as Latin, Greek, French (etc.) matters to a lot of Anglophones. A lot of people just like it because it's exotic, but couldn't care less about the meaning or linguistic logic. Also, there are a few other odd Anglophone names used for Japanese Transformers, such as the Micromasters Joe and Alan!

I believe Megatron is actually derived from megaton, as in the explosive power of a nuclear bomb. At the time Transformers was conceived of, nuclear war was still a looming threat, so a name derived from the destructive power of a nuke was appropriately sinister sounding.

"Tron" gets used to make things sound robot-y all the time, but I have no idea where it comes from.

ETA: I looked it up - apparently "tron" is derived from "electron", so now it starts to make sense. While "Megatron" isn't a name with a lot of meaning from a linguistic point of view, the combination of megaton with electron gives a name that has a lot of meaning due to connotation. It's a shame no-one ever decided to make anything of the similarity of the name Megatron to the Hebrew Metatron, though a religious fanatic Megatron probably isn't the best direction to take the character.

Well I just finished some new shelves so I now have dedicated MP Season 1, Season 2 and rest of MP shelves. Season 2's lineup however looks a bit underwhelming with just Smokescreen, Red Alert and Tracks.

GoktimusPrime
13th February 2016, 08:04 PM
Bear in mind that in Japan, the US G1 Seasons 1 and 2 were all one series ("Fight! Super Robot Life Transformers"); so from a JP POV, it's just one really massively huge season. So from TakaraTOMY and their market's POV, there is no real impetus to prioritise either season over the other. I personally wish that they'd prioritise the first (1984) series of toys for MPs, but I understand that this bias effectively doesn't exist for the Japanese.

Having said that, TakaraTOMY seem to pretty good at killing multiple birds with the one stone by retooling new MP moulds. e.g. Sideswipe→Red Alert; Prowl→Bluestreak→Smokescreen etc., so we've been able to get a good spread of 1st and 2nd year toys. Ratchet will be the next retool, but as far as other potentials are concerned, we'd have:
* Trailbreaker→Hoist
* Inferno→Grapple
That's it as far as original G1 characters are concerned. Other retool potentials would be delving into more obscure characters, and if the shelf-warming MP Road Rage is any indication, these don't seem to sell as well as mainstream characters. Even MP Tracks is shelfwarming atm, which indicates that TakaraTOMY may be nearly exhausting their available choices of popular characters to make as MPs.

Continued from here (http://otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?p=511846#post511846) (rather than derailing what is meant to be a toy review thread) :p ;)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

We all know that Groove is a massive pacifist. The G1 toy comes with guns, but they're described as being "vaporators" which he uses pinpoint accuracy in order to oxidise, freeze or corrode opponents' joints, thus physically incapacitating them rather than killing them. The Unite Warriors Deluxe figure comes with big guns too. I don't have this toy, so I have no idea what kind of guns they are. If it's anything like UW Superion, then the individual weapons aren't described; the original Japanese text just says "Silverbolt's weapon," "Air Raid's weapon" etc. I took the creative liberty of applying the G1 names to their weapons in the English adaptation. So I'm guessing here that TakaraTOMY would've done the same for Guardian/Defensor and not bothered with the individual weapon names. Also, Groove's G1 Japanese tech specs states that he comes with twin "anti-crystallisation cannons" (反結晶砲) and a photon gun (光子銃). And he boasts and impressive Firepower of 6!

So here's the thing; what do you think a modern-day Groove might shoot from his guns, to better align with his anti-violent views? Groove may very well carry an assortment of weapons or ammunition which he may choose to use depending on the situation, and I reckon they might include:
* Electro-stun rounds
* EMP blaster
* Restraining substances, such as sticky expanding goo (https://youtu.be/dK_OKGELcn0?t=132)
* Meta grenades (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXu6lQqhieA) :D
* Pain inducing substances or rounds; they would simulate the debilitating pain of something horrible like a Scraplet or Cosmic Rust infection on the opponent, but is harmless in reality. Basically the Cybertronian equivalent of Capiscum spray.

And one would think that Groove would now be a master in Diffusion; the Cybertronian martial art which specialises in incapacitating opponents while minimising harm to them (e.g. grapples, holds, take-downs etc.). Essentially the Cybertronian equivalent of Aikido (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvTxSZ9Y7D4), Juujutsu (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wDj732M6ag), Tai Chi (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fs_kdGe8Ljc), Bagua (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWzgoCvCUrg), Pankration (http://www.awakeningfighters.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/prankration.jpg) etc. And it wouldn't be surprising if he carried melee weapons too; bearing in mind that even blades don't appear to be quite as lethal against Cybertronians. But he could easily carry blunt weapons such as extendable batons etc.

Hopefully her wrath will be mitigated somewhat by the fact only 3 are for me. 6 are for our son, and the other 12 are split over two other friends. The idea is that we all got them all and will give them to our own sons as well as the other friends sons for their birthdays and Xmas so by the end of the year all three boys will have 6 Rescuebots. The three lads are so into Rescuebots that they were going to get them anyway - this way it saves having to buy extra gifts for friends kids :)

My current MP-10 Optimus and MP-11 Starscream molds are the Hasbro versions, because I came late to the party with those particular figures. I've typically only collected the TT masterpieces (obviously they release more).

I'm debating whether to buy the TT versions at some point, but wonder whether it's money I should bother to spend.

I guess it depends how badly you want the Takara versions? If you prefer the look of the Takara version over the Hasbro version. Or if the Hasbro version just doesn't look right to you in your masterpiece display. I mean, it really comes down to personal preference.

I know the MP10s have slight paint variations (takara has darker blues and greys), I don't know about MP11 though.

Anyway, if you want to got the takara route, HLJ still has MP10 available:
http://www.hlj.com/product/TKT39840/Sci

So you could sell your Hasbro MP10 and get that. Or even just keep both and display one in vehicle mode.

Not 'in trouble' per se however she hasn't been happy at times when I've had a lot of expensive preorders come in over a relatively short period. Can't really blame her for that as for the most part she is very tolerant of my toy indulgences.

Debating whether or not to sell my movie collection. Thinking about the figures brings back great memories of hunting them down with my mate, especially when local stores actually seemed to carry truck loads of stock. However pondering about them now.... I don't know if the movie aesthetic holds up for what I want in my collection.

Maybe I'll just get rid of the Autobots (as I'm totally a Decepticon man!), but we will see.

I remember those days, working at Kmart and seeing an entire aisle full of TF figures around the time of ROTF. Nowadays we're lucky to see half a metre squared at most places....

I think that, as far as Generations goes, it's a sign that it's a better toy line (and thus a stronger seller). And IMO is evident that the quality of the toys matters more than the quality or even existence of accompanying media.

Despite all the money poured into ROTF, many of those toys languished on shelves. Generations (and Classicsverse in general) has no widely available accompanying media, yet they've generally been strong sellers. I think it's also indicative that kids aren't stupid and know quality when they see it. The same held true for us when we were kids, e.g. Wheelie was an awful pegwarmer despite his appearances in the cartoon, comics & storybook. Hubcap on the other hand seemed to sell better despite having zero canonical appearance (and also being "just a redeco" of Cliffjumper whereas Wheelie offered a whole new mould).

Oh, and also because the current lines don't have nearly as many Bumblebees. ;)

I think it's just an indication of how well Hasbro sales reps are able to sell a volume of product to the retail chain buyers.

with the wind in their sales from the first transformers movie they would have romped it in getting extra shelf space for Transformers.

They really need to bring back transformable plushies. Grimlock would have been a good successor to Softimus Prime and Slumblebee.

I bought a bunch of plush Optimus and Bumblebee plush toys to give to friends when they had babies. Kept two for myself for *ahem* future scenarios ;)

They're baby friendly with no small parts and soft like felt. A decent size too at about 18".

Google "Universal Studios Transformers plush optimus". You can usually pick them up on ebay.

So walked into work today and spotted some new Legends class figures on the shelf. I looked through them and found a couple of Shockwave's which I already had from BBTS, then I found Wreck-gar. At that point I was completely stuck trying to remember if I had him or not, I really couldn't think if I had this particular repaint of the Groove mould. Obviously he is must have buy if I can't even remember if I own him or not.

Oh and turns out I didn't have him, so it's a good thing I bought him, but I kept the receipt just in case I had to return him.

I always err on the side of caution and buy a figure if I'm unsure whether I already have it or not. I've learnt that lesson the hard way in the past. :p

And like you said, if you keep the receipt then its easy enough to return it.

Filled another tub today with transformers and did some rearranging to make room on my shelves for future purchases. It looks a little bare at the moment, however I am torn between feelings of disappointment that I don't have room to display them all, and feelings of elation of what the displays will look like once they are filled.

I can't bring myself to sell the ones in storage (in closet), but hopefully one day I may have room to display them all. I would say I could rotate them, but realistically it's more likely another tub will join the rest in storage one day soon.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Neil Kaplan (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Neil_Kaplan) is the voice of Zarkon (http://voltron.wikia.com/wiki/Zarkon) in the upcoming Voltron Legendary Defender (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChXy1Qtv9TE). Kaplan was, of course, the dub voice for RiD Optimus Prime, and Peter Cullen was part of the dub cast of the original Voltron series (narrator, Commander Hawkins, Coran, King Alfor).

Not really. I refuse to keep my Transformers in storage unless I have to. And right now I have to because we're going to be moving next month. :o It sucks not having all my toys out, but we're moving to a bigger place with a bigger room for my TFs. :D

Finished packing away all of my Transformers now (only took me 22 days ). Since I've been going in reverse chronological order, today I packed away the first 3 years' of G1... and it took me much longer than I thought. Unlike packing away most of the other years, in packing away early G1 I was also packing away a lot of reissues. And this made me realise that HasTak have reissued a lot (approx. 83%!) when it comes to early G1.

I asked them to hold off on my Pile of Loot because I like to have loot hit around $900 AUD before shipping and the Combaticons were just about to hit (and would have fit quite easily within the dollar limit). However, BBTS said they couldn't hold off on the order and it would automatically ship at 180 days.

If you can still find them anywhere read The Keepers trilogy based on the Dreamwave comics. They are far far better. Heck, even the likes of Viewfinder & Spectro get more character development than most of the big names from the Aligned novels
