Having first made his appearance here (http://otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=6712) this custom has gone through a fair few revisions.

The 'worst' thing really is the rubbery plastic won't hold paint - also, wanting to make him chromey, the spray chrome isn't really....henkeiriffic for lack of a better term - so I sat down at work and at home during some free time and used Hasegawa's Mirror Finish (http://www.hlj.com/product/HSGTF1) stuff and started chroming this sucker up...

So... I suppose this is a bit of a teaser...

I really like how the chrome's turned out so far though :)

How's that chrome stuff going? How are you handling the wrinkles?

That mirror finish stuff looks great. Might have to get me some of that.

Lint & 5FDP : Thanks guys! :)

gamblor : ugh - the creases - annoying as - for some of them I've managed to do it by piecing together small pieces that overlap slightly - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't - but unless you're looking really closely - it's not as noticeable cause you're mainly just blinded by the bling! :D For the most part though, I'm cutting little triangles and placing them on using ... the naginata from the kotobukiya weapon parts ... :b it's a nice item to work with! the sharp points help me mould the foil to the crevices of the plastic, and make the little holes on the pipes etc - I think this is best illustrated in the following pix:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y17/lcz128_photos/Transformers/IMG_0009.jpg
this was how it looked before ape extra chrome...

And these are where the crazy began:

Yeah - I went all out with the chroming - made the gold bits gold, too! :b

Lemme know what you think peeps - I have to still do bits in Robot mode though :)

That said, I like how bling'd up he looks! Really loving this chrome stuff, but damn it takes a while :(

Looking good. The chrome really makes it pop!

Yeah I think the Hasegawa stuff is one of the best but it's still tricky to use sometimes.

Totally! That's some awesome stuff. I am really impressed with the foil stuff. I haven't used that bare metal stuff u used but I only just saw it at my local hobby store so I might try that out too! What do you think of it mr gamblor?

gamblor916
5th February 2010, 08:59 PM
I think bare metal is good but its not sticky enough. It's very thin though and can be buffed out to make it shine and get rid of wrinkles.

Wow, u can buff it?
Damn. I think I read that if you use a cotton bud to 'apply' the foil for that bare metal stuff it turns out great. I have the link on my lappy somewhere, wil have to find it.

I look forward to trying it out as well!
That said, this experience with this mirror finish stuff has been quite good and I feel like revisiting some of my older customs to properly henkeify them!!!!

So, here we are. Spent a bit more time at work during the quiet periods and added bling to good ol' Rockdown.
No time really to do anything fancy with formattig as I have to do this via iPhone and not on my comp. Time restraints really. Can't look productive on an iPhone at work, can I? Heh

1orion2many: Thanks man :) Where did you mean when you said bling his
face up? YOu mean the silver bits?

gamblor: I totally reckon that the bling makes a huge, huge difference
- now he fits in even more with his tacky blinged up henkei-mates :b

rampagesss : Thanks man :)

I really do like him a helluva lot more now that he is bling'ed up :)

Kinda confuses my eyes even now sometimes when I look at him!

That's not a bad thing though :D

I've added even more bling and some additional little accents here and
there to liven him up even more... also painted some more gun metal to
tone down the silver in other sections...

Do let me know what you think! :D

Do want!

That's an awesome job, all that bling works really well with it.
It almost looks like a lucky draw item.

hey lcz128,

love what you've done - its made me want to try it too.

I just bought lockdown today for $12 :D and really did not like the paint. was thinking of painting it completely black and appying chrome to it.

about the mirror finish you linked at HLJ - its a sticky sheet that you peel and apply to the parts you want to be shiny?

also how many did you need to buy?

thanks.

I stayed away from some of the Henkei stuff cos I disliked the chrome and generally, I dislike chrome (which explains me staying away from Z Gundam Hyaku Shiki 1/144 model kit cos the normal release is chromed) but the work you have done on Rockdown is awesome! Great stuff, especially his bot mode.

Oh damn - sorry i haven't ventured into here much at all of late! Sorry!

Yep it's that sticky sheets - http://www.hlj.com/product/HSGTF1 There it is! You really just need to use one sheet - there's heaps to use and you won't use all of it by the time you're done with your lockdown (:

And thanks everyone else! :)

I haven't been TF customising in a while but will be back in some time :D

no problem, i had a look at loophole's thread and will probably follow his method with the chroming pen he used as it seems a lot easier for things that arent flat surfaces.

loophole is awesome! :D
That said, chroming pen will NOT give you a mirror-reflective finish like these sheets will. Just a word of warning that the finish will be vastly different! :)

I realised that, how did you get the mirror finish applied to the engine so nicely?

That looks really good!! Was going to buy a clear animated Lockdown and trim his bumper, spoiler, wheel rims etc with gold paint but i suck at painting. Is gold trim the way to go and is it easy to work with.
