I was going to, but then went to red rooster instead. I really regretted it :( Tonight was a shit dinner :( First world problems.

Just when you thought Pizza Hut couldn't get more creative than their cheese stuffed crust, their hotdog stuffed crust, or their cheeseburger (meatball) crust pizzas, now they have Doritos corn chip encrusted pizza crust.
Yes, a pizza with corn chips sticking out of its crust like spines on an echidna.
I don't think it sounds very tasty, but probably looks interesting.
And KFC have their zinger pies back. They are nice, but expensive.
A freind slaughtered a goat and gave us half. I spend 4 1/2 hours roasting a leg-of-goat since it has to be done slow and with moisture. Wa good but very gamey. My wife made the leftovers into a shepherds pie, again good buy gamey. I can see why goat is not one of the most popular meats out there - i think it will be a few weeks before I use some of the diced stuff to make a curry.
Did I mention prawn toast :p :D:D
Goat is nice in an Indian curry.
I found an Indian place last year on the Sunshine Coast that had Goat on the menu, so I had to try it... and it was really nice and tender. I couldn't taste the Goat though with all the curry, but I liked it enough to have it again and recommend it (if it is cooked long enough).
Well we've had the wife's rellies here for an early Xmas for 4 days and my wife's brother in law is a dab hand with goat, so we did about a kilo of the diced goat as a modified Masala. One of the best curries I've ever had in my life! Cooked it for hours and when finally ready it was so succulent and tasty - the guy said that it was about the best goat meat he's ever worked with too so goes to show getting it straight from the farm pays off.
Simarly, my brother slaughtered a sheep for us and I got the butcher to leave one of the lamb leg roasts whole - so big it barely fit in the oven! But slow roasted it with some rosemary and garlic from our garden and by the end it was just falling off the bone - damn good!
Loving having all these contacts that grow and slaughter their own animals - I just trade them for copious amounts of the veges, herbs and fruit I grow and everyone wins. Nothing beats fresh produce ;)
I have to stop reading this thread ... but can't. I've got a one and half weeks to lose 5kg to reach my goal weight. And there's Christmas in between. :o
In honour of the start of the repeats of Man Vs Food on Channel 73 tonight (showcasing super-sized foods), this was a super-sized burger chain I found in Toowoomba over Christmas that I wanted to mention.
It's unfortunate that they are still just based in Toowoomba (three stores, but all locally sourced meats and veges), but as much as I'd like to see them in places like Brisbane, I think I'd dread it, as they are VERY delicious.
The franchise is called Phatburgers, and they make burgers in three sizes... a regular "ladies" size, a large "man" size, and the one-off "Burghoffer" - a $22 burger, weighing in at almost a Kilo (mine was 812 grams), which is 2-3 times the size of a Whopper (or about four times the size of a Big Mac).

I was in Toowoomba from the 24th to 26th of December, and I didn't know about this franchise until I got there and saw the CBD store near the hotel I was staying at. Unfortunately, it was already closed for the long weekend, and had signage saying that said it wouldn't be open before I left... but did say that the Northern store was open on the 26th, so I decided to stop there on my way out of the city.
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c362.jpg
I grabbed a menu from that holder next to the door of the CBD store in the photo above, and I was just salivating at all the delicious and creative options (website here for the menu).
It was a long two days waiting for that chance... :p
So on the morning of the 26th, I leave the hotel and head for the Northern store. I knew that I wanted to see what the $22 burger was like, but I had to restrain myself on what else to buy. As much as I wanted to sample everything because it might be a while until I have another chance, I didn't want to be bringing home bags of burgers that would have to sit in the fridge for a few days until they are eaten (which wouldn't be as nice and fresh).
I couldn't decide on which two to buy with the big burger, so told the person in the store to make two of the more popular ones.
I ended up with these three...
- The Burghoffer ($22), a quarter kilo of garlic seasoned beef, grilled onions, tomato, lettuce, beetroot relish, lemon mayo, horseradish and BBQ sauce.
- Morning Glory ($14), 120gm of beef, bacon, egg, tomato, grilled onion, lettuce, BBQ sauce.
- Redneck ($15), thyme seasoned beef, crunchy bacon bits, egg, pineapple, tomato, beetroot relish, lettuce, BBQ sauce and lemon mayo.
(the two smaller ones ended up being very similar, with bacon, lettuce, tomato, egg and BBQ sauce on both... so I can't even remember which was which)

The $22 burger was massive, but the regular ones were bigger than Whoppers.
This was the Redneck burger.

This was the Morning Glory burger.

And the Burghoffer.
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c382.jpg
The plan was to take all three back home with me as I didn't want to be driving too full... and I wanted to weigh the Burghoffer, so I took those photos at the store, and decided to just take a bite of the two smaller ones to see what they were like fresh then pack them back up.
Unfortunately, I tried one of the smaller burgers first (can't remember which one), and it was just SO delicious, I couldn't stop. I sat there and ate the whole thing. :o
It was almost midday and I didn't have any breakfast yet, but I wasn't planning to eat as much yet.
I took the other two home and had the larger one mid-afternoon, and the remaining smaller one in the evening. (each with a bit of microwave reheating)
Despite a bit of fridge cooling and reheating, they were both just as delicious as if they were fresh.
So if anyone is visiting Toowoomba, they are very recommended. And if the franchise ends up venturing out of that city, I think they will be very popular.
(and if anyone is coming to Brisbane from Toowoomba... I'd be very keen to place an order if you are willing and able - I know they'd be a couple hours old, but they are THAT good. :o :D )
Wow do they look super tastey. I can feel my mouth salivating :(
Phat burgers. Ewwwww. :p
My local Chinese restaurant is closed for renovations until early Feb. No prawn toast for about 3 weeks :(
For anyone who has a partner or kids that don't like pork, I highly recommend the following recipe for Pickled Pork with Cabbage and Mustard Sauce. My toddler barely tolerates prok and my wife doesn't like it at all and they both gobbled this down! Do the sauce as well as it's really nice and well worth the extra effort :)
http://www.aww.com.au/food/recipes/2...mustard-sauce/
And yeah, I know it's a Womens Weekly recipe but they way I figure it most women in the world are smarter and better cooks than I so I would be a fool not to follow their advice ;)
went to subway on sunday, and oporto's and well this happened

pretty much the best one ive ever had.
^ Yum!
That's a good idea....
Cadbury are reducing the size of their chocolate blocks again.
A couple years ago they quietly reduced it from 250gms to 200gms to avoid raising the price (inflation hits everything, so either the price rises or the size is reduced to maintain a price-point)... then they did a big promotional campaign to increase the size from 200gms to 220gms to make out it was a bonus increase.
Now they are dropping it back to the 200gms again to avoid raising the wholesale/retail price, but where is it going to stop?
At some point inflation must take over and products can't shrink any further.
At that point some Brands have been known to introduce a "new" larger size at a higher price that is the same size as what they used to release years ago, and phase out the "old" smaller size.
With Brands like Cadbury though, people are buying it because of the Brand not the price, so this will probably not make much difference to their sales. If people were buying chocolate because of price instead of taste, there are other brands including generics that are cheaper.
(the one good thing is that when it is a small reduction, it cuts a little junk and calories from the diet... but if it shrinks too much, people will buy a second and end up eating more junk)
Chips are the worst offender for that. Recently Twisties, Burger Rings and Cheetos all dropped their package sizes. Shapes too introduced a few new flavours in new packaging to pretend like it's premium, with something like 115g. The other day in IGA i saw Red Rock chips "on special" for $4.78. I think it was 165 or 175 grams... I think they were always that size but for that price they can stay on the shelf!
So KFC is doing 24 nuggets for $10. And will put it in a large combo, pushing the price up to $15.
Guess who just polished it off and is now hating himself?
This guy.
The Streetwise Feast is a big/bad temptation with nice variety... and probably the best value meal item on the menu, with the individual items costing about $38, but only costs $20.
For those in Melbourne, or will be in the next few months, the chef staff of the award-winning Fat Duck Restaurant by Heston Blumenthal is in Melbourne for about six months while the Restaurant in Europe is being renovated.
They only have one item on the menu... the "tasting menu" for $545.... but looks to give a sample of many of his imaginative creations.
I wouldn't mind sampling some of the items, but not all of the... or pay that much just for a single meal.
Scratch that... looks like the six month limited time has already been fully booked out.
Speaking of Heston... a weekly TV show of his has been showing on SBS on Thursday nights, which he shows off some of his amazing creations, plus super-sizing certain food items each episode.
For those in the SE QLD area, the Japanese MOS Burger chain is having its 43rd Birthday tomorrow, and this week they have a special meal deal that includes their
two main burgers, for about half the price of the items bought separately.
Their founding year compares to 1953 for Burger King and 1940 for Mcdonalds... and unfortunately they still only have 5 outlets in Australia, and they are all in Brisbane-Gold Coast.

Which ends up looking like this...
(with a Kimchi Pork rice-burger at the back)
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c555.jpg
Their burgers are nice, but not spectacular, but I like them, and their variety of unsual burgers.
The Cranberry tea was a bit weird though... but healthier than soft drink, so can't complain there.
Ah bugger I missed this, was going to go Garden City or sunnybank last night, but decided to go to the city tonight. Have mos burger on my mind but didnt know about this. I like their gourmet wagyu cheesburger, my wife is also a fan of the rice bunned(?) burgers. But yeah, cranberry iced tea, i tried it once, not again.
But oh well since I'm alone tonight might get some korean chilli cheese chicken. There's a korean fried checken place in albert street (edit: called hosaku), another block south of timezone. The decision is always take the bike for free parking... Or take the train and hit the sujo.
I like that dish, I'm lactose intolerant but it's worth it.
I saw these new things at Woolies today, where they sell their Kangaroo meat...
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c561.jpg
A bit expensive, but something I want to eventually try, so hopefully they have them on sale at some point.
Both Coles and Woolies have been selling Kangaroo for at least a decade, and Coles have been selling Camel burgers for about a year, so this is an
interesting expansion of alternative meats at the major retailers.
Another couple of WTF food items I've seen and tried.
Cadbury Vegemite Chocolate.
I saw this on the news a few weeks back and finally saw it in store last week.
With the latest fad being "Salted Caramel" everything, this actually isn't that bizarre, but I think the thought of Vegemite and Chocolate will put people off trying it or "blind tasting" it without prejudice.
I thought it tasted like Salted Caramel, with a bit of the familiar Vegemite taste in the background, so didn't find it repulsive... but I'm not a fan of the Salted Caramel fad or flavour, so didn't enjoy it enough to buy it again.
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c820.jpg
For something more disgusting, but just as WTF...
First it was cheese in the crust, then it was hotdogs, then cheeseburgers... and now we have the latest Pizza Hut Crust fusion - mini meat pies.
The mini-pies were terrible, like something you'd find as a generic brand, and needed more sauce than I had available to eat them.
Not recommended, unless you want to be able to say that you tried something as bizarre as this.
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c819.jpg
Have you had a crack at the create a burger at Mcdonalds yet Griffin?
It's a bit of a scam how the meal is a $4.50 upgrade, seemingly only because the chips now come in an aluminium basket (serving looks about Regular size to me).
Nah, I don't do McDonalds.
But I think I've exhausted my ideas for creating customised burgers at HJs, with a number of cringe-worthy monstrosities. :p
Haha can i ask why no Macca's? One time our office accountant went on a rant about HJ's being so much better than McDonalds which struck me as quite odd, considering they're both about as bad as each other (health-wise). I said if you're gonna be a burger connoisseur what are you doing at a fast food chain in the first place :D
I tried the custom thing the other day but wasn't too pleased with my creation. I just wanted a simple Angus pattie with the Big Mac sauce and a few other things. But i chose the french style bun which overpowered the rest of the flavours completely :(
Certainly mine was tame compared to a few other people ordering burgers that would be lucky to make it to the table before tipping over!
The only advantage I see to the custom burger thing at Maccas is getting a Big Mac on a big bun. Gonna try that :D
I did have a slight preference for HJs at the time, but I didn't reject one for the other.
In mid-2000, after coming home from BotCon feeling really bad from a last meal of McDonalds just before I hopped on the plane (I "sampled" several items on their menu that we don't have here and had to drink a lot of water to deal with the thirst of all the food/bread, so after almost 20 hours sitting in one spot on 3 planes, I had really bad water retention in the lower legs that took a week to go away), so I used it as an opportunity to see just how long I could go without that particular franchise (I had HJs to fall back on if I had burger cravings)... and 15 years later I haven't been back to buy any of their food because I'm too stubborn to break the record.
It's also a reason why I don't stuff myself before a longhaul flight anymore, and wear compression socks. The fluid retention was so bad that year that I could poke a finger into the side of my leg about half a centimetre, and the dimple would stay there like playdoh, which freaked me out enough to cut out my biggest source of junk food at the time.
Struth! They don't make 1kg steaks like they used to! I popped that like a malteaser
Next time I come back to this restaurant I'll see if they will stack one on top of the other :D
