Yes, the series is mostly a self contained story that stands very well on it's own. Recently I loaned my Wreckers comic to a friend who had never read any TF comics before and he enjoyed it.

I started with Spotlight before going on to The Last Stand of the Wreckers and I haven't even read the orginial Marvel series yet. And I find them awesome.
My readings are quite random and that I've got used to, so it doesn't really bother me when there are references to background characters/stories unknown to me, because as long as I keep reading (no matter the order) in the end every piece of jigsaw automatically fit together.
Go for it; that's one awesome book. I love it.
You've actually read transformers fiction so you have plenty of background. Things will be different in the IDW universe but like Kup said its a stand-alone story. You do get more out of it if you're familiar with the G1.5 toys :)
Highly recommended, in fact it should go into some national archive!
Thanks for the feedback guys! I guess I am just being cautious... it's not like comics retail for $1 anymore :o Hopefully I can still find a copy at my local Target.
I got a LSOTW at Target few months back. I am much in the same boat as I havnt read a comic in decades but wanted to get in them again. Unfortunately I have only read the first few pages:o
I just dont have time in my hectic life !!!LOL.................Does make a good display piece though.
I picked up LSOTW from Target today and I haven't read any comics since I was a kid, so I'm pleased to read that it won't matter.
