My girlfriend has often asked me what I intend to do with my collection when I pass on. I have no idea and was wondering if anyone else has thought about this?
Sorry for the morbid topic but it's something I can't wrap my brain around.

Buried with them like a giant egyptian mausoleum, so that I can take them to the afterlife with me. :p
And so that the vultures don't go picking over my 'corpse' of a collection. ;)
Seriously though, I have left instructions with relatives and friends as to what happens to collection, so maybe have detailed instructions in your will as you would for any of your other assets... as in who they go to, or how they are sold so that your family gets an asset they can better use (money).
You should specifically mention them in your will and testament, which is free by the way if you nominate the public trustee. Everyone should have a will.
If they are truly "rare", eg diaclone or g1 misb, then you might want to consider donating to a toy museum, or having them auctioned professionally so that your family will receive actual payment and it still goes to a collectors who will treat them well and cherish
I've never given it a lot of thought, but once I'm gone I probably won't care so much. I imagine my wife would give my collector friends a chance to look through, maybe the kids/grandkids, depending how long I hang around for and then sell a lot.
Assuming I'm here for another 50 years or so, the whole collection will be museum material by then.
My collection is going to my two children. They can do with them as they wish.
My kids have great fun 'shopping' for what toys of mine they'll take when I kick the bucket.
I would do that. I can even think of a good location on where I will set up my tomb in order to keep away grave robbers. Hopefully some evolved Ape archaeologist will find it in the future and put me and my collection in a Museum for everyone to see and enjoy. Everything would be vacuum sealed of course, otherwise the plastic would not last.
Who knows, maybe the finding could start a religion or something ;):p
I want them melted down and made into a coffin for me.
In reality, sell those suckers!
Some great ideas. Might donate them to a museum or pass them onto OTCA as I know they will be well loved.
Families not really a consideration as I intend to have them buried with me when I go. Who's laughing now?
Errrr, why the hell is there a topic about us dying? :/
It's not about us dying. It's about what to do with our collections. I know it's morbid and not very nice but I'm curious as to what people intend to do with them.
funny this conversation popped up last week between my kids (6 and 5) as they happily talked about inheriting the XBOX360 from me once I'd passed on - to which my wife said 'No. It goes to me first' so they'd have to wait until she died before they could have it - but no, mummy dying was such a horrible idea they didn't ever want that to happen.
go me.
I'll take donations of Thundercracker toys and we'll melt them into a blue coffin for you.
They'll be put on display next to me in the family vault!
Mine go to my best friend, who's also a TF fan albeit not on the board. He can keep the ones he likes and sell the rest. I've told him to put them up here first.:)
I just hope he researches them first, I have most of the Euro G1/G2 cast of Last Stand of the Wreckers and a MOSC Henkei Cyclonus and he's struggled with money and taking care of a sick mother for years, so it'd be nice to think he did alright out of them.
If I ever have kids - Heaven forbid - they get first dibs.
You ain't worth that.
I'll be in heaven with the ability to summon a life sized Fort Max to take me to a hangover-free Cointreau lake featuring dainty ice cube Lilly pads, Swedish babes & a German kransky stand. You can melt them down into Frisbees for all I care. :p
Ah yes, Ive been meaning to catalog my collection while still manageable in size:o so I can easily mention it in my will. G1 not for resale, goes to my remaining family... the rest can be sold and all proceeds to my remaining family. they could use the money better than toys. the unsold ones can go to my nephews or their kids if they're too old (gasp:eek:) by then.
Lots of MISB and MIB for sale... money goes to family
pretty much same here, most will be sold and the rest my boys can decide what to do
I haven't put much thought into this but a few years back my kids asked who would get my collection when I'm dead, They're all heart:rolleyes::D
For me it's a no brainer- they're going to a museum. In fact in a few years, I plan on investigating how to have them owned by a trust and on loan to a museum but tied up in so many layers of red tape, that neither the trust nor the museum could ever sell them off.
