G1 season 3 suitability for my 5 yr old

Just after some info on those who have seen S3 onwards. I didn't as a kid and am currently nearing the end of the S2 run with my boy

At his age I'm skipping the 86 movie; he has a pretty strong attachment to prime and ironhide. I'm not going to sugar coat the world for him too much as he grows but I'm pretty reticent to have him see a parental type figure killed on his fave cartoon

In any case, what's season 3 like? Are there many references to the dead autobots? How is primes resurrection handled etc?

Dark Awakening, an episode set on the Autobot's graveyard complete with dead robot bodies falling out of coffins, and zombie Optimus might be a bit much. And there's several episodes where Starscream's ghost is the villain. Optimus' second resurrection is easier. You see him "die" at the start (heroic sacrifice and not as bad/obvious as TFTM) and then he comes back within 10 mins or so.

Otherwise it doesn't come up too much, apart from Rodimus living in the shadow of a great former leader. But is set in the future so there's new people in the jobs the characters he knows used to do.

But I don't have kids so can't give a full answer. I also don't think much of the season overall so it's been a long time since I watched it.

My daughter's seen G1 eps since birth. ;) Before she knew what death was, I used to explain it as "hurting," so when she saw Optimus Prime being killed off, I told her that he was in a lot of pain and couldn't get up. :p Now whenever she hears the "Death of Optimus Prime" music she refers to it as "Optimus Prime's hurt" music. ;)

Rescue Bots is a great cartoon for young kids. No violence but still has reasonably good stories (considering the target audience) -- character developments and complication-resolutions. :)

I don't have kids, so I'll pass judgement on if it's ok or not but remember Flint Dilles commentary about the kid who locked himself in his bedroom after tftm.

There aren't any deaths, it's just a slaggin' awful episode! :p

from my childhood, all I can remember is Springer riding Razorclaw with Razor mocking, "Careful Springer".

Well , that's because the smartest autobot there ( Perceptor) doesn't know medical cybertronics, there was no medic since ratchet got killed along with the rest of the '84 crew. He's a scientist not a medic, so basically all he can do is first aid - which I didn't even see him doing so. :DSO yeah he's pretty much useless hehe.

Yeah S3 is kinda boring , not much episodes to be of worth remembering. Prolly wait about 2 years more....

Dark Awakening is the S3 episode I remember most vividly from childhood. In fact, it's the only S3 episode I remember from childhood. It definitely affected me and stuck with me, seeing Optimus dying again, his scary appearance (mainly the facial damage), and seeing the mausoleum and seeing a reminder that my favourites were dead.

I had seen the movie so knew they had died, and that had really upset me. This was upsetting all over again, and obviously made some kind of impression on me, being that it's the only s3 episode I remember from childhood.

Shame there aren't any deaths in that episode:p

Before I showed my son Transformers: The Movie I spoiled it for him but explained straight after we were going to watch "The return of Optimus Prime" so it's ok. I found that was the best way because he got to watch the movie and then watched season 3 (except for dark awakening and a few others that aren't scary but are just dreadful) as he knew it was going be ok in the end.

Don't shield him. Death is a part of life and everyone must face it at some point in their lives by seeing someone close die. Sometimes it happens when you are young and sometimes when you are old, you never know.

Probably best for him to be partially prepared for its existence in a 'make believe' cartoon form than knowing about it first hand in the unfortunate event of a loved one passing.

My daughter is 5, and she watched the 86 movie with no ill effects.
She has also seen most of s3 as well.

And I'd like to point out that B.O.T. from s2 is worse than anything from s3.

Interesting. Would you allow a child to watch porn or a show with graphic sex scenes because sex is also a very important part of life?

I quite liked Webworld, most of Call of the Primatives, Starscreams Ghost and a couple of others. At least it wasn't Season 4 (Roger Doger Optimus Prime!:mad: )

Different things work for different kids. Parents are best to judge whether they think a show is suitable for their individual child or not. Some kids can watch this stuff without getting phased, others not so much. Best thing to do is to watch the material first and consider whether or not it's suitable for your child. Of course when it comes to G1, we've all watched it thousands of times so... heh. :D

Not really. They go hand in hand. We reproduce to ensure survival of our species because we are mortal. What would you do if you showed your son TFTM and explained that everyone dies and so he asks what happens when all the humans die? Do you tell him about sex and reproduction? Or do you make up some story because you want to shield him?

That is the best answer right there. Each parent knows what will work best for their child. Myself having an overly anxious, inquisitive, highly emotional ADHD child knew that the best way to deal the situation and Optimus Prime's death would be to reassure him that things will be ok.

There is a difference between teaching about reproduction and porn (which isn't interested in reproduction for the most part).

Being that the boy is 5yo, watching the movie may be a bit much. But I do agree with kup that death is a fact of life. I vividly remember watching the movie for the first time when I was 8 & crying my eyes when Optimus died. It taught me that heroes do fall and that there is no such thing as a hollywood ending. But it also taught me that he went out fighting for what he believed in and that you should never give up.

Back to topic, the season openers (five faces of darkness 1-5) aint bad as it does lay down some ground work and some new characters like Metroplex, Trypticon, Sky Lynx & the Predacons. Another good episode is Chaos. :)

See, I was just suggesting passing on S3 because the absence of Optimus is pretty noticeable after all the screen time he gets in S1 and S2, and if you're not willing to show your son the Movie yet then he's probably just gonna ask where Optimus is anyway.

I do think we have things wrong, and that the European model is the correct way of thinking.

I believe nudity should be more acceptable than violence, whereas for us it's the absolute opposite.

Graphic violence? Go for it.

Edit: Was checking io9 and saw this article which helps with my view. I should note though the I haven't seen the film in question. In America it got an R Rating, in Canada it got a G.

It's explained why, and one of the reasons is something that resonates with my view in general: the movie contains nudity, but it's apparently just stuff like people showering, something the Canadian board considered fine for kids to see, as it's non-sexual and a daily activity.

Really shows the stark difference in how we view certain things.

I accept that and certainly not trying to 'shield him'. I like to think I have some understanding of human development and psychological processes that we all go through in response to positive and negative events (we'll id better, it's my job! Hehe)

I already made a decision to not expose him to a beloved characters death at this time. We will go down that track later when he's ready.

I remember going to see the South Park movie back when I was at uni. The quote from Kyles mum 'Graphic Deplorable Violence is ok, so long as nobody says any naughty words!'.

Why graphic violence is less fretted over by parents than bad language and nudity is kinda silly. If you go to the Melbourne Museum, upstairs they have in full view of the million school groups that go through there giant naked people of all walks of life on the walls because it is natural.

That said, I have been at hippy festivals wandering around naked and detoured when I've seen a child coming the other way, even when the child and their parents are naked as well so I guess I'm a bit of a hypocrite. Also I wouldn't let my children see pornography. Naked people in biology or science classes I have no issue with.

Another potential source of info would be TFWiki or Wikipedia, they should both have a pretty good synopsis of each episode to give you a good idea of what to expect.

Or is this just about being exposed to me UM? Because if so I can assure you that back in the day I was a thing of beauty to behold! :D Now a decade later of course my 6-pack has become a keg so except for the odd staff party the clothes stay on. ;)

But that's the thing about hippie festivals, for every naked person who by conventional standards is attractive, there will be one that is considered not so. The whole point is to be chilled out about it and accept that it is a natural part of life. I sit in the bath with my 10 month old son each night and we are both naked while my wife helps wash him and there is not a thing wrong with it. But, like I mentioned earlier, I am a bit of a hypocrite as when at these hippy festivals I didn't want any kids seeing my skittles and flute, no matter how many other nudey folk were about.

..........and we ended up at skittles :)

My 4 year old son was watching the end of the second season of TFPrime today and he started crying and became distressed because Bumblebee died. It was the cutest thing ever.

So to console him, I told him it's okay, he comes back to life.

Of course, shortly after, Megatron gets killed. So the tears came again. So then I had to explain that he had to be stopped because he kept hurting people.

Maybe that series is a bit grown up for him yet...
