If Prime hadn't dropped it, and Ultra Magnus touched it first, would he have eventually become Ultra Prime, or whatever? Or, phrase another way, did Hot Rod only becomes Rodimus Prime because he touched it first?
Or was it more about destiny and even if Hot Rod hadn't touched it first, he still would have lit their darkest hour?
Just like in Harry Potter, there was a prophecy that could have related to two young boys... and one was choosen by events that passed to be the true "choosen one"
so here are all the TF's, and one event, the dropping, defines the chosen one...
I think the influence of the touch could have been both ways. Maybe in the couple of seconds the touch lasted, the power of the Matrix already affected Hot Rod's character and the future actions he was to take.
This would mean that not only is that little f***er responsibile for the death of Optimus, but for the death of Magnus too! :D
I would say its a bit of both. Because when he catches the matrix there is the whole flasing lights and epic music which make you think he is more important then he seems.
But i would say he was only the chosen one because he was able to light the darkest hour, so he just got lucky just imagine what would have happened if wheelie had opened the matrix and became the chosen one :p

...seriously, they needed a damn good reason to plug the Rodimus Prime toy - it's a crap toy (even by 1986 standards)! Ultra Magnus was a much, much more awesome toy for that year (even though it was designed years earlier as part of Diaclone) and intuitively made more sense as the next leader (since he was pretty much the same mould as Optimus Prime, but with a super mode/apex armour!).
Heck, Hot Rod is a better toy than Rodimus Prime.
When I saw the movie for the first time I assumed that the only reason Hot Rod became Rodimus Prime was because he touched the Matrix first. Why would Optimus not simply pass the Matrix to Hot Rod if he was the chosen one? One could argue he simply didn't know, but I prefer to think this way anyway, makes Hot Rod seem less credible. :p
Everytime I've watched TFTM, I have believed that Prime didn't know Hot Rod was the chosen one from the prophecy he was talking about. However the Matrix, with it's collective wisdom and all that, recognised Hot Rod by his touch and so glowed brightly in his hands. None of the other Autobots noticed this as anything special, probably still in awe of seeing the Matrix for the first time. Nor were they concerned that the Matrix appeared to reject Magnus straight away by trying to jump out of his chest and had to be forced back in.
I believe that he was the chosen one but I'm a bit biased simply because I loved Hot Rod and couldn’t believe that it was simply because he got lucky and touched it first.:)

Not I. I think one of the particular features that I enjoyed post TFTM was the structure of the cast. The cast actually meant something with specific roles. Granted not all the stories were that great but I liked Magnus as the ever so capable 2nd in command. Inspiring, brave and compassionate yet not able to lead. It makes him unique in that sense as most with those qualities lead. Instead he faithfully serves Rodimus.Quote:

I think if Ultra Magnus decided not to try and use the Matrix on the planet of Junk, and didn't get blasted (why he decided to simply say "Never!" to Galvatron instead of whipping out his gun and trying to blast him is something I still don't get) to bits, he may have been the one to unleash the Matrix inside Unicron.
But I also think Ultra Magnus has the whole "I am stressed" thing with it comes to leadership and taking charge of the overall situation.
