From what I remember Optimus came back twice in the G1 cartoon

And for that reason, the death of an Optimus has basically become meaningless in TF lore. They even poked fun at this in Beast Wars when Megatron once said, "You Optimuses do love to sacrifice yourselves, don't you?"
