I'll probably join next week. I don't want to join while they're all on holidays and then not get my membership processed and blahblahblah.

You'll have to join before then... if the pre-order for Runabout is expected to sell out within a day or two like Ramjet & Punch, you'd be best to join before the pre-orders in January. And joining before the pre-order is made (instead of with the pre-order) will prevent any technical glitches that will may occur by doing both at the same time.
