I was thinking that too. The Russian thing happened just before 6pm (here) and the morning news had this guy talking about a lump of rock passing closer to the earth than some of the satellites we have in orbit. I was thinking that maybe it pulled a few fragments through with it, which were less mass, to be caught by our gravity (while the main lump of rock had enough momentum to keep going past).
