I'm pretty sure the "official" names that most of us know planes by are designated by NATO. I have been a plane buff for many years and have served with some of the aforementioned aircraft and one that has seemed to have always had two names was the A10, both Thunderbolt II which an earlier aircraft the P47 had (Thunderbolt) and the Warthog.

I'm no pilot so I guess I'll have to settle for this:

Lamborghini has totally replaced Ferrari as my favorite Italian car manufacture in recent years. Just awesome!

same for me, it is somehow in a upper class in styling. But I do admit Farrari is improving too.

    A Crossover Pretender-slash-Triple Changer.

*The first alt mode resembles the cartoon character Super Hero (created by the fantastic Stan Lee): Stripperella
*The second alt mode resembles her motorcycle (which can already alter its form) from the cartoon
*The primary mode? Who cares! Would be having too much fun with the alt- modes

(Can anyone tell a mate gave me a bunch of old downloaded cartoons this weekend? )

Common English names for Russian/Chinese fighters are definitely assigned by NATO. Maybe it's changed, but I always thought the names were chosen by the manufacturer/client?

There doesn't seem to be a lot of hard information but US army helicopters, for example, are all named after Native American tribes, Republic had 'thunder', Lockheed have celestial objects (Galaxy, Constellation, Starfighter), McDonnell Douglas cargo planes were all 'master's. Of course, the US is such a big part of NATO that it wouldn't surprise me if they adopted the US names as standard.

Funny that you mentioned the helis. What we know as the Huey for example is officially named the Iroquois.

I don't think it matters that you need to know all the names though, they're mainly trivia anyway.
