I don't know why... maybe the proportions are slightly out... but the car mode to me just doesn't look like the curved "Herbie" VW beetle. Looking for some images of the real beetle car (here, here, here), the car seemed to be more rounded, like a rainbow from the windshield to the back bumper, but the MP Bumblebee has a flatter top, so it makes it look longer.
Maybe it's just an optical illusion on the full-scale car.

I think you're right on there, looks like they've taken some liberties with proportions (the MP-12 series alt-modes weren't the most accurate either). But this is one guy I'm happy to leave in bot mode.

I too am more interested in Spike in his exo-suit.

I agree. The robot mode is just too amazing to keep in bug mode. So much win.

Any reason why the wrong yellow is used?

Looks like the right yellow to me. Hate all the crappy lite yellows they keep using. Even on his reissue.

To me, the eyes look kind of small compared to the G1 cartoon

None of the MPs are dead-on likenesses with their G1 cartoon counterparts. Reasons fort his include:

    * Reality. Cartoon models cheat reality all the time, which toy designers/engineers simply cannot do IRL. Bumblebee has an additional challenge of having a robot mode based on the Penny Racer proportioned Beetle, but the MP is attempting to achieve a more realistically proportioned Beetle.
    * Vehicle accuracy vs show likeness. e.g. MP20 Wheeljack looks more toy-accurate in vehicle mode with all the Alitalia colours, decos etc. The cartoon model lacked any of this and has far simpler colours. So the toy is caught between trying to achieve vehicle accuracy in car mode and show-likeness in robot mode.

    * The G1 cartoon was far from being consistent! Shades and shapes varied wildly between different animators. It looks pretty darn close to me.
