The display unit must be lockable, but it does not need to be a safe nor does it need to be wall mounted. Mine is just a glass display cube that's is locked by a padlock.

So get a glass display cabinet with a key lock. It is a more expensive option though, getting a small display unit is the cheaper alternative.

So why does the megatron.net site say this on their Safe Storage Requirements Summary:

Display of Prohibited Firearms / Weapons

Items must be authorised by the appropriate permit to be displayed and secure so as to prevent their removal by an unauthorised person by being either of the following methods.

    * Fixed to a wall by galvanized hexagon head coach screws not less than 65mm in length and 8mm diameter, OR

    * Secured to wall mounted gun rack by plastic coated flexible steel cable (4mm minimum thickness), or chain of equivalent strength, passing through the trigger guard(s) secured to the wall at each end by expanding anchor bolts/coach screws.
If it's as simple as just having a locked box that doesn't need to be affixed anywhere, why bother having a safe storage requirement in the first place? Seeing as I can always steal the whole unit rather than crack it and take the contents.

The factsheets from the NSW cop shop site are even crazier, listing minimum weight requirements and materials for construction.

I'd like to get a similar display cube to that, only I can't find that's 32x32cm so I can put it inside my cube shelving unit.

Sure, I could just play it on top, but that might be a bit dangerous if there's an earthquake. I mean it feels heavy enough to not topple over without wall brackets, but I'd still rather have it in one of the shelving unit's cubes.

If anyone knows where I'd be able to find a 32x32cm display cube with a lock, it'd be much appreciated.

So far this is my only option, but it's 40x40cm:

Thanks GP. I've taken the 1st step and applied to be a member of the Megatron Club. I hope they're still keeping the club active. I can't wait until this whole process is over so I can relax.

Are you sure that display cube/case is acceptable? in my brief discussion with an officer you must not be able to pick it up easily and smash it to get the contents out but then my argument was what's the difference to smashing the door of a very large display unit, the answer was perception of ease of break in.

Robzy: I don't know about other states, but in NSW fictitious imitation firearms like Han Solo's blaster require a permit and safe storage compliance like Megatron. While Solo's blaster is based off a real gun, other fictitious guns which aren't but look realistic enough are also restricted. An example of this is Deckard's gun from Blade Runner; this is also prohibited in NSW despite not being directly modelled off any real life gun. But it's overall shape and colour make it look realistic to a lay person who knows nothing about guns, even with the two triggers (because if a person is pointing a gun at you in a dark alley way, you're not likely to stop and count the triggers; you're more likely to perceive it as an actual threat).

When applying for the permit you have a provide a description of your safe storage and I included a detailed description of this display cube. Considering that the NSW Police Ministry approved my application and granted me my permit, I'm assuming that they found it acceptable. I know of other people who use similar display units who've also had their permits approved too (in NSW).

One of the benefits of living in SA is not having any of this apply to you at all. It's pretty crazy, but I guess it's better to be safe than sorry. I wonder - would my Ghostbusters' neutrona wand be classified as a replica gun in NSW too? Fascinating.

Thanks for that Griff. I'm just going to fill out the online version but it requires something for the "License Number or other Lawful Authority" section. Do you know if there is a particular exemption that toy/replica guns fall under?
I have a list of all G1 characters that have been released in CHUG form. You can find it here. Please feel free to let me know if I got anything wrong so I can fix it.

I think that relates to if you already have a real handgun license, or some sort of existing special exemption. It shouldn't apply for most of us here who are just toy collectors wanting to import a single Megatron toy.

If it's going to jack up the cost of the toy then I might as well get it from another source.
