So now we've got to add re-plaster work to the long list of reno jobs.

Well 2016 really is a shithole of a year. This last week a colleague and friend from my first job out of Uni was run over trying to stop his car rolling down a hill, the funeral might be tomorrow but they are repatriating him from the US so it might not be.

I just found out one of my favorite artists died last month. Sharon Jones of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings passed away after a long battle with pancreatic Cancer. the memorial is next week

I've said this before and I'll say it again - when you're living in a country, any country - you should bloody well make an attempt to learn how to speak the local language. Aside from the blatantly obvious reasons of daily social interaction, I think that it's also a matter of respect that people should make an honest effort to understand a society's language, culture, traditions etc. You don't have to agree with it all or even like everything, but make a fair dinkum effort to understand it.

In Australia we expect immigrants to make an attempt to learn English, and I think that this is a perfectly fair and reasonably expectation. And it's really for that immigrant's benefit, because living in Australia and not learning English means that you automatically exclude and isolate yourself socially. Even if you manage to make friends and socialise within a migrant community, it's still isolated because you can't socialise outside of that ethnic ghetto. Your options are limited because you can only interact with people who speak your minority language, whereas learning the majority language allows you to freely move and interact with anyone. And some people say that it's rude or even disrespectful for people to live here and not learn English, and I think that's not an unfair call.

So similarly I think that the same standard must apply in other countries too. Living in Japan? Speak Japanese. Living in China? Speak Chinese. Living in the Philippines? Speak Tagalog. Living in the United States? Speak bad English (jokes!). Respect is a two way street; if we expect non-English speaking migrants to respect our culture and society by speaking English here or in other Anglophone countries, then we as Anglophones are obliged to also make a concerted effort to speak other countries' languages whenever any of us are living in a non-Anglophone country. It's just basic respect, doing otherwise is just downright rude.

I know someone who's been living in Hong Kong for over 5 years now and he still cannot even hold a basic conversation in Cantonese. He recently told me that he went into a store to buy a laundry marker pen and he said two words: "clothing" and "pen." That's it. Not even a sentence to try and explain the context of what he was looking for. So the shopkeeper pointed to where they sold pens and where they sold apparel. This guy just gave up and walked out of the store.

Earlier this evening I saw a lady riding past me. No lights, no helmet, not even sitting properly on the saddle (she was standing on one of the pedals) and riding on the wrong side of the road. I saw two cars that were forced to brake and manoeuvre to avoid hitting her. I repeatedly called out to this lady who ignored me and kept on riding. Thankfully she wasn't very fast and I was able to walk briskly to catch up with her (I didn't run and give the appearance that I was attacking her!). I excused myself as I approached her and tried to explain some basic road safety rules - i.e. that she needs to have lights on the front and back of her bike, wear a helmet and ride on the left side of the road. But she didn't speak a word of English and couldn't understand anything I was saying. So I gestured a lot to try and get my point across. I even tried to explain that police may issue her with a fine if they see her riding like that (although that was hard to accurately gesture). I hope she understood enough and doesn't continue to play stealthy-unhelmeted-chicken with oncoming traffic. Granted I have no idea how long this lady has been in Australia for... she may be a recent arrival.

    WE're moving on Monday.

I have a metric crap tonne of Transformers comics and Phantom Comics.

Last weekend I went to Kings to buy some comics boxes (6) so I could pack and move them all safely. they didn't have any because they had just moved themselves and they were still in a state of flux.

I had great customer service, and in the end decided that the best thing was to order them on line. it turned out that shipping 6 comic boxes from Sydney to Sydney was only going to cost $11.

they were posted Wednesday morning. I expected them to turn up today so I could pack my comics over the weekend. I've just looked at the tracking and it says Fyshwick ACT. I've called Australia post and confirmed that yes, they have sent them to the wrong address and it has been flagged and will be sent to the right address, however it will be Monday or Tuesday before they arrive.

You had one Job Australia post, one job.

Wheres my job!!! Give me a job and off bloody centrelink!

At the cinema, gal asked ticket guy for movie "y" at 1:30pm. Given different tickets to movie "z" because movie "y" is full but didn't say. Pissed. Price $12 for using member points for 2 tickets. Refunded.

Went back to ask other ticket guy for movie "y" again at 7pm. Price for 2 tickets is $38. Single ticket price is $15, doesn't explain why total is $38 and just says night movies are just more expensive and also doesn't offer to use member points.

Booked online for $15 + $3 booking fee = $18 total for 2 tickets. Saved $20 but added cost of $6 (ticket price difference + booking fee) from the original intent of watching the movie at 1:30pm.

    Just so annoyed.
