I'm one of those people who prefer to have objects physically in my hand, which is why I have avoided Steam in the past.
But last night one of my sons told me Fall of Cybertron and its expansion packs were on sale, so I weakened and joined Steam.
Purchasing was easy, then it said I had to download Steam. Fine, did that and a Steam shortcut appears on my desktop.
Double click.. "checking for available updates". After a while, "extracting package" and the window closes.
Hunky-dory, so I click on the shortcut again. And again, checking for updates.
Finished again, click again, checking and updating AGAIN!!!
And that's all it's been doing all night and morning!?!?!

Am I missing something or have I just lost my money?

I'm going to put this in the comuting/game console thread too. Any helpful advice would be welcome.

Sometime you have to authorize the program to write to the drive ,it usually because it on c drive ... do you have an antivirus on? try right clicking the icon and run as admin . Sometime they missing a small file that they don't d/l automatically and you can check that on their forums for the missing file.

But don't lose faith in steam...it a bitch to have to update all the time and in aus our internet slow but it the way game are heading , you think that was annoying...trying playing on a console that you have to update to play!! or have a dvd game disc but have to d/l 6GB to install the game!(looking at you starcraft2-heart of the swarm@!)

well i hope that help...check out their forum it pretty helpful and their response to email take around a day ...

Did you actually install the game? It sounds like you're just updating the Steam client itself. In Steam you go to your games library and FoC should be on the left side. Click on it to highlight it and press the 'install' button to the right.
Which brings us to where we are today...

I can't even open Steam. I haven't even got to my games library yet, just this frikkin updating message.
Anyway I've done some poking around - this seems to be a common issue - and found several solutions that worked for other people, so I'll give it a go tonight.
If it doesn't work, it's back to physical copies of games for me.
Origin was much easier when I bought some DLC.

What really got my blood boiling and gave me white knuckle fury? That lady that stole a 79 year old pensioners money from the ATM at Canberra today. Weak, gutless, pathetic human being. You cannot begin to understand how much it angered me watching that scum prey on the vulnerable.

Why some people are silly #1, by Sinnertwin.

-Doctor, this blood pressure medication isn't agreeing with me
-Let me write you out a prescription for something that'll ease the discomfort that you can take with your existing tablet
-Another tablet? How about you just prescribe me a different, perhaps milder BP medication?
    -Oh, lets have a look

    Nice work, Doc

I'd check how much drive space you have where you are installing steam. I've had update issues over the last week and found that I'd filled up that drive to within a few megs of completely full. Once I cleared out some stuff (a couple older games) it worked fine.

You'll want to install steam in a place where you have at least 50 GB up your sleeves, it's amazingly easy to fill up space with a steam sale. my games partition is 150GB (not far from full) and half of my steam games aren't even installed. (watch out for those steam sales )

    Thanks for the responses.

I got it working: had a list of solutions, starting with "turn it off and start again" up to reinstalling stuff. Luckily the second solution - "run as administrator" - got Steam working.... but then I had to spend most of the night waiting for the game to download.
When I got up this morning it was ready to roll... but I had to go to work!!!

I still prefer having the game in hand, though.

At the beach, taking some kick ass shots of the moon and sunset.

Put the camera on the tripod, and tripod takes a dive, camera lands lens first in the sand...

Now i have to take it to the shop to get the sand out. Dammit.
