If you're holding off buying a PS3 because of its lack of PS2 emulation then seriously you need to reassess whether you want one at all. You are buying a PS3 to play PS3 games, not PS2 games. The reason PS2 emulation was dropped to begin with was because the emotion chip cost money which in turn made the PS3 more expensive to manufacture. PAL PS2 emulation did exist in software form but even then it was never 100%. I have a PS3 with the software emulation and games such as GT4 didn't even work 100% (frame rates were choppy). Sony even had a website up detailing which games worked/didn't work/kinda worked which shows that it was never 100% to begin with. Add to the fact that the PS3 has never had a memory card port to begin and it means even if you did have PS2 emu, you couldn't use your old saves on the PS3 anyway (frustrating for GT fans who'd gained all their licences and unlocked all the rare cars.). So really, if you want to play PS2 games, stick to the PS2 and use the PS3 for what its primarily designed for - to play PS3 games.

I'm wondering if i sell my original 60gb PS3 to cover the cost of the new one. i'm a sucker for a 40% power saving even if i lose ps2 compat and mediacards. Not a huge fan of the aesthetics in comparison but at least it'll be cheaper and quieter to run

There's no way I would part with my original 60gb. If your original 60gb's condition is good then I'm sure there'll be some interest.

Yeah just dont play ps2 games anymore and i have a ps2 anyway.
its still in great condition, im a nerd so naturally i take good care of my tech

It's still very expensive per disc (about $80-$90) but some would argue...well worth it.

WHY use blu-ray when we got great sites.

Did some more research as opposed to speculating and it seems the PSU is still built into the unit... still dunno how they managed to get the thing to lose 2kgs though...

Well as an early adopter, I got one of the original PS3 (albeit an original 20gb one, since upgraded) and it came with the full PS2 "Emotion Engine" chipset (ie the PS2 processor as opposed to software emulation seen on the Oz release verson) for backwards compatibility (although I've never used it since it's region locked to Asian region PS2 games - lol)

I will take it if you want a slim Most of My Ps2 games are Japanese..

Hmm, if I had to pay to get the classic games on PS3... i wouldn't be totally against that. As long as it's not too much, and that the graphics are upgraded in some way or some other bonuses are provided. For instance I'm already planing to get the next gen version of Marvel vs Capcom 2 and the SFII HD remix version. If they could provide those missing PC-only levels from the earlier Tomb Raider games I'd be happy too.

They have Final Fanatsy VII up for 15.95 on the PSN store. And some PSP titles for about $29.95. It would annoy me to buy a game I already have.

Thas true, but I have a heap of PS2 games that I like to play, problem is, I have under my telly:
1 x Dreamcast
1 x Sega Saturn
1 x Wii
1 x Ps2 (for now)
1 x Borrowed from a mate Ps3 (actually this is Next to my telly).

Luckily my telly has a heap of inputs of various descriptions, allwing me to cable them all up without too much hassle.
I play all of them regularly, if I could play Ps2 on a PS3, I would so buy it, just so I could clear some space!! I realise that they don't (and won't) have BC, but it would be so nice and I would attain some respect for Sony if they did, just to show they care about the customer.

That wouldn't annoy me that much... since I could sell Final Fantasy VII on ebay for $50 .

The XBox Xbox Elite is getting a price drop too (but not the Pro or Arcade versions)
