The square hole is fairly redundant so it was removed in later versions of the toy. Earlier versions had the hole.

Maybe it was a leftover from "Diakron!"?

Yeah, you can. The square hole was originally intended to help secure the chest plate but in reality it never worked properly anyway, so they got rid of it in subsequent releases.

The first year of carded BW toys had rocky and smooth bubble packaging variants, but as K-9 is a later wave figure I don't think he had those packaging variants.

    MOSC K-9

The main variation that occurs with K-9 is in the nose paint application. There's one version which has just the nose and front of the muzzle spray-painted black (below left) whereas the other one has the entire muzzle spray-painted black (below right).

I always wondered what that thing was for. The chestpiece (or at least the one I had) didn't have anything which ended up even close to the hole. I did experiment with plugging the green Dev waist/abs piece in there in attack mode, as an alternative to attaching it to the hip-piece/missile rack.

Yes. Swerve has a silver face with blue eyes, Outback has blue eyes also, along with a stamped Autobot logo on his right arm.

    Secret Transformers Autobot Rescue Squad.

The idea was that by joining this club, you became an ally of the Autobots. If you spot Decepticon activity you were supposed to contact the Autobots to alert them! I seriously used to pretend to do this - I actually had a rotary-dial telephone on my desk and pretended to call the Autobots with it. It wasn't actually plugged in or anything - wasn't a working phone, but I would play make believe. Later when I had a dial-up modem and computer in my room (back in the pre-internet days of dial-up BBSes) I got a telephone extension cord so that the phone could actually work.
