never even heard of it - is the detective more reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes or Inspector Gadget? Either is fine with me as long as it's not some boring in between (though Sherlock with a helicopter that comes out of his hat does have a certain appeal )

To answer that may give too much away. The best advice I can give you is to sit down and watch it. You won't regret it and definitely won't be bored.

I quite like Psycho-Pass. A 2012 anime in a world where brain scans can instantly determine your 'psycho-pass', a report on personality, mental state and criminal tendencies. If your crime coefficient rises too high, you are hunted down and arrested, sometimes with lethal force. This is old school sci- fi. Asking questions and poking holes in utopian/dystopian social systems.
