    Decades aren't the same as centuries. If the new decade didn't start until 2011 then 1980 wouldn't have been in the eighties and yet 1990 would.

    (And sure, there was no zero AD, but there was also never a 1AD, a 2AD, a 3AD all the way up to 524AD, since Dionysius Exiguus didn't even make up the AD dating system until 525AD. A year he made up himself! Using something so arbitrary to decide that 1980 was in the seventies is an anomalous logistical leap.)

    I was discussing this with Zed recently. It seems that the year when a decade or millenium starts is mostly decided by popular oppinion than actual year counting.

    You gotta love that wacky Roman calendar of ours.
