    Default International Space Station

The ISS was visible over Australia for a couple of minutes after 17:31 today. Those of us in Sydney had the best view.

I ran out of my place and tried to snap some blurry photos with my phone, but I was surprised at how quickly it moved across the sky. Only managed to snap two quick pics.

Obviously just the pics on the left and centre are mine, the others are photos of the ISS which I pinched off Google.

Did anyone else see it or take (hopefully better) pics? If so, feel free to share.

I had no idea it was passing overhead, unfortunately I'm still at work so had little hope of seeing it anyway.

Heavens Above is great for finding out the best times to see the ISS.

When I was a teenager my friend had a house on a lake outside Ulladulla that we used to stay at all the time. Because there was so little light pollution, we would count sometimes in the hundreds of objects visible in low orbit each night. A few times we even saw the space shuttle. Speed ranged from slow (hard to tell if moving or not) to astonishingly quick (space shuttle).

    Good times.

I've been lucky to see the ISS hammering across the sky, it's amazing, it looks so low compared to most satellites plus way bigger.

Oh wow Gok. You managed to capture the ISS antenna at the bottom of the left pic. It shows up very clear. Great camera work.

Celestially related... I've been seeing what I believe is Venus in the western sky in recent nights, about an hour or so after the sun goes down. It was so bright when I first saw it I thought it was a plane or comet, because the "white noise" of city lighting in my area means I don't usually see stars in the night sky without really concentrating and squinting. Since it wasn't moving, I knew it wasn't a plane... and it was way too big to be a star, so figured it had to be something planetary, and from what I can tell, Venus is currently visible to us during July.
(if only I had a telescope to get a good look at it while it is so close to us)

In Sydney we can see Venus and Jupiter pretty close to each other in the night sky. I driving home from returning some rental DVDs earlier this evening and I slowed down to admire the two planets.
