I tried reinstalling from the disk. Monitor's less than a year old.

If you haven't already done so, find out the name of the video card manufacturer and the name and type of your video card (for example, I run a Nvidia Geforce 9600GT) you have and then go to the relevant webiste and download the latest drivers for your card.

Basic computer maintenance dictates that one should always do the following:

1. De-fragment your Harddrive/s regularly.
2. Ensure that the latest drivers for all internal and peripheral devices are installed regularly.
3. Ensure that a current Anti-Malware program is installed and regularly updated and that it's subscription is renewed at the end of it's life.

This will ensure that your computer has the best it can have to work with and that as many basic functional issues are mitigated.

Gok, what's the brand (don't think it's important) and the model of the LCD you have there? Is it a non-wide screen?

It's an Acer wide screen.

OK, bit hard to guess as Acer has a few 24" LCD in their production line http://www.acer.com.au/acer/product....CRC=2759084358

The only sensible solution is to install the monitor file, which you can get from the Acer support webpage http://www.acer.com.au/acer/service....CRC=3460338440

Also just make sure your graphics card is registering after you click on "advance settings" ->

Basically i'd like something I can load a couple of programs onto and then copy files onto so I can sit in bed and have a read.

It doesn't need to be able to access the internet, I just want a plain and simple reader I can copy files to.

The green means you're on a site with a secure connection, the red i assume means you're on a site with what has been identified as a non-secure connection?\. Maybe someone else can confirm this too
