It is simply a nod to the fans.

It's not the first time that fan terms have entered official currency. The term "Generation 1" was originally a fan term. I remember the day G2 first aired... watched it in the morning, then went to school, and everyone was saying, "Did you notice how it was pretty much the same as Generation 1?" -- so the fan term was pretty instant. But "Generation 1" wasn't officially used until 2000.

personally, i'd open them and junk the packaging.

The amount of packaging that i have just straight out junked in the past year would be shocking to some - only G1 packaging is safe....

I always open. I keep my Takara packaging. Hasbro packaging has to be old like Beast Wars or special like ACG-Con Metroplex for me to keep it..

For those smaller sets of figures, I think they look nice displayed sealed... but if space is a factor...

If you're not going to regret doing so later, then open them. Personally, i'd keep them sealed.

I'd open them. Machine Wars were terrible shelfwarmers here anyway...

Forget a knife, I just take scissors to the tape. I'd vote open.

do you want to see how they transform? would you consider selling them later. Resale value on a sealed complete set of figures would have to be pretty good.

If you want to transform them, see how they work, then crack them open. if you have been planning on opening them while you collected them all MISB then I'd set aside an afternoon or at least an evening and soak it up and enjoy it. take lots of photos and let them out of their cages.

I collected a lot of the Animated series after the fact and I still have most of them MISB. one of these days i'm going to sit down and crack them all open. it's a case for me of having display space at the time since I only have the one cabinet.
