BUT, I'm not so sure about giving up seats to women - which from a reading of the posts above would mean all healthy, able bodied women who do not fall into the class of people in the paragraph above.

While on the one hand it may be chivalrous to do so, on the other hand it could look like an insult from the woman's perspective. It is very possible that in this day and age where women in the Western world see themselves as equals to men, the woman may be asking herself the question - "why would this guy give up his seat for me? Does he think that I am the weaker sex? Does he think that I have some disability? Does he think I cannot take care of myself? Does he think that I need the seat because I am a woman". Possibly, she may just find it insulting.

If however, the women that we give up our seats for are friends of yours (or your gf/partner/wife) who you are out with you as a group, then it'd likely be looked upon kindly and be considered chivalrous.

    Just my 2 cents.
I totally agree with this. In today's PC world there is a very good chance that giving your seat to a standing healthy woman would be seen as you disrespecting or even insulting her as 'the weaker sex'; or worse as an unwanted sexual advance as it wouldn't surprise me if it was seen as a form of harassment.

In my opinion a lot of good manners and chivalrous behavior can now be seen as sexist. Unfortunately just as with many things in today's western society, feminism has gone a bit extremist and it is indeed possible that by doing an act of kindness like giving your seat to a woman, could end up creating a scene if she takes it the wrong way.

whilst on the train a fairly packed train on the way home from work. a youngish woman tapped me on the shoulder and said "so are you going to offer your seat up" i promptley said no, i have just had knee surgery and i think i need this seat more then you.

well it was 2 weeks after the op but i still could not stand on the train. and whilst it may be seen as sexist to offer up your seat to some women.. other women expect it..

she turned a nice shade of red... and i still cant stand on the train for fear a jolt will do some damage.

Fair enough if you have an injury... I was one of the first passengers on the bus we were on yesterday and I saw all these uni students get on the bus. None of them appeared injured. And there were several male students sitting down while those ladies were standing... it's unlikely that they all had injuries or some other good reason not to stand up and let the ladies have their seats. I believe in equality but I also believe in courtesy. The problem today is so many people just expect it.

You make quite a good point there dude because it certainly can backfire, in a sense, as I have had the 'Evils' given to me a number of times when holding a door open for some women.

I think that is completely fair and you would be constantly cautious with the world leading lines and service that our Rail networks have to offer, hopefully the woman was understanding though.

Our motto at Karate is "Respect all, fear none"

As far as the whole giving up your seat thing I will only give up my seat on public transport for the elderly, pregnant or injured. One thing I have noticed particularly with Gen X women is they want gender equity but only when it suits them. Equal rights for all but give up your seat for me on the train?!?

I got given a dirty look for holding open a door for a woman at the gym as I was leaving this class. Thing is though, I wasn't doing coz she was a chick, I did it coz otherwise it would've smacked her in the face. If it was a bloke behind me, I would've held the door open.

Funny old world really. No wonder I take very little seriously, I have noticed a tendency to laugh my way through many things.
